“Landscape” and „context”, being two constitutive elements of culture, allow for its comprehension and experience. These terms evoke the possibility of redefining the scope, the function and the ...possible form of culture in the times when humanities undermine both “theory” and “culture”.According to the author, any prospective theory of culture needs to be preceded by denotation of both “metaphysics” and “ontology”, the terms applied interchangeably in postmodern humanities. Metaphysics in the theory of culture could be based on Aristotle’s “first philosophy” which examines “being as being”; analogically, culture as a being could be specified according to its substance (ousia).
In A Familiar Preface to the ‘autobiographical’ volume A Personal Record. Some Reminiscences, Joseph Conrad provides that, in this work, there is no ‘veil’ separating the reader from the author. ...Despite this declaration, Conrad’s ‘memories’ goes beyond autobiography and you can risk the thesis that all ‘autobiographical’ texts are rather telling – in the idiomatic way – not about a man but cultural contexts, which formed him. Conrad ’s paratexts (the famous preface to The Nigger of the ‘Narcissus’, mentioned A Familiar Preface and Author’s notes written by Conrad for subsequent volumes of his works in the period 1917-1920) make an even greater problem of interpretation. They contain not only the artistic statements, but also a surprising ‘autobiographical’ reference and ‘guidance’ of interpretation – that really explains very little and seem to talk about something else. It is difficult to treat Conrad’s paratexts as autobiographical texts (though they often pretend to be); in turn proposal of seeing in them ‘author function’ in the classic form, indicated by Michel Foucault, also appears to be incomplete, because these paratexts simultaneously create author and his cultural context and literary craftsmanship. It seems, therefore, that Conrad considered his paratexts (especially Author’s notes) as a separate literary genre, in accordance with the instructions of Kierkegaard.

During his last expedition and just before his death on the South Face of Lhotse, the world-renowned Polish high-altitude climber Jerzy Kukuczka wrote a brief diary that provokes some general ...questions concerning the inner motivation of a mountaineer, but also the nature of mountaineering literature, to which the diary belongs. The laconic style of the diary suggests, following Philippe Lejeune, an invisible galaxy of the untold and unknown context beyond the text. Instead of reducing the diary to a literary text, the article attempts to treat it as a kind of logical tool that creates a cultural model of the world. Applying the anthropological concept of the collective, it analyzes Kukuczka’s diary as a kind of ontological mediation between nature and culture. Following Bruno Latour, the diary can be seen as both an oligopticon and a panorama, combining the richness of a partial network of collectives created in the process of climbing with the general view of the setting as the substantial entity of the mountain.
This book is an attempt to define historically significant travel models. The variety of texts it contains allows for recreating continuity and change within the complex European discourse. The ...authors understand travel as a practice causing a transfer of our knowledge and a way to consolidate specific cultural patterns and define their broader contexts. Therefore, it has both symbolic and practical functions, because travel dynamizes history and perpetuates it, consolidates individual cultures from within and becomes a vehicle for mediating beyond their borders. Travel in the perspective outlined in this volume will enable us to see the movements, repetitions, and gaps between patterns, both those matrixing cultural practice and those related to the emergence of discursive orders focused around this practice.
Trying to classify the cultural patterns of behaviour, modern anthropology offers the distinction between “shame cultures” (which rely on external sanctions for good behaviour) and “guilt cultures” ...(which internalize the conviction of sin). Correspondingly, shame and guilt create specific ethos and therefore could be treated as factors indicating cultural meaning and function of the notion of honour in different cultural contexts. The article is an attempt to analyse the role of guilt and shame phenomena in the creation of Joseph Conrad’s Lord Jim.
