With the start of the new century, and especially during the last decade, many writers are starting to putt he focus on the body and its various problems derived from the current socioeconomic ...system. One of them is Marta Sanz, for whom, in her own words, writing consists of “naming the body” and, thanks to that, “conquering the territory”. His discourse is frontally opposed to the discourse of postmodernity and to the models of advanced capitalism, above all and more consciously in his latest novels. What this article aims to show is how and in what way the body and its repolitization constitute one of the central axes of this author’s writing.
Reseña del libro La verdadera patria: Infancia y adolescencia en el relato español contemporáneo (Madrid, Iberoamericana-Vervuert, 2019), de María Pilar Celma y Carmen Morán (Coords.)
Although in recent years many scholars talk about a period of « memory crisis », with the advent of the new century –and more noticeably since the last decade– there is a new stream in the field of ...Spanish literature in which personal and collective memories seem to be vindicated by the authors as a source of prestige. I am talking about the recent success of autobiographies and autobiographical novels that have been flooding publishing houses lately. In these texts, the reported memories of the authors, usually born in the 60s are not based on a postmemory exercise, but, into their experiences and their own souvenirs, projecting them into the collective memory of the country.
Main cause of severe illness and death in COVID-19 patients appears to be an excessive but ineffectual inflammatory immune response that may cause severe acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). ...Vitamin D may favour an anti-inflammatory environment and improve cytotoxic response against some infectious diseases. A multicenter, single-blind, prospective, randomized clinical trial was approved in patients with COVID-19 pneumonia and levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) of 14.8 ng/ml (SD: 6.18) to test antiviral efficacy, tolerance and safety of 10,000 IU/day of cholecalciferol (vitamin D3) for 14 days, in comparison with 2000 IU/day. After supplementation, mean serum 25(OH)D levels increased to 19 ng/ml on average in 2000 IU/day versus 29 ng/ml in 10,000 IU/day group (p < 0.0001). Although levels of inflammatory cytokines were not modified by treatment with 10,000 IU/day, there was an increase of anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10 and higher levels of CD4+ T cells, with predominance of T central memory subpopulation. Cytotoxic response against pseudotyped SARS-CoV-2 infected cells was increased more than 4-fold in patients who received 10,000 IU/day. Moreover, levels of IFNγ were significantly higher in this group. Beneficial effect of supplementation with 10,000 IU/day was also observed in participants who developed ARDS and stayed at the hospital for 8.0 days, whereas those who received 2000 IU/day stayed for 29.2 days (p = 0.0381). Administration of high doses of vitamin D3 as adjuvant of the standard care treatment during hospitalization for COVID-19 may improve the inflammatory environment and cytotoxic response against pseudotyped SARS-CoV-2 infected cells, shortening the hospital stay and, possibly, improving the prognosis.

•Treatment with 10,000 IU/day of cholecalciferol was safe during severe COVID-19.•Anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10 was significantly increased in 10,000 IU/day group.•Individuals who received 10,000 IU/day of cholecalciferol showed increased CD4 count.•Individuals with ARDS in 10,000 IU/day group stayed at the hospital less time.•The 10,000 IU/day group showed increased antiviral cytotoxic activity.
To assess the efficacy and safety of the application, during stoma hygiene, of a pH-neutral gel containing organic EVOO (oEVOO) for the maintenance of peristomal skin integrity.
Patients with a ...colostomy or ileostomy were enrolled in a pilot randomized controlled trial and assigned treatment with a pH-neutral gel made from natural products including oEVOO or usual stoma hygiene gel. The primary outcome was three domains of abnormal peristomal skin: Discolouration, Erosion and Tissue overgrowth. Secondary outcomes that were evaluated included skin moisture; oiliness; skin elasticity; water-oil balance; patients’ perceptions; difficulty inserting and removing the pouching system; pain, any other chemical, infectious, mechanical, or immunological complications of concern. The intervention lasted 8 weeks.
Twenty-one patients were recruited for the trial and randomly assigned to either the experimental group (n = 12) or the control group (n = 9). The groups did not differ significantly in terms of patient characteristics. No significant differences between groups were identified either at baseline (p = 0.203) or at the end of the intervention (p = 0.397). In the experimental group, domains of abnormal peristomal skin improved after the intervention. The difference observed before and after the intervention was statistically significant (p = 0.031).
The use of a gel containing oEVOO has shown similar levels of efficacy and safety to other gels commonly used for peristomal skin hygiene. It is also relevant to highlight that a significant improvement in skin condition was observed in the experimental group before and after the intervention.
•The risk of impaired peristomal skin integrity is one of the most common concerns for individuals with a colostomy or ileostomy.•Peristomal skin may be extremely or substantially compromised and impacting the quality of life of individuals and higher healthcare costs.•There is some evidence of the efficacy of extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) products for skin, but the use of these products for peristomal skin care has been inadequately studied.•The gel containing organic EVOO has shown similar efficacy and safety to other gels used for peristomal skin hygiene, highlighted a improvement in skin condition in the experimental group.
