We study the multiphase feedback processes in the central ∼3 kpc of the barred Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 5643. We used observations of the cold molecular gas (ALMA CO(2−1) transition) and ionized gas ...(MUSE IFU optical emission lines). We studied different regions along the outflow zone, which extends out to ∼2.3 kpc in the same direction (east-west) as the radio jet, as well as nuclear and circumnuclear regions in the host galaxy disk. The CO(2−1) line profiles of regions in the outflow and spiral arms show two or more different velocity components: one associated with the host galaxy rotation, and the others with out- or inflowing material. In the outflow region, the O
III
λ
5007 Å emission lines have two or more components: the narrow component traces rotation of the gas in the disk, and the others are related to the ionized outflow. The deprojected outflowing velocities of the cold molecular gas (median
V
central
∼ 189 km s
−1
) are generally lower than those of the outflowing ionized gas, which reach deprojected velocities of up to 750 km s
−1
close to the active galactic nucleus (AGN), and their spatial profiles follow those of the ionized phase. This suggests that the outflowing molecular gas in the galaxy disk is being entrained by the AGN wind. We derive molecular and ionized outflow masses of ∼5.2 × 10

) of the eastern spiral arm is approximately 50−70% of the content of the western one. We interpret this as destruction or clearing of the molecular gas produced by the AGN wind impacting in the eastern side of the host galaxy (negative feedback process). The increase in molecular phase momentum implies that part of the kinetic energy from the AGN wind is transmitted to the molecular outflow. This suggests that in Seyfert-like AGN such as NGC 5643, the radiative or quasar and the kinetic or radio AGN feedback modes coexist and may shape the host galaxies even at kiloparsec scales through both positive and (mild) negative feedback.
Ridge regression has been widely applied to estimate under collinearity by defining a class of estimators that are dependent on the parameter k. The variance inflation factor (VIF) is applied to ...detect the presence of collinearity and also as an objective method to obtain the value of k in ridge regression. Contrarily to the definition of the VIF, the expressions traditionally applied in ridge regression do not necessarily lead to values of VIFs equal to or greater than 1. This work presents an alternative expression to calculate the VIF in ridge regression that satisfies the aforementioned condition and also presents other interesting properties.
Regioregular poly(3-hexylthiophene-2,5-diyl) (rr-P3HT), the workhorse of organic photovoltaics, has been recently exploited in bulk heterojunction (BHJ) configuration with phenyl-C61-butyric acid ...methyl ester (PCBM) for solution-processed hydrogen-evolving photocathodes, reaching cathodic photocurrents at 0 V vs RHE (J 0 V vs RHE) of up to 8 mA cm–2. The photoelectrochemical performance of these photocathodes strongly depends on the presence of the electron- (ESL) and hole- (HSL) selective layers. While TiO2 and its substoichiometric phases are consolidated ESL materials, the currently used HSLs (e.g., MoO3, CuI, PEDOTT:PSS, WO3) suffer electrochemical degradation under hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) working conditions. In this work, we use solution-processed graphene derivatives as HSL to boost the efficiency and durability of rr-P3HT:PCBM-based photocathodes, demonstrating record-high performance. In fact, our devices show cathodic J 0 V vs RHE of 6.01 mA cm–2, onset potential (V o) of 0.6 V vs RHE, ratiometric power-saved efficiency (φsaved) of 1.11%, and operational activity of 20 h in 0.5 M H2SO4 solution. Moreover, the designed photocathodes are effectively working in different pH environments ranging from acidic to basic. This is pivotal for their exploitation in tandem configurations, where photoanodes operate only in restricted electrochemical conditions. Furthermore, we demonstrate the scalability of our all-solution-processed approach by fabricating a large-area (∼9 cm2) photocathode on flexible substrate, achieving a remarkable cathodic J 0 V vs RHE of 2.8 mA cm–2, V o of 0.45 V vs RHE, and φsaved of 0.31%. This is the first demonstration of highly efficient rr-P3HT:PCBM flexible photocathodes based on low-cost and solution-processed manufacturing techniques.
Osteoporosis and obesity are major public health problems that are closely correlated, as they share various features, including a genetic predisposition. A genetic correlation between obesity and ...osteoporosis due to the biological common pathways of bone and fat metabolism, which implies pleiotropic genes regulating has been described. The objective of our study was to analyse whether polymorphisms in obesity-related genes modify the risk of osteoporotic bone fracture.
We studied 575 subjects from the Hortega Study. The subjects were followed-up for 12-14 years. 202 subjects were overweight, 143 obese and 221 had bone fractures. The distribution of 39 genetic variants in 22 obesity-related genes were studied.
The results showed a relationship between polymorphisms in the
and
genes and the susceptibility to osteoporotic fracture. The variant genotype of the rs2568958
polymorphism and the rs6499649, rs3751812, and rs8044769 genetic variants in
were associated with susceptibility to bone fracture. In the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that these variants in
and
genes have been associated with the susceptibility to osteoporotic bone fracture, supporting the hypothesis that the
and
genes might be candidates for osteoporosis and bone fracture.
In conclusion, this study associates obesity-related polymorphisms in the
and
genes with osteoporotic bone fracture, reinforcing the hypothesis that obesity and bone metabolism are closely correlated genetically.
Despite recognition of the immediate impact of infections caused by extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Enterobacterales (ESBL-PE) on human health, essential aspects of their molecular ...epidemiology remain under-investigated. This includes knowledge on the potential of a particular strain to persist in a host, mutational events during colonization, and the genetic diversity in individual patients over time. To investigate long-term genetic diversity of colonizing and infecting ESBL-Klebsiella pneumoniae species complex and ESBL-Escherichia coli in individual patients over time, we performed a ten-year longitudinal retrospective study and extracted clinical and microbiological data from electronic health records. In this investigation, 76 ESBL-K. pneumoniae species complex and 284 ESBL-E. coli isolates were recovered from 19 and 61 patients. Strain persistence was detected in all patients colonized with ESBL-K. pneumoniae species complex, and 83.6% of patients colonized with ESBL-E. coli. We frequently observed isolates of the same strain recovered from different body sites associated with either colonization or infection. Antimicrobial resistance genes, plasmid replicons, and whole ESBL-plasmids were shared between isolates regardless of chromosomal relatedness. Our study suggests that patients colonized with ESBL-producers may act as durable reservoirs for ongoing transmission of ESBLs, and that they are at prolonged risk of recurrent infection with colonizing strains.
Abstract The superb image quality, stability, and sensitivity of JWST permit deconvolution techniques to be pursued with a fidelity unavailable to ground-based observations. We present an assessment ...of several deconvolution approaches to improve image quality and mitigate the effects of the complex JWST point-spread function (PSF). The optimal deconvolution method is determined by using WebbPSF to simulate JWST’s complex PSF and MIRISim to simulate multiband JWST/Mid-Infrared Imager Module (MIRIM) observations of a toy model of an active galactic nucleus (AGN). Five different deconvolution algorithms are tested: (1) Kraken deconvolution, (2) Richardson–Lucy, (3) the adaptive imaging deconvolution algorithm, (4) sparse regularization with the Condat–Vũ algorithm, and (5) iterative Wiener filtering and thresholding. We find that Kraken affords the greatest FWHM reduction of the nuclear source of our MIRISim observations for the toy AGN model while retaining good photometric integrity across all simulated wave bands. Applying Kraken to Galactic Activity, Torus, and Outflow Survey (GATOS) multiband JWST/MIRIM observations of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 5728, we find that the algorithm reduces the FWHM of the nuclear source by a factor of 1.6–2.2 across all five filters. Kraken images facilitate detection of extended nuclear emission ∼2.″5 (∼470 pc, position angle ≃ 115°) in the SE–NW direction, especially at the longest wavelengths. We demonstrate that Kraken is a powerful tool to enhance faint features otherwise hidden in the complex JWST PSF.
This work intends to describe the physical properties of red blood cell (RBC) membranes in obese adults. The hypothesis driving this research is that obesity, in addition to increasing the amount of ...body fat, will also modify the lipid composition of membranes in cells other than adipocytes. Forty-nine control volunteers (16 male, 33 female, BMI 21.8 ± 5.6 and 21.5 ± 4.2 kg/m
, respectively) and 52 obese subjects (16 male and 36 female, BMI 38.2± 11.0 and 40.7 ± 8.7 kg/m
, respectively) were examined. The two physical techniques applied were atomic force microscopy (AFM) in the force spectroscopy mode, which allows the micromechanical measurement of penetration forces, and fluorescence anisotropy of trimethylammonium diphenylhexatriene (TMA-DPH), which provides information on lipid order at the membrane polar-nonpolar interface. These techniques, in combination with lipidomic studies, revealed a decreased rigidity in the interfacial region of the RBC membranes of obese as compared to control patients, related to parallel changes in lipid composition. Lipidomic data show an increase in the cholesterol/phospholipid mole ratio and a decrease in sphingomyelin contents in obese membranes. ω-3 fatty acids (e.g., docosahexaenoic acid) appear to be less prevalent in obese patient RBCs, and this is the case for both the global fatty acid distribution and for the individual major lipids in the membrane phosphatidylcholine (PC), phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) and phosphatidylserine (PS). Moreover, some ω-6 fatty acids (e.g., arachidonic acid) are increased in obese patient RBCs. The switch from ω-3 to ω-6 lipids in obese subjects could be a major factor explaining the higher interfacial fluidity in obese patient RBC membranes.
Osteoporosis is the most common bone disorder worldwide and is associated with a reduced quality of life with important clinical and economic consequences. The most widely accepted etiopathogenic ...hypothesis on the origin of osteoporosis and its complications is that they are a consequence of the synergic action of environmental and genetic factors. Bone is constantly being remodelled through anabolic and catabolic pathways in which inflammation, the NF-kB pathway and the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) are crucial. The aim of our study was to determine whether polymorphisms in genes implicated in inflammation, the NF-kB pathway and RAAS modified the risk of osteoporotic fracture. We analysed 221 patients with osteoporotic fracture and 354 controls without fracture from the HORTEGA sample after 12–14 years of follow up. In addition, we studied the genotypic distribution of 230 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in genes involved in inflammation, NF-kB pathway and RAAS. Our results showed that be carrier of the C allele of the rs2228145 IL6R polymorphism was the principal genetic risk factor associated with osteoporotic fracture. The results also showed that variant genotypes of the rs4762 AGT, rs4073 IL8, rs2070699 END1 and rs4291 ACE polymorphisms were important genetic risk factors for fracture. The study provides information about the genetic factors associated with inflammation, the NF-kB pathway and RAAS, which are involved in the risk of osteoporotic fracture and reinforces the hypothesis that genetic factors are crucial in the etiopathogenesis of osteoporosis and its complications.

Thin layers of in-plane anisotropic materials can support ultraconfined polaritons, whose wavelengths depend on the propagation direction. Such polaritons hold potential for the exploration of ...fundamental material properties and the development of novel nanophotonic devices. However, the real-space observation of ultraconfined in-plane anisotropic plasmon polaritons (PPs)-which exist in much broader spectral ranges than phonon polaritons-has been elusive. Here we apply terahertz nanoscopy to image in-plane anisotropic low-energy PPs in monoclinic Ag
Te platelets. The hybridization of the PPs with their mirror image-by placing the platelets above a Au layer-increases the direction-dependent relative polariton propagation length and the directional polariton confinement. This allows for verifying a linear dispersion and elliptical isofrequency contour in momentum space, revealing in-plane anisotropic acoustic terahertz PPs. Our work shows high-symmetry (elliptical) polaritons on low-symmetry (monoclinic) crystals and demonstrates the use of terahertz PPs for local measurements of anisotropic charge carrier masses and damping.
We present a spatially resolved study of the ionized gas in the central 2 kpc of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 2110 and investigate the role of its moderate-luminosity radio jet (kinetic radio power of
P
...jet

). We used new optical integral-field observations taken with the MEGARA spectrograph at the Gran Telescopio Canarias, which cover the 4300 − 5200 Å and 6100 − 7300 Å ranges with a spectral resolution of
R
≃ 5000 − 5900. We fitted the emission lines with a maximum of two Gaussian components, except at the position of the active galactic nucleus (AGN), where we used three. Aided by existing stellar kinematics, we used the observed velocity and velocity dispersion (
σ
) of the emission lines to classify the different kinematic components. The disk component is characterized by lines with
σ
≃ 60 − 200 km s
−1
. The outflow component has typical values of
σ
≃ 700 km s
−1
and is confined to the central 2.5″ ≃ 400 pc, which is coincident with the linear part of the radio jet detected in NGC 2110. At the AGN position, the O
III
λ
5007 line shows high velocity components that reach at least 1000 km s
−1
. This and the high velocity dispersions indicate the presence of outflowing gas outside the galaxy plane. Spatially resolved diagnostic diagrams reveal mostly low ionization (nuclear) emitting region-like excitation in the outflow and some regions in the disk, which could be due to the presence of shocks. However, there is also Seyfert-like excitation beyond the bending of the radio jet, which probably traces the edge of the ionization cone that intercepts with the disk of the galaxy. NGC 2110 follows the observational trends between the outflow properties and the jet radio power found for a few nearby Seyfert galaxies. All these pieces of information suggest that part of the observed ionized outflow in NGC 2110 might be driven by the radio jet. However, the radio jet was bent at radial distances of ∼200 pc (in projection) from the AGN, and beyond there, most of the gas in the galaxy disk is rotating.
