Aim
The knowledge of a species biogeographical patterns greatly enhances our understanding of geographical ecology, which can improve identifying key conservation needs. Yet, this knowledge is still ...scarce for many marine top predators. Here, we aim to analyse movement patterns and spatial structuring of a large predator, the short‐finned pilot whale Globicephala macrorhynchus, over a wide geographical area.
Location
North‐east Atlantic, in Macaronesian archipelagos (Azores, Madeira and Canaries) and Iberian Peninsula (Sagres).
Methods
We used likelihood techniques to estimate residency times and transition probabilities and carried out social analysis from individual photographic identification data, and analysed year‐round distribution from effort‐related sightings, collated between 1999 and 2015.
Results
The best‐fitting models included emigration and reimmigration and showed different residency times within each archipelago. A total of 26 individual movements from 21 individuals (from a sample of >2,300 individuals) were recorded between Madeira and the neighbouring archipelagos, and heterogeneous transition probabilities were estimated within and between areas. A social network diagram showed associations from animals with distinct residency patterns. Higher significant sighting rates were recorded during autumn in the Azores and Madeira.
Main conclusions
The variation in site fidelity and year‐round occupancy among areas of the Macaronesia is consistent with some degree of population structuring, which combined with a connectivity network and seasonal inflows from animals inhabiting offshore waters, support the development of a complex social and geographical ecology in short‐finned pilot whales. The combination of techniques applied in this study was an effective way to estimate parameters of movement, which could be a good practice to be used for other scenarios and species.
Given uncertain popularity of new products by location, fast fashion retailer Zara faces a trade-off. Large initial shipments to stores reduce lost sales in the critical first days of the product ...life cycle, but maintaining stock at the warehouse allows restocking flexibility once initial sales are observed. In collaboration with Zara, we develop and test a decision support system featuring a data-driven model of forecast updating and a dynamic optimization formulation for allocating limited stock by location over time. A controlled field experiment run worldwide with 34 articles during the 2012 season showed an increase in total average season sales by approximately 2% and a reduction in the number of unsold units at the end of the regular selling season by approximately 4%.
Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) represent a class of multipotent progenitor cells that have been isolated from multiple tissue sites. Of these, adipose tissue and bone marrow offer advantages in terms ...of access, abundance, and the extent of their documentation in the literature. This review focuses on the in vitro differentiation capability of cells derived from adult human tissue. Multiple, independent studies have demonstrated that MSCs can commit to mesodermal (adipocyte, chondrocyte, hematopoietic support, myocyte, osteoblast, tenocyte), ectodermal (epithelial, glial, neural), and endodermal (hepatocyte, islet cell) lineages. The limitations and promises of these studies in the context of tissue engineering are discussed.
Teosinte (Dioon mejiae) is a dioecious tree native to Honduras, whose seeds are used to make flour for the preparation of traditional foods and beverages. The objective was to evaluate the ...nutritional and physicochemical composition of teosinte flour for the first time. Using diverse techniques, teosinte flour was found to be a high-calorie food rich in total carbohydrates and mainly composed of starch, with an amylopectin:amylose ratio of 2:1 and a concentration of resistant starch greater than 50%. Its proteins were similar to other cereals in which the essential amino acids glutamic acid, leucine, and especially lysine were the most important. Some 75% of its total dietary fiber was insoluble. The fatty acid profile was characterized by a high unsaturated fatty acid content in which oleic acid (C18:1) and linoleic acid (C18:2) predominated. As for minerals, teosinte flour had higher iron content, lower sodium concentration, and similar zinc, calcium, and phosphorus content to other cereal flours. We highlight that teosinte flour has nutrients and qualities that convert it into flour with excellent nutritional abilities and health benefits; it is also a very good industrial and technological alternative to be mixed mainly with types of flour from other sources.
The potential application of multistep continuous-flow systems has had a great impact on the syntheses of active pharmaceutical ingredients, natural products, and commodity chemicals. In this report, ...the highly efficient combination of a chemical reduction and a photochemical Csp2 –H activation reaction for selenylation of biologically relevant electron-rich arenes was achieved by means of a continuous-flow process. First, the reduction of alkyl and aryl selenocyanates by Rongalite was achieved giving the corresponding diselenides; second, the photoactivation of the Se–Se bond resulted in the selenylation of electron-rich arenes, both steps from good to excellent yields. In all cases, the reaction time was shortened, and isolated yields were improved when compared to batch reaction conditions. Furthermore, connecting both reactions in a multistep continuous-flow sequence was possible even when reductive and photooxidative transformations were coupled.
Objective: To evaluate use of a diode laser to induce tendinopathy in the superficial digital flexor tendon (SDFT) of horses. Animals: 4 equine cadavers and 5 adult horses. Procedures: Cadaveric SDFT ...samples were exposed to a diode laser at various energy settings to determine an appropriate energy for use in in vivo experiments; lesion size was assessed histologically. In vivo experiments involved laser energy induction of lesions in the SDFT (2 preliminary horses 0, 25, 75, and 87.5 J and 3 study horses 0 and 125 J) and assessment of lesions. Study duration was 21 days, and lesions were assessed clinically and via ultrasonography, MRI, and histologic evaluation. Results: Lesion induction in cadaveric tissues resulted in a spherical cavitated core with surrounding tissue coagulation. Lesion size had a linear relationship (R2 = 0.9) with the energy administered. Size of in vivo lesions in preliminary horses indicated that larger lesions were required. In study horses, lesions induced with 125 J were ultrasonographically and histologically larger than were control lesions. At proximal and distal locations, pooled (preliminary and study horses) ultrasonographically assessed lesions were discrete and variable in size (mean ± SEM lesion percentage for control lesions, 8.5 ± 3%; for laser lesions, 12.2 ± 1.7%). Ultrasonography and MRI measurements were associated (R2 > 0.84) with cross-sectional area measurements. Conclusions and Clinical Relevance: In vivo diode laser–induced lesions did not reflect cadaveric lesions in repeatable size. Further research is required before diode lasers can reliably be used for inducing tendinopathy.
Abstract
MIPs
) mit unterschiedlichen Faserlängen miteinander vergleichen.
Objective
To evaluate the outcome in patients undergoing photoselective vaporization of the prostate for benign prostatic obstruction as part of the Clinical Research Office of the Endourological ...Society Global GreenLight Laser Study.
Methods
Data were collected on 713 patients with lower urinary tract symptoms suggestive of benign prostatic obstruction undergoing photoselective vaporization of the prostate at 25 centers worldwide, between April 2010 and April 2012. Three types of GreenLight laser powers were used: 80 W, 120 W or 180 W. Intraoperative and postoperative complications were recorded. Outcome parameters measured at baseline, 6–12 weeks, 6 months and 12 months were: uroflow measurements, International Prostate Symptom Score; prostate‐specific antigen and International Index of Erectile Function.
Results
Operating time was shortest with the 180‐W laser at 53.8 min. Intraoperatively, bleeding occurred in 3.1% of patients. Statistically significant changes were reported in maximum flow rate, postvoid residual urine, International Prostate Symptom Score, quality of life score and prostate‐specific antigen (P < 0.01) at each time‐point assessed for the 80‐ and 120‐W lasers as well as for the 180‐W laser, with the exception of prostate‐specific antigen at 6 months and 12 months. There were 14 Clavien–Dindo grade III‐A complications and two grade III‐B. The incontinence rate at 12 months was 6.3%, 4.5%, and 2.6% for the 80, 120 and 180 W lasers, respectively. The overall blood transfusion rate was 0.4%.
Conclusions
Objective and subjective improvement after GreenLight laser treatment worldwide was significant at 1‐year follow up. Morbidity and complications were low. Although not a randomized control study, the data can provide an indication of the outcome of the different GreenLight laser powers.
Structural failure due to local soil subsidence is a severe issue in the urban environment, particularly in cities located on thick sediments. We present such a case from Mexico City, where the ...near-surface soil characteristics beneath a subsided building were examined using 3D ambient noise tomography. We acquired data using dense arrays of 4.5 Hz vertical geophones placed around the building in two geometries. We performed cross-correlation analyses for 12 central frequencies in the range of 4–12 Hz to built tomographic images of surface wave group velocity. The results indicated a low-velocity layer (~ 120 m/s) for the first 10 m depth which we interpret as the typical clay layer of the Lake Zone of the city. Below, a more complex stiff layer (~ 500 m/s) appeared with significant lateral variations. In another independent analysis of HVSR, we observed that the site period varied between 0.4 and 0.55 s, which further signify the complexity of the subsurface. Thus, the conspicuous structural failure was due to the lack of stiffness of the shallow foundation, which subjected to differential motions between consistent materials from the foot of Chapultepec hill, and the soft lacustrine clays of the Lake Zone. As shown in this case, the seismic response variations in short distances, and short periods, for near-source events could be of great importance as demonstrated in Mexico City during the recent Puebla-Morelos Earthquake (M7.1) of September 19th, 2017.
