Achatina fulica or "giant African snail" is an exotic species, considered to be one of the world's hundred most invasive species, causing serious environmental damages. In the present study we ...report, for the first time, the occurrence of Aelurostrongylus abstrusus infecting A.fulica in the Amazon region. This nematode is described parasitizing mainly the pulmonary system of felines, which causes "aelurostrongilose", also known as feline cardio-pulmonary strongyloidosis. New morphometric data of third stage larvae are presented herein. The present study demonstrated that 40% of all the snails were infected by A. abstrusus. Achatina fulica specimens were collected from three different areas in Manaus namely: rural; east and west areas. The east area presents the highest prevalence of 80%. The large number of A.fulica found in inhabited areas increases the chances of emergent zoonoses, which highlights the need of further studies so as to better control this disease.
T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (T-ALL) predominantly in children > 5 years-old, which accounts for approximately 15% of pediatric ALL in age range. Recent studies demonstrated that an ...accumulation of chromosomal rearrangements and other genetic anomalies is necessary for T-ALL development. However causal factors and time latency for childhood T-ALL remains enigmatic. Unlike B-cell precursor ALL that involves genetic events prenatally or in early infancy, T-ALL early childhood have controversial results regarding prenatal origin. Therefore, we conducted a molecular screening in infants with T-ALL searching for the most common genetic markers associated with this malignancy. This series of cases was selected from the incident cases included in the Brazilian Collaborative Study for IAL. The diagnosis of T-ALL was made according to morphology and EGIL classification, followed by conventional karyotyping. Sixteen cases of T-ALL IL were analyzed either by PCR-RFLP (FLT3), RT-PCR (MLL, SIL/TAL1 and HOX11L2) or PCR-DHPLC (NOTCH1), tracing the genetic alterations commonly found in these genes. Mean age at diagnosis was 14.6 months (6–24), there was a predominance of high white blood cells (WBC) count, and a poor survival in this series of cases. Cytogenetic aberrations included del(12p) (#2), t(11;14) (#3), del(6)(q23) and del(7) (q32) (#11), and 49, XY,+6,+8,+19 (#15). Details of all molecular markers are presented in Table. Then molecular markers were identified in 8 out of 16 (50%) T-ALL cases. The observed markers included MLL rearrangements (n=2), FLT3-ITD (n=1), SIL/TAL1 (n=2), HOX11L2 (n=1), and NOTCH1 (n=4). SIL/TAL1 and NOTCH1 abnormalities were found concomitantly in one case (#7) in the diagnostic sample. By the fact that the onset of T-ALL arose in a short time latency from birth to diagnosis we suggested that T-ALL might originate prenatally in these cases.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the effects of 3 types of noninvasive respiratory support systems in the treatment of acute pulmonary edema: oxygen therapy (O2), continuous positive airway pressure, and ...bilevel positive pressure ventilation. METHODS: We studied prospectively 26 patients with acute pulmonary edema, who were randomized into 1 of 3 types of respiratory support groups. Age was 69±7 years. Ten patients were treated with oxygen, 9 with continuous positive airway pressure, and 7 with noninvasive bilevel positive pressure ventilation. All patients received medicamentous therapy according to the Advanced Cardiac Life Support protocol. Our primary aim was to assess the need for orotracheal intubation. We also assessed the following: heart and respiration rates, blood pressure, PaO2, PaCO2, and pH at begining, and at 10 and 60 minutes after starting the protocol. RESULTS: At 10 minutes, the patients in the bilevel positive pressure ventilation group had the highest PaO2 and the lowest respiration rates; the patients in the O2 group had the highest PaCO2 and the lowest pH (p<0.05). Four patients in the O2 group, 3 patients in the continuous positive pressure group, and none in the bilevel positive pressure ventilation group were intubated (p<0.05). CONCLUSION: Noninvasive bilevel positive pressure ventilation was effective in the treatment of acute cardiogenic pulmonary edema, accelerated the recovery of vital signs and blood gas data, and avoided intubation.

The authors present three hair transplantation cases in which the receptor incisions were made in a variety of ways: CO2 laser vaporization orifices, in addition to which a lateral cold incision was performed. This lateral incision makes it easier to introduce micrografts by allowing air to be released and improves the fixation of the grafts by giving some elasticity to the orifice. The patients were previously beta blocked to prevent the beta-adrenergic action of epinefrin.

Rice husk ash was used to produce sodium silicate with SiO2/Na2O=3. The investigation of NaOH concentration and temperature on the silica conversion showed that NaOH has positive influence. SiO2/Na2O ... 3 was produced with 0.8 mol/l of NaOH and 403/453 K. These solutions were used to produce silica sol with diameter of 5nm.
