A low-cost, additively manufactured, biocompatible glucose sensor based on the changes in the unloaded quality factor (Formula Omitted) with a single split-ring resonator is presented. An exposition ...of the fundamentals for the use of the Formula Omitted as sensing parameter with microwave planar resonant sensors is shown. The convenience of this sensing parameter is analyzed from the theoretical point of view, and practical design and optimization guidelines are inferred with a special focus on the optimization of Formula Omitted sensitivity to glucose concentration. For practical demonstration and experimental assessment, a novel inverted microstrip configuration is considered, built upon a customized structure made with a certified biocompatible material thanks to 3-D printing techniques, which is aimed to provide for a stronger interaction between the electromagnetic fields and the sample. Two metallization solutions are investigated, yielding devices operating at 4.50 and 4.62 GHz, with operating Formula Omitted of 16.36 and 22.00, relative Formula Omitted sensitivities of 1.377 and 2.727, Formula Omitted sensitivities to glucose content within the physiological range of Formula Omitted per mg/dL and Formula Omitted per mg/dL, sensing areas of approximately Formula Omitted mm2 and total structure sizes of 950.0 Formula Omitted mm3. The devices show good performance with water–glucose solutions covering a wide range of concentrations, involving physiological as well as industry-related ones.
RESUMEN Introducción: las náuseas y vómitos postoperatorios se sitúan como la peor experiencia del paciente junto al dolor y el despertar intraoperatorio. Objetivo: determinar la incidencia de ...náuseas y vómitos postoperatorios en pacientes que reciben anestesia general para cirugía electiva. Métodos: se realizó un estudio observacional, descriptivo, de corte transversal en 2 334 pacientes desde enero de 2013 a diciembre de 2018, en el Hospital Universitario Clínico-Quirúrgico Arnaldo Milián Castro y el Hospital Universitario Dr. Celestino Hernández Robau, de Santa Clara. Se estudiaron las variables: sexo, edad, tabaquismo, antecedentes de cinetosis, náuseas y vómitos postoperatorios, agentes anestésicos y halogenados empleados, uso de opiodes perioperatorios, tipo de intervención quirúrgica según estancia hospitalaria y tratamiento al sitio quirúrgico, tiempo quirúrgico y aparición de náuseas y vómitos en las primeras 24 horas del postoperatorio. Resultados: la incidencia de náuseas y vómitos postoperatorios fue de 15,9%, con predominio en el sexo femenino, en pacientes menores de 50 años de edad, los no fumadores, los que presentaban antecedentes de náuseas y vómitos postoperatorios o cinetosis, en los que se utilizó agentes halogenados y opiodes postoperatorios, en cirugía no ambulatoria y de enfoque convencional, y en los pacientes con tiempos quirúrgicos iguales o mayores a una hora. Conclusiones: la incidencia de náuseas y vómitos postoperatorios fue baja y se estableció una probabilidad de náuseas y vómitos postoperatorios desde ningún factor hasta 7 factores de riesgo de: 5,5 %, 6,9 %, 13,3 %, 29,7 %, 40 %, 50 %, 60 % y 71,4 %, respectivamente.
En este estudio se analizó la calidad y el comportamiento germinativo de semillas de diferentes poblaciones localizadas en un gradiente de precipitación anual oeste-este (500 a 150 mm) en cuatro ...especies de gramíneas forrajeras nativas (Bromus setifolius, Hordeum comosum, Festuca pallescens y Poa ligularis), del NO de Chubut. Se estimó el peso y el porcentaje de semillas llenas a nivel inter- e intra-específico. Las semillas fueron sembradas en un ambiente común y se calculó el porcentaje de germinación y la velocidad de emergencia para las especies y las poblaciones. En este trabajo se presentan datos relacionados a la germinación de semillas recolectadas en un año en particular (2015) de estas cuatro especies y se discuten principalmente los resultados obtenidos para P. ligularis, la especie que presentó mayor variabilidad entre las poblaciones analizadas. En P. ligularis un gran porcentaje de semillas de la población del sitio más árido germinaron/emergieron en menos días. Esta característica podría estar asociada a adaptaciones fisiológicas de las plantas para germinar, emerger y establecerse rápidamente ante la escasa disponibilidad de agua en este sitio. Los genotipos de esta población particular podrían ser utilizados para programas de restauración de ambientes áridos con precipitación media anual menor a 150 mm. Finalmente, debido a la variabilidad observada al menos en P. ligularis, se sugiere que para futuros programas de mejoramiento con estas especies nativas sería necesario analizar un mayor número de poblaciones para seleccionar los potenciales bancos de semilla.
Our study aimed to describe the glomerular diseases, both primary glomerular disease (PGD) and secondary glomerular disease (SGD) in the Colombian Caribbean based on the first regional Colombian ...Nephropathy Registry (NEFRORED®). A descriptive and retrospective study of adult patients with glomerular diseases from the Colombian Caribbean region was made. All diagnoses by renal biopsy with light microscopy and immunofluorescence obtained between January 2008 and June 2018 were recorded. Eight hundred and seventy-one renal biopsies were obtained. The main clinical indication for biopsy was nephritic syndrome (36%). SGD was more frequent than PGD (55% vs. 45%). Within SGD group, lupus nephritis (LN) was the most frequent etiology (83%). Within PGD group, membranous nephropathy (33%) and focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) (19%) were the most common glomerular diseases. At a 24-month follow-up, the patients with FSGS and paraproteinemia-mediated glomerular disease had the worst renal survival prognosis. This is the first Colombian Nephropathy Registry in a Caribbean population, demonstrating a high predominance of SGD due to LN.
