A haloscope of the QUAX– a γ experiment composed of an oxygen-free high thermal conductivity-Cu cavity inside an 8.1 T magnet and cooled to ∼ 200 mK is put in operation for the search of galactic ...axion with mass ma ≃ 43 μ eV . The power emitted by the resonant cavity is amplified with a Josephson parametric amplifier whose noise fluctuations are at the standard quantum limit. With the data collected in about 1 h at the cavity frequency νc = 10.40176 GHz , the experiment reaches the sensitivity necessary for the detection of galactic QCD-axion, setting the 90% confidence level limit to the axion-photon coupling gaγγ < 0.766 × 10−13 GeV−1.
The search for a novel technology, which is able to detect and reconstruct nuclear recoil events in the keV energy range, has become increasingly important now that vast regions of high mass ...weakly-interacting-massive-particle-like dark matter candidates have been excluded. Gaseous time projection chambers (TPC) with optical readout are very promising candidates combining the complete event information provided by the TPC technique with the high sensitivity and granularity of the latest generation light sensors. A TPC with an amplification at the anode, obtained with gas electron multipliers (GEMs), was tested at the Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati. Photons and neutrons from radioactive sources were employed to induce recoiling nuclei and electrons with kinetic energy in the range 1-100 keV. A He-CF4 (60/40) gas mixture was used at atmospheric pressure and the light produced during the multiplication in the GEM channels was acquired by a high-position resolution and low-noise complementary metal-oxide semiconductor camera and a photomultiplier. A multi-stage pattern recognition algorithm based on an advanced clustering technique is presented here. A number of cluster-shaped observables are used to identify nuclear recoils induced by neutrons, which originated from a AmBe source against x-ray 55Fe photoelectrons. An efficiency of 18% to detect nuclear recoils with an energy of about 6 keV is reached, while suppressing 96% of the 55Fe photoelectrons, making this optical read-out gas TPC a very promising candidate for future investigations of ultra-rare events such as directional direct dark matter searches.

A method for the separation of a mixture of terbutaline and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs was developed using capillary electrophoresis with a new hemispherodextrin, ad hoc designed, the lysine − bridged hemispherodextrin (THLYSH). The use of lysine residues to bridge the trehalose capping unit moiety to the cyclodextrin cavity gives rise to a receptor with two long chains with amine nitrogen atoms, whose charge can be easily tuned as a function of the solution pH. The new hemispherodextrin was accurately characterised by ESI–MS and NMR spectroscopy, also highlighting its protonation behaviour. Circular dichroism and ESR spectroscopy measurements were also carried out to test its inclusion ability towards anthraquinone-3-sulfonate and its metal coordination ability towards copper(II) ion, respectively. Analogously to the other hemispherodextrins, the main skill of this new derivative lies in its chiral selector properties, as shown by the separation of the enantiomeric pairs of terbutaline and ibuprofen, flurbiprofen, suprofen and tiaprofenic acid by capillary electrophoresis. The focused use of the solution equilibria involved in the separations made it possible to understand the phenomena occurring in solution, and to finely tune the charge status of the receptor. In this way the chiral separation of the racemic mixture was successfully obtained, even if the receptor was individually used, differently by the other hemispherodextrins previously studied whose chiral separation capabilities are present only if used as binary mixtures.
The stability of silver nanoplatelet (NP) suspensions prepared with different concentrations of trisodium citrate (TSC) was studied by depolarized dynamic light scattering (DDLS) and UV-vis ...spectrometry. The morphology of the nanoparticles, as well as the color and stability of the sols, are tuned by the concentration of the capping agent. The nanoparticles prepared with high TSC concentration (>10−4 M) are blue triangular NPs showing a slight truncation of the tips with aging. When low TSC concentrations are used, the color of the sols changes from blue to yellow with aging time and a strong modification of the morphology occurs: the nanoparticle shape changes from triangular to spherical. Remarkably, they show a high degree of anisotropy. The aging process was followed by the UV-vis spectra and by measuring the rotational diffusion coefficient by DDLS, providing information on the nanoparticle size and shape evolution. The high intensity of depolarized signal and the high value of rotational diffusion coefficient suggest that the aging process increases the thickness and the roughness of the nanoparticles
Psychotropic medications target glycogen synthase kinase 3β (GSK3β), but the functional integration with other factors relevant for drug efficacy is poorly understood. We discovered that the ...suggested psychiatric risk factor FK506 binding protein 51 (FKBP51) increases phosphorylation of GSK3β at serine 9 (pGSK3β(S9)). FKBP51 associates with GSK3β mainly through its FK1 domain; furthermore, it also changes GSK3β's heterocomplex assembly by associating with the phosphatase PP2A and the kinase cyclin-dependent kinase 5. FKBP51 acts through GSK3β on the downstream targets Tau, β-catenin and T-cell factor/lymphoid enhancing factor (TCF/LEF). Lithium and the antidepressant (AD) paroxetine (PAR) functionally synergize with FKBP51, as revealed by reporter gene and protein association analyses. Deletion of FKBP51 blunted the PAR- or lithium-induced increase in pGSK3β(S9) in cells and mice and attenuated the behavioral effects of lithium treatment. Clinical improvement in depressive patients was predicted by baseline GSK3β pathway activity and by pGSK3β(S9) reactivity to ex vivo treatment of peripheral blood mononuclear lymphocytes with lithium or PAR. In sum, FKBP51-directed GSK3β activity contributes to the action of psychotropic medications. Components of the FKBP51-GSK3β pathway may be useful as biomarkers predicting AD response and as targets for the development of novel ADs.
The Italian institute for nuclear physics (INFN) has financed the SIMP project (2019–2021) in order to strengthen its skills and technologies in the field of meV detectors with the ultimate aim of ...developing a single microwave photon detector. This goal will be pursued by improving the sensitivity and the dark-count rate of two types of photodetectors: current-biased Josephson junction (CBJJ) for the frequency range 10–50 GHz and transition-edge sensor (TES) for the frequency range 30–100 GHz. Preliminary results on materials and devices characterization are presented.
Reducing noise to the quantum limit over a large bandwidth is a fundamental requirement for future applications operating at millikelvin temperatures, such as the neutrino mass measurement, the ...next-generation X-ray observatory, the CMB measurement, the dark matter and axion detection, and the rapid high-fidelity readout of superconducting qubits. The read out sensitivity of arrays of microcalorimeter detectors, resonant axion-detectors, and qubits, is currently limited by the noise temperature and bandwidth of the cryogenic amplifiers. The Detector Array Readout with Traveling Wave Amplifiers project has the goal of developing high-performing innovative traveling wave parametric amplifiers with a high gain, a high saturation power, and a quantum-limited or nearly quantum-limited noise. The practical development follows two different promising approaches, one based on the Josephson junctions and the other one based on the kinetic inductance of a high-resistivity superconductor. In this contribution, we present the aims of the project, the adopted design solutions and preliminary results from simulations and measurements.
A growing interest in the detection of single microwave-photons has been stimulated by the search for light dark matter, such as Axions and Axion-like particles, together with the fast development of ...quantum technologies based on superconducting devices. Many solutions have been proposed in literature but most of them still fail to satisfy the tight requirements imposed by Dark Matter experiments. For instance, many have a large dark-count rate that still make parametric amplifiers a preferable choice. On the contrary, a device based on a current biased Josephson junction resonantly activated by the absorption of a microwave photon may have dark-counts rate down to the mHz level. Here, we report the experimental study of the resonant activation of an Al Josephson junction excited by continuous radiofrequency. The device under study consists of a chip with a transmission line terminated by an Al Josephson-junction, fabricated by shadow-mask evaporation technique. The sample-holder with the chip inside is hosted in a superconducting box and it is thermally anchored to the mixing-chamber plate of a dilution refrigerator at a temperature of about 15 mK. We measured the escape rates of the junction in different configurations of current bias and radiofrequency excitations. Response to continuous wave has been measured and interpreted within the RCSJ model. These results are used to optimize the design of a single microwave-photon detector.
Ultralow-noise microwave amplification and detection play a central role in different applications, going from fundamental physics experiments to the deployment of quantum technologies. In many ...applications the necessity of reading multiple detectors, or cavities or qubits, calls for large bandwidth amplifiers with the lowest possible noise. Current technologies are based on High Electron Mobility Transistors and Josephson Parametric Amplifiers. Both have limitations, the former in terms of the minimum noise, the latter in terms of bandwidth. Superconducting Traveling Wave Parametric Amplifiers (TWPAs) have the potential of offering quantum limited noise and large bandwidth. These amplifiers are based on the parametric amplification of microwaves traveling along a transmission line with embedded nonlinear elements. We are developing superconducting TWPAs based both on Josephson junction arrays (Traveling Wave Josephson Parametric Amplifiers) and on nonlinear kinetic inductance (Dispersion Engineered Traveling Wave Kinetic Inductance Amplifiers). Our goal is to achieve large bandwidth (in the 5 to 10 GHz range), large gain (more than 20 dB), large saturation power (more than −50 dBm), and near quantum limited noise (noise temperature less than 600 mK). Current achievements in the design and development of the high performance TWPAs are here reported and discussed, together with current limitations and possible future developments.
This study presents recent advancements in Josephson Traveling Wave Parametric Amplifiers (JTWPAs) developed and tested at Istituto Nazionale di Ricerca Metrologica within the Detector Array Readout ...with Traveling Wave AmplifieRS project framework. Combining Josephson junctions with superconducting coplanar waveguides, JTWPAs offer advanced capabilities for quantum-limited broadband microwave amplification and the emission of non-classical microwave radiation. The work delves into the architecture, optimization, and experimental characterization of a JTWPA with a Resonant Phase-Matching mechanism, highlighting signal gains and idler conversion factors in relation to pump power and signal frequency.
