-disorders in patients of non-Asian ethnicity. Oocyte maturation defects of monogenic origin are a growing group of disorders that endocrinologists and reproductive medicine specialists should be aware in order to provide referral to genetics for establish a correct and opportune diagnosis.

Aim: To analyze the presence of Y chromosome microdeletions in males of Mexican couples with idiopathic recurrent pregnancy losses (RPL).
Methods: Seventy‐one males from couples with RPL and 66 ...fertile males as controls were studied. DNA was isolated from peripheral lymphocytes and used to run multiplex polymerase chain reactions. Regions AZFa (sY84, sY86), AZFb (sY127, sY134) and AZFc (sY254, sY255) of the Y chromosome were analyzed according to valid guidelines recommended by the European Academy of Andrology and the European Molecular Genetics Quality Network. Also, the sequence tagged sites (STSs): DYS262 (sY67), DYS220 (sY129), DYF85S1 (sY150), DYF86S1 (sY152) and DYF87S1 (sY153) were included in order to analyze STSs previously reported as deleted. A power analysis to support our simple size was performed.
Results: Results show an absence of Y chromosome microdeletions in males of couples with RPL and controls with an acceptable statistical power.
Conclusion: The study did not show an association of recurrent pregnancy loss and Y chromosome microdeletions in Mexican male partners. Based on the results, the study of Y chromosome microdeletions in couples with RPL is not considered clinically relevant.
To investigate the possible association among MTHFR polymorfhisms, environmental factors and cervical cancer (CC) in the Mexican population.
Seventy patients with CC and 89 control women were ...questioned about clinical data and their 677 and 1298 genotypes of MTHFR gene were analized.
Multipregnancies (0-2 vs. > or = 3, OR 2.1), an early age of first intercourse (IVS) (17 < or = vs. > or = 18 years, OR 4.3) or both factors (OR 3.5) were significantly associated with CC. MTHFR 677, 1298 polymorphisms and their combinations were not different between cases and controls. However, a significant association between pregnancies, IVS and MTHFR polymorphisms (presence of 1298C allele or 677TT genotype) was observed. The 1298C allele plus multipregnancies and IVS < or = 17 years, or both factors, increased 4.3, 5.3, and 11.8 times the risk for CC, respectively, while 677TT genotype changed the risk 2.0, 1.9, and 4.2 times, respectively.
The 1298C allele increases the risk of CC strongly in women with multipregnancies and early age of IVS, while 677TT genotype has a lower risk without becoming a protection factor.
Objetivo. Buscar la asociación entre polimorfismos de la enzima metilentetrahidrofolato reductasa (MTHFR), factores ambientales y cáncer cérvico-uterino (CaCU) en mujeres del noreste de México. ...Métodos. Setenta pacientes con CaCU y 89 mujeres controles se sometieron a un interrogatorio clínico y a genotipificación de los polimorfismos 677C T y 1298A C del gen MTHFR. Resultados. La multigestación (0-2 vs.> 3, OR 2.1), un temprano inicio de vida sexual (IVS) (17 < vs. > 18 años, OR 4.3) o la combinación de ambos factores (OR 3.5), estuvieron asociados significativamente al CaCU. Los polimorfismos de MTHFR 677, 1298 y sus combinaciones no fueron diferentes entre casos y controles. Sin embargo, se observó una interacción significativa entre las gestaciones, el IVS y los polimorfismos de MTHFR (presencia del alelo 1298C o del genotipo 677TT). El alelo 1298C combinado con multigestación, con un IVS < 17 años, o con ambos factores, incrementó el riesgo para CaCU en 4.3, 5.3 y 11.8 veces, respectivamente, en tanto que el genotipo 677TT modificó este riesgo a 2.0, 1.9, y 4.2 veces, respectivamente. Conclusión. El alelo 1298C incrementa considerablemente el riesgo para CaCU en mujeres multigestas y con un IVS temprano, en tanto que el genotipo 677TT disminuye este riesgo, pero sin llegar a convertirse en un factor protector.
Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is an aggressive subtype of breast cancer tumors. Comparisons between TNBC and non-triple negative breast cancer (nTNBC) may help to differentiate key components ...involved in TNBC neoplasms. The purpose of the study was to analyze the expression profile of TNBC versus nTNBC tumors in a homogeneous population from northeastern Mexico. A prospective study of 50 patients was conducted (25 TNBC and 25 nTNBC). Clinic parameters were equally distributed for TNBC and nTNBC: age at diagnosis (51 vs 47 years, p=0.1), glucose levels (107 mg/dl vs 104 mg/dl, p=0.64), and body mass index (28 vs 29, p=0.14), respectively. Core biopsies were collected for histopathological diagnosis and gene expression analyses. Total RNA was isolated and expression profiling was performed. 40 genes showed differential expression pattern in TNBC tumors. Among these, 9 over-expressed genes (
, and
), and one under-expressed (
) gene are involved in general metabolism. Based on this biochemical peculiarity, and the over-expression of
and
(involved in tumor growth and metastasis, respectively) we validated by qPCR the expression profile of 7 genes out of the signature. In this report, a new gene signature for TNBC is proposed. To our knowledge, this is the first TNBC signature which describes genes involved in general metabolism. The findings may be pertinent for Mexican patients and require to be evaluated in further ethnic groups and populations.
Mexican oregano Poliomintha longiflora Gray located in the municipality of Higueras, Nuevo Leon, Mexico was collected during the autumn (September, OCO), winter (January, OCI) and summer (June, OCV) ...seasons, under cultivation conditions. It was also collected in wild conditions during the autumn (OSO). Essential oil (EO) was extracted from leaves and the color, refractive index and density were reported. The EO yield, antioxidant activity by ORAC assay, thymol and carvacrol concentration and antibacterial activity were statistically compared (p-value = 0.05). Among the various harvests, the highest EO yield, antioxidant activity, thymol and carvacrol content and antibacterial activity against Salmonella Typhi were observed in leaves harvested in autumn. In order to compare wild oregano with cultivated oregano, analyses were performed in the season with the highest essential oil yield and antioxidant activity, recorded in autumn. The main difference found was the ratio of thymol:carvacrol in wild oregano oil, which was 1:8.6, while in cultivated oregano, it was approximately 1:2, which was maintained in all three seasons. The EO on wild conditions showed the best antibacterial activity in Salmonella Typhi. On the other hand, wild and cultivated oregano showed similar antioxidant activity. One advantage of the use of cultivated oregano is that its supply is guaranteed, in contrast to that of wild oregano.

Abstract
Working with multiple mentors is a critical way for students to expand their network, gain opportunities, and better prepare for future scholastic or professional ventures. However, students ...from underrepresented groups (UR) are less likely to be mentored or have access to mentors, particularly in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. We developed and implemented a workshop, to provide the necessary foundation for students to be better prepared for establishing future mentorships throughout graduate and professional school. Faculty well-versed in the area of effective mentorship from multiple universities developed and delivered a 1.5-hour workshop to address the roles of a mentor, especially when it comes to UR students, and how students may effectively work with multiple mentors. This workshop was delivered to a group of students from, the Historically Black College and University (HBCU), Winston-Salem State University, and a pre/post-10-point Likert scale-based survey was administered where 1 represented strongly disagree and 10 was strongly agree. The questions used in this seminar were newly designed by the authors as program evaluations. We analyzed the raw data with nonparametric tests for comparison within paired samples. Wilcoxon matched-pairs and signed-rank tests showed statistically significant growth in student self-ratings related to the workshop learning objectives. The ‘How to Handle More than One Mentor to Achieve Excellence’ workshop was well-received as a component of pregraduate and preprofessional training. Incorporating workshops like this may increase student preparedness around developing and cultivating healthy mentorship relationships throughout STEM training.

In recent years, epidemiological studies have strongly related obesity with an increased risk of developing postmenopausal breast cancer. The aromatization of fatty tissue increases the levels of ...estradiol and adiponectin, which is correlated with the body mass index (BMI). It is of interest to investigate the effect of reducing BMI on estradiol, adiponectin, and IGF-1, as reducing BMI could be a new strategy to limit the risk of recurrence during the adjuvant treatment of breast cancer.
The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of reduced dietary fat on the levels of serum estradiol, adiponectin, and IGF-1 among postmenopausal Mexican women with breast cancer.
In this controlled clinical trial, 100 female patients were randomly divided into two groups and followed for six months. Group 1 (n = 50) was subjected to reduced dietary fat, whereas Group 2 (n = 50) was subjected to a control diet. The levels of serum estradiol and testosterone were determined using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, whereas the concentrations of adiponectin and IGF-1 were determined using a radioimmunoassay.
The patients subjected to reduced dietary fat showed a significant difference in BMI (27.93 ± 4.45 vs 26.05 ± 2.65;
= 0.01) and waist circumference (99.92 vs 91.59 cm;
= 0.0001) after the treatment. Moreover, a significant decrease in serum estradiol was observed (21.23 ± 14.32 vs 16.05 ± 10.25 ng/mL;
< 0.001). The adiponectin concentration also decreased significantly (47.53 ± 12.19 vs 42.52 ± 12.34 µg/mL;
= 0.004), while IGF-1 and testosterone did not show significant changes (
> 0.05). In addition, BMI had a relationship with serum adiponectin (
= -0.27;
= 0.02) and estradiol (
= 0.37;
= 0.001).
The current study shows that reducing BMI decreases serum estradiol and adiponectin. Large clinical trials are needed to investigate the role of adiponectin in breast cancer development in obese women.
