Abstract Electrospinning using natural proteins or synthetic polymers is a promising technique for the fabrication of fibrous scaffolds for various tissue engineering applications. However, one ...limitation of scaffolds electrospun from natural proteins is the need to cross-link with glutaraldehyde for stability, which has been postulated to lead to many complications in vivo including graft failure. In this study, we determined the characteristics of hybrid scaffolds composed of natural proteins including collagen and elastin, as well as gelatin, and the synthetic polymer poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL), so to avoid chemical cross-linking. Fiber size increased proportionally with increasing protein and polymer concentrations, whereas pore size decreased. Electrospun gelatin/PCL scaffolds showed a higher tensile strength when compared to collagen/elastin/PCL constructs. To determine the effects of pore size on cell attachment and migration, both hybrid scaffolds were seeded with adipose-derived stem cells. Scanning electron microscopy and nuclei staining of cell-seeded scaffolds demonstrated the complete cell attachment to the surfaces of both hybrid scaffolds, although cell migration into the scaffold was predominantly seen in the gelatin/PCL hybrid. The combination of natural proteins and synthetic polymers to create electrospun fibrous structures resulted in scaffolds with favorable mechanical and biological properties.
A search for neutrinoless double-β decay (0νββ) in Xe136 is performed with the full EXO-200 dataset using a deep neural network to discriminate between 0νββ and background events. Relative to ...previous analyses, the signal detection efficiency has been raised from 80.8% to 96.4±3.0%, and the energy resolution of the detector at the Q value of Xe136 0νββ has been improved from σ/E=1.23% to 1.15±0.02% with the upgraded detector. Accounting for the new data, the median 90% confidence level 0νββ half-life sensitivity for this analysis is 5.0×1025 yr with a total Xe136 exposure of 234.1 kg yr. No statistically significant evidence for 0νββ is observed, leading to a lower limit on the 0νββ half-life of 3.5×1025 yr at the 90% confidence level.

promoter is autoregulated, displaying low activity in a wildtype (wt) host background and high activity in the

promoter includes a conserved inverted repeat directly upstream of the predicted −35 subsequence. A mutational analysis demonstrated that the site is required for the high promoter activity in the
srlA
deletion background. Electromobility shift assays using purified wildtype CenR response regulator and a D55E phosphomimetic derivative suggest this protein acts as a likely Class II activator by binding promoter DNA. These results document the first identified CenK–CenR regulon member in

The paper describes the development of predictive equations of windthrow for five tree species based on remote sensing of wind-affected stands in southwestern New Brunswick (NB). The data ...characterises forest conditions before, during and after the passing of extratropical cyclone Arthur, July 4–5, 2014. The five-variable logistic function developed for balsam fir (bF) was validated against remote-sensing-acquired windthrow data for bF-stands affected by the Christmas Mountains windthrow event of November 7, 1994. In general, the prediction of windthrow in the area agreed fairly well with the windthrow sites identified by photogrammetry. The occurrence of windthrow in the Christmas Mountains was prominent in areas with shallow soils and prone to localised accelerations in mean and turbulent airflow. The windthrow function for bF was subsequently used to examine the future impact of windthrow under two climate scenarios (RCP’s 4.5 and 8.5) and species response to local changes anticipated with global climate change, particularly with respect to growing degree-days and soil moisture. Under climate change, future windthrow in bF stands (2006–2100) is projected to be modified as the species withdraws from the high-elevation areas and NB as a whole, as the climate progressively warms and precipitation increases, causing the growing environment of bF to deteriorate.
Double-β-decay involves the simultaneous conversion of two neutrons into two protons, and the emission of two electrons and two neutrinos; the neutrinoless process, although not yet observed, is ...thought to involve the emission of the two electrons but no neutrinos. The search for neutrinoless-double-β-decay probes fundamental properties of neutrinos, including whether or not the neutrino and antineutrino are distinct particles. Double-β-decay detectors are large and expensive, so it is essential to achieve the highest possible sensitivity with each study, and removing spurious contributions ('background') from detected signals is crucial. In the nEXO neutrinoless-double-β-decay experiment, the identification, or 'tagging', of the
Ba daughter atom resulting from the double-β decay of
Xe provides a technique for discriminating background. The tagging scheme studied here uses a cryogenic probe to trap the barium atom in a solid xenon matrix, where the barium atom is tagged through fluorescence imaging. Here we demonstrate the imaging and counting of individual barium atoms in solid xenon by scanning a focused laser across a solid xenon matrix deposited on a sapphire window. When the laser irradiates an individual atom, the fluorescence persists for about 30 seconds before dropping abruptly to the background level-a clear confirmation of one-atom imaging. Following evaporation of a barium deposit, the residual barium fluorescence is 0.16 per cent or less. Our technique achieves the imaging of single atoms in a solid noble element, establishing the basic principle of barium tagging for nEXO.
Future ton-scale liquefied noble gas detectors depend on efficient light detection in the vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) range. In the past years, silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) have emerged as a valid ...alternative to standard photomultiplier tubes or large-area avalanche photodiodes. The next-generation double-beta decay experiment, nEXO, with a 5-ton liquid xenon time projection chamber will use SiPMs for detecting the 175-nm xenon scintillation light, in order to achieve an energy resolution of <inline-formula> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">\boldsymbol {\sigma }/\boldsymbol {Q_{\beta \beta }} = 1 </tex-math></inline-formula>%. This paper presents recent measurements of the VUV-HD generation SiPMs from Fondazione Bruno Kessler, Trento, Italy, in two complementary setups. It includes measurements of the photon-detection efficiency (PDE) with gaseous xenon scintillation light in a vacuum setup and dark measurements in a dry nitrogen gas setup. We report improved PDE at 175 nm compared to previous generation devices that would meet the criteria of nEXO. Furthermore, we present the projected nEXO detector light collection and energy resolution that could be achieved by using these SiPMs.
The Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (SNO) used an array of 3He proportional counters to measure the rate of neutral-current interactions in heavy water and precisely determined the total active (nu_x) ...8B solar neutrino flux. This technique is independent of previous methods employed by SNO. The total flux is found to be 5.54_-0.31;+0.33(stat)-0.34+0.36(syst)x10(6) cm(-2) s(-1), in agreement with previous measurements and standard solar models. A global analysis of solar and reactor neutrino results yields Deltam2=7.59_-0.21;+0.19x10(-5) eV2 and theta=34.4_-1.2;+1.3 degrees. The uncertainty on the mixing angle has been reduced from SNO's previous results.
Characterization of the vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) reflectance of silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) is important for large-scale SiPM-based photodetector systems. We report the angular dependence of the ...specular reflectance in vacuum of SiPMs manufactured by Fondazionc Bruno Kessler (FBK) and Hamamatsu Photonics K.K. (HPK) over wavelengths ranging from 120 to 280 nm. Refractive index and extinction coefficient of the thin silicon-dioxide film deposited on the surface of the FBK SiPMs are derived from reflectance data of an FBK silicon wafer with the same deposited oxide film as SiPMs. The diffuse reflectance of SiPMs is also measured at 193 nm. We use the VUV spectral dependence of the optical constants to predict the reflectance of the FBK silicon wafer and FBK SiPMs in liquid xenon.
EXO-200 is an experiment designed to search for double beta decay of super(136)Xe with a single-phase, liquid xenon detector. It uses an active mass of 110 kg of xenon enriched to 80.6% in the ...isotope 136 in an ultra-low background time projection chamber capable of simultaneous detection of ionization and scintillation. This paper describes the EXO-200 detector with particular attention to the most innovative aspects of the design that revolve around the reduction of backgrounds, the efficient use of the expensive isotopically enriched xenon, and the optimization of the energy resolution in a relatively large volume.
