The behavioural context provides opportunities for studying the use and characteristics of acoustic signals. We analysed the context-specific use of acoustic signals in a population of Atlantic ...spotted dolphins around the Canary archipelago. We calculated the whistle diversity, the mean value of whistle stereotypy and the repetition rate of both tonal and burst-pulsed sounds. Eleven parameters of frequency, signal duration and modulation were measured from each whistle. Results showed that whistle diversity and whistle and chirp repetition rates were negatively correlated with group size, but only whistle diversity and the mean number of stereotypy were related to behavioural activity. Whistles were more complexly modulated during high behavioural activity than when engaged in moderate movements. Furthermore, during socialising and feeding, the highest mean value of stereotypy was displayed, and the parameters of non-stereotyped whistles had lower variability. Our results suggest the use of a complex communication system to improve the efficiency of communication through context-specific signal combinations, the usage of different signals and their modulation pattern. Our study produces evidence to support the hypothesis that acoustic plasticity and differences in call characteristics may be indicative of behavioural and social acoustic environment.
Objective
To assess distribution, uptake, and persistence of radiolabeled mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) using scintigraphy after intravenous regional limb perfusion (RLP) and subcutaneous injections ...in standing, sedated horses.
Study Design
Experimental study.
Animals
Horses (n = 12).
Methods
Six horses had RLP performed through the cephalic vein on 1 limb and subcutaneous injection in the metacarpal area in the opposite limb. The other 6 horses had RLP performed through the lateral palmar digital vein and subcutaneous injection in the coronary band. A pneumatic tourniquet was used for the RLP. MSC were labeled with technetium‐HMPAO. Scintigraphic images were obtained at the time of injection, 1, 6, and 24 hours later. Results of RLP were compared with results from previous studies where similar injections were performed in anesthetized horses.
Results
Both RLP techniques led to greater variability, lower uptake, lower persistence, and poorer distribution when compared to results previously reported for horses under general anesthesia. The subcutaneous injections in the metacarpal area and coronary band resulted in MSC loss to the general circulation but no evidence of local migration.
Conclusion
Due to partial or complete failure of the tourniquet, RLP performed in the standing horse as described is less efficient than performed under general anesthesia. Further work is needed to optimize the use of tourniquets to perform RLP for MSC administration in standing patients. The subcutaneous injections did not result in local migration in these normal horses.

Este ...proceso enseñanza-aprendizaje analizó las ventajas y desventajas del uso de estas herramientas virtuales en un contexto. La investigación fue de tipo básica, enfoque cuantitativo y diseño descriptivo correlacional. Se utilizó un muestreo aleatorio simple, se aplicó un cuestionario a 80 docentes universitarios, y de esta manera, se obtuvo los datos sobre el uso de los recursos en el proceso de aprendizaje del inglés. El coeficiente de correlación Rho de Spearman fue de 0.230 lo que indicó la relación directa entre variables, concluyendo que la integración de tic es un desafío.
A novel multicomponent chemoenzymatic strategy for the preparation of enantioenriched β-acyloxy thioethers has been developed. This robust methodology employs mild bases, air atmosphere, room ...temperature and avoids the use of foul-smelling thiols. Instead, potassium thioacetate is employed as a universal sulfur source. This chemoselective strategy tolerates aromatic and aliphatic components and diverse functional groups. The chirality is enzymatically defined by ADH-catalyzed bioreduction of α-haloketones delivering an enantioenriched halohydrin which is one of the three components, and the optical purity remains untouched in the final product. Semipreparative scale multicomponent reaction affords high yield of the products (up to 96%).
The mechanisms underlying liver disease in patients with COVID-19 are not entirely known. The aim is to investigate, by means of novel statistical techniques, the changes over time in the ...relationship between inflammation markers and liver damage markers in relation to survival in COVID-19. The study included 221 consecutive patients admitted to the hospital during the first COVID-19 wave in Spain. Generalized additive mixed models were used to investigate the influence of time and inflammation markers on liver damage markers in relation to survival. Joint modeling regression was used to evaluate the temporal correlations between inflammation markers (serum C-reactive protein CRP, interleukin-6, plasma D-dimer, and blood lymphocyte count) and liver damage markers, after adjusting for age, sex, and therapy. The patients who died showed a significant elevation in serum aspartate transaminase (AST) and alkaline phosphatase levels over time. Conversely, a decrease in serum AST levels was observed in the survivors, who showed a negative correlation between inflammation markers and liver damage markers (CRP with serum AST, alanine transaminase ALT, and gamma-glutamyl transferase GGT; and D-dimer with AST and ALT) after a week of hospitalization. Conversely, most correlations were positive in the patients who died, except lymphocyte count, which was negatively correlated with AST, GGT, and alkaline phosphatase. These correlations were attenuated with age. The patients who died during COVID-19 infection displayed a significant elevation of liver damage markers, which is correlated with inflammation markers over time. These results are consistent with the role of systemic inflammation in liver damage during COVID-19.
Cellular signaling via epidermal growth factor (EGF) and EGF-like ligands can determine cell fate and behavior. Osteoblasts, which are responsible for forming and mineralizing osteoid, express EGF ...receptors and alter rates of proliferation and differentiation in response to EGF receptor activation. Transgenic mice over-expressing the EGF-like ligand betacellulin (BTC) exhibit increased cortical bone deposition; however, because the transgene is ubiquitously expressed in these mice, the identity of cells affected by BTC and responsible for increased cortical bone thickness remains unknown. We have therefore examined the influence of BTC upon mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) and pre-osteoblast differentiation and proliferation. BTC decreases the expression of osteogenic markers in both MSCs and pre-osteoblasts; interestingly, increases in proliferation require hypoxia-inducible factor-alpha (HIF-α), as an HIF antagonist prevents BTC-driven proliferation. Both MSCs and pre-osteoblasts express EGF receptors ErbB1, ErbB2, and ErbB3, with no change in expression under osteogenic differentiation. These are the first data that demonstrate an influence of BTC upon MSCs and the first to implicate HIF-α in BTC-mediated proliferation.
This paper presents a linguistic and interpretative analysis of the use of conceptual metaphors in the field of mental health, taking as a field of observation the use of Twitter in the first edition ...of Mad Pride Day in Spain, held on May 20, 2018. The objective is to give a first-person account of the attitudes expressed by activists. The results show a questioning of the coercive logics produced by psychiatric care, a problematization of the hegemonic model as a whole, a criticism of the oppression implied by stigma, communication problems with professionals in the field of mental health, as well as demands for greater dialogue with them. This analysis has allowed us to understand linguistic modes of resignifying the field of mental health, and also to account for the tensions between subjective perceptions of the people diagnosed and the productions of the hegemonic medical model.
The deep sea is the largest ecosystem on Earth, yet little is known about the processes driving patterns of genetic diversity in its inhabitants. Here, we investigated the macro- and ...microevolutionary processes shaping genomic population structure and diversity in two poorly understood, globally distributed, deep-sea predators: Cuvier’s beaked whale (Ziphius cavirostris) and Blainville’s beaked whale (Mesoplodon densirostris). We used double-digest restriction associated DNA (ddRAD) and whole mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) sequencing to characterise genetic patterns using phylogenetic trees, cluster analysis, isolation-by-distance, genetic diversity and differentiation statistics. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs; Blainville’s n = 43 samples, SNPs=13988; Cuvier’s n = 123, SNPs= 30479) and mitogenomes (Blainville’s n = 27; Cuvier’s n = 35) revealed substantial hierarchical structure at a global scale. Both species display significant genetic structure between the Atlantic, Indo-Pacific and in Cuvier’s, the Mediterranean Sea. Within major ocean basins, clear differentiation is found between genetic clusters on the east and west sides of the North Atlantic, and some distinct patterns of structure in the Indo-Pacific and Southern Hemisphere. We infer that macroevolutionary processes shaping patterns of genetic diversity include biogeographical barriers, highlighting the importance of such barriers even to highly mobile, deep-diving taxa. The barriers likely differ between the species due to their thermal tolerances and evolutionary histories. On a microevolutionary scale, it seems likely that the balance between resident populations displaying site fidelity, and transient individuals facilitating gene flow, shapes patterns of connectivity and genetic drift in beaked whales. Based on these results, we propose management units to facilitate improved conservation measures for these elusive species.

Este artículo consiste en un breve estudio acerca del músico de tango argentino Julián Peralta, desde un punto de vista mixto que plantea un análisis musical e histórico. Se establece una ...caracterización de su estilo y trayectoria para proponer la relevancia de esta figura como una bisagra de doble dimensión: por una parte, de tipo histórica, pues se situaría en el eje de un nuevo ciclo de resurgimiento de este género, como protagonista de una «generación decisiva»; por otra, de tipo estético, ya que Peralta ha desplegado un estilo musical propio, mediante creaciones influyentes en la escena del tango contemporáneo del siglo XXI. Su sello sonoro es particularmente sombrío, lo que en algún momento condujo a ser considerado bajo el epíteto de «tango–Drácula» en algún intercambio de palabras entre músicos. Esta investigación recoge ese concepto para articular —hermenéuticamente— la organización de este caso de estudio, rescatando la combinación simbólica de elementos pertenecientes tanto a la tradición como a la modernidad del tango.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of cryoconcentration assisted by centrifugation-filtration on the bioactive compounds and the microbiological quality of aqueous maqui ...(Aristotelia chilensis (Mol.) Stuntz) and calafate (Berberis microphylla G. Forst) extracts pretreated with high-pressure homogenization (HPH). Aqueous extracts were prepared from fresh fruits which were treated with HPH (predefined pressure and number of passes). The best pretreatment was determined by aerobic mesophilic, fungal, and yeast counts. Treated extracts were frozen at −30 °C in special tubes and centrifuged at 4000 rpm for 10 min to obtain the cryoconcentrated product. The optimal pretreatment conditions for HPH were 200 MPa and one pass in which the extracts exhibited no microorganism counts. Cryoconcentration by freezing and subsequent centrifugation-filtration in a single cycle showed high process efficiency (>95%) in both soluble solids and bioactive compounds (total polyphenols and anthocyanins) and antioxidant capacity of the fresh fruits and extracts. The HPH treatment and subsequent cryoconcentration assisted by centrifugation-filtration is an efficient technology to obtain concentrates with good microbiological quality and a high content of bioactive compounds.
