ABSTRACT
We present the results of photometric and spectroscopic monitoring campaigns of the changing look AGN NGC 3516 carried out in 2018 to 2020 covering the wavelength range from the X-ray to the ...optical. The facilities included the telescopes of the CMO SAI MSU, the 2.3-m WIRO telescope, and the XRT and UVOT of Swift. We found that NGC 3516 brightened to a high state and could be classified as Sy1.5 during the late spring of 2020. We have measured time delays in the responses of the Balmer and He ii λ4686 lines to continuum variations. In the case of the best-characterized broad H β line, the delay to continuum variability is about 17 d in the blue wing and is clearly shorter, 9 d, in the red, which is suggestive of inflow. As the broad lines strengthened, the blue side came to dominate the Balmer lines, resulting in very asymmetric profiles with blueshifted peaks during this high state. During the outburst the X-ray flux reached its maximum on 2020 April 1 and it was the highest value ever observed for NGC 3516 by the Swift observatory. The X-ray hard photon index became softer, ∼1.8 in the maximum on 2020 April 21 compared to the mean ∼0.7 during earlier epochs before 2020. We have found that the UV and optical variations correlated well (with a small time delay of 1–2 d) with the X-ray until the beginning of 2020 April, but later, until the end of 2020 June, these variations were not correlated. We suggest that this fact may be a consequence of partial obscuration by Compton-thick clouds crossing the line of sight.

The facilities included the telescopes of the SAI MSU, MASTER Global Robotic Net, the 2.3-m WIRO telescope, Swift, and others. We found significant variability at all wavelengths and, specifically, in the intensities and profiles of the broad Balmer lines. We measured time delays of ∼6 d (∼8 d) in the responses of the Hβ (Hα) line to continuum variations. We found the X-ray variations to correlate well with the UV and optical (with a small time delay of a few days for longer wavelengths). The K-band lagged the B band by 14 ± 4 d during the last three seasons, which is significantly shorter than the delays reported previously by the 2016 and 2017–2019 campaigns. Near-IR variability arises from two different emission regions: the outer part of the accretion disc and a more distant dust component. The HK-band variability is governed primarily by dust. The Balmer decrement of the broad-line components is inversely correlated with the UV flux. The change of the object’s type from Sy1 to Sy1.8 was recorded over a period of ∼8 yr. We interpret these changes as a combination of two factors: changes in the accretion rate and dust recovery along the line of sight.

Purpose To assess the repeatability of a new swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT) biometer (IOLMaster 700) and evaluate the agreement with an optical low-coherence reflectometry (OLCR) ...biometer (Lenstar 900) in cataractous eyes. Setting Tertiary eyecare facility. Design Prospective evaluation of a diagnostic test. Methods Eyes of patients had 3 consecutive scans acquired by the same operator. The repeatability of measurements was assessed using the within-subject standard deviation and coefficient of variation (CoV). Agreement between the mean measurements of each machine was evaluated. Results The study comprised 100 eyes of 100 patients. The median lens thickness and axial length (AL) measurements were significantly greater ( P < .001) with SS-OCT (4.29 mm and 23.5 mm, respectively, versus 4.25 mm and 23.4 mm, respectively); anterior chamber depth (ACD) was greater with OLCR (2.72 mm versus 2.70 mm, respectively) ( P < .001). The within-subject standard deviation and CoV of the AL (0.01 and 0.05, respectively) and the ACD (0.04 and 1.22, respectively) measurements showed lower variability with SS-OCT (0.05 and 0.21, respectively, for AL; 0.06 and 1.99, respectively, for ACD) than with OLCR. Good agreement was seen for anterior segment measurements between the 2 devices. The 95% limits of agreement of most parameters fell within the test–retest variability of the parameters. The SS-OCT biometer also showed better penetration in dense posterior subcapsular cataracts, measuring AL successfully in 96% of cases. Conclusions The new SS-OCT biometer showed good repeatability and agreement with the OLCR biometer. The SS-OCT biometer measured the AL with fewer dropouts compared with the OLCR even in dense cataracts. Abstract
The most rapidly evolving regions of galaxies often display complex optical spectra with emission lines excited by massive stars, shocks and accretion on to supermassive black holes. ...Standard calibrations (such as for the star formation rate) cannot be applied to such mixed spectra. In this paper, we isolate the contributions of star formation, shock excitation and active galactic nucleus (AGN) activity to the emission line luminosities of individual spatially resolved regions across the central 3 × 3 kpc2 region of the active barred spiral galaxy NGC 613. The star formation rate and AGN luminosity calculated from the decomposed emission line maps are in close agreement with independent estimates from data at other wavelengths. The star formation component traces the B-band stellar continuum emission, and the AGN component forms an ionization cone which is aligned with the nuclear radio jet. The optical line emission associated with shock excitation is cospatial with strong H2 and Fe II emission and with regions of high ionized gas velocity dispersion (σ ≳ 100 km s−1). The shock component also traces the outer boundary of the AGN ionization cone and may therefore be produced by outflowing material interacting with the surrounding interstellar medium. Our decomposition method makes it possible to determine the properties of star formation, shock excitation and AGN activity from optical spectra, without contamination from other ionization mechanisms.
Abstract We report first-time reverberation-mapping results for 14 active galactic nuclei (AGNs) from the ongoing Monitoring AGNs with H β Asymmetry campaign (MAHA). These results utilize optical ...spectra obtained with the Long Slit Spectrograph on the Wyoming Infrared 2.3 m Telescope between 2017 November and 2023 May. MAHA combines long-duration monitoring with high cadence. We report results from multiple observing seasons for nine of the 14 objects. These results include H β time lags, supermassive black hole masses, and velocity-resolved time lags. The velocity-resolved lags allow us to investigate the kinematics of the broad-line region.
Radio core dominance measurements, an indicator of jet orientation, sometimes rely on core flux density measurements from large-area surveys like Faint Images of the Radio Sky at Twenty cm (FIRST) ...that have an angular resolution of only 5″. Such low-resolution surveys often fail to resolve cores from the extended emission, resulting in an erroneous measurement. We focus on investigating this resolution effect for a sample of 119 radio-loud quasars. We obtained continuum observations from NSF's Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) at 10 GHz in A configuration with a 0 2 resolution. Our measurements show that at FIRST spatial resolution, core flux measurements are indeed systematically high even after considering the core variability. For a handful of quasars, 10 GHz images reveal extended features, whereas the FIRST image shows a point source. We found that the resolution effect is more prominent for quasars with smaller angular sizes. We further computed two radio core dominance parameters R and R5100 for use in statistical orientation investigations with this sample. We also present the spectral energy distributions between 74 MHz and 1.4 GHz, which we used to measure the spectral index of the extended emission of these quasars. Our results empirically confirm that determination of radio core dominance requires high spatial resolution data. We highlight the practical issues associated with the choice of frequency and resolution in the measurement of core and extended flux densities.
ABSTRACT
We report the results of long-term reverberation mapping campaigns of the nearby active galactic nuclei (AGNs) NGC 4151, spanning from 1994 to 2022, based on archived observations of the ...FAST Spectrograph Publicly Archived Programs and our new observations with the 2.3 m telescope at the Wyoming Infrared Observatory. We reduce and calibrate all the spectra in a consistent way, and derive light curves of the broad H β line and 5100 Å continuum. Continuum light curves are also constructed using public archival photometric data to increase sampling cadences. We subtract the host galaxy contamination using Hubble Space Telescope imaging to correct fluxes of the calibrated light curves. Utilizing the long-term archival photometric data, we complete the absolute flux-calibration of the AGN continuum. We find that the H β time delays are correlated with the 5100 Å luminosities as $\tau _{\rm H\beta }\propto L_{5100}^{0.46\pm 0.16}$. This is remarkably consistent with Bentz et al. (2013)’s global size–luminosity relationship of AGNs. Moreover, the data sets for five of the seasons allow us to obtain the velocity-resolved delays of the H β line, showing diverse structures (outflows, inflows, and discs). Combining our results with previous independent measurements, we find the measured dynamics of the H β broad-line region (BLR) are possibly related to the long-term trend of the luminosity. There is also a possible additional ∼1.86 yr time lag between the variation in BLR radius and luminosity. These results suggest that dynamical changes in the BLR may be driven by the effects of radiation pressure.

The present study reports deals with experimental and numerical thermal analysis of solid - liquid (S-L) interface in order to characterize phase change material (PCM) used for energy storage of latent heat thermal energy system (LHTES). The two major aspects of the present work, both important in the field of LHTES, are to investigate the influence of the orientation of LHTES container and variable heat input. The experiments were carried out in a cylindrical chamber filled with paraffin wax. Camera recorded image of S-L interface is used to analyze the S-L interface position with respect to time during melting. Results will provide behavior of paraffin wax associated with the phase change process of PCM. Investigating the results leads to formulation of non-linear melting rate and a wavy structure with non-uniform profile of S-L interface boundary. The result shows evolution of convective motion being dominant and even responsible to generate this non- uniform shape of S-L interface.
