Improper landfills (waste dumps) are common waste disposal systems in developing countries and represent sources of environmental pollution. These sites defy researchers and managers because they ...lack structures to collect liquid, solid and gaseous samples, which make it challenging to monitor local environmental quality. In this work, we show one device for sample collection to monitor leachate quality in a closed waste dump in Brazil. During the installation of this device (Leachate Monitoring Station, LMS), interesting facts about the structural, physical, and chemical composition of an old dump could be visualized. Two different kinds of leachate were found: the accumulated leachate (AL), a thick dark fluid entrapped above non-degraded material, and the mobile leachate (ML), a lighter liquid which flowed into the LMS, and thus was not stagnant like AL. In the AL, the chemical oxygen demand and total ammoniacal nitrogen average concentrations were about 21,500 mg/L and 1000 mg/L, respectively, which were considerably higher than the ML concentrations, of about 1100 mg/L and 200 mg/L, respectively, for the same parameters. Thus, despite the lower concentrations of hazardous substances in the ML, the waste body stores pockets of leachate (AL) with significant concentrations of hazardous compounds, even after 15 years of the dumpsite closure. Moreover, waste solubilization assays showed that the solid material could not be considered inert according to the Brazilian Standard Norm NBR 10004/2004. The installation of the LMS enabled a new understanding about pollutant accumulation inside waste deposits and provided an effective, low-cost tool to monitor leachate production in non-sanitary landfills. The results warn about the risks that old dumpsites still pose to the environment and reinforce the need for a post-care action plan for managing uncontrolled waste deposits.
In urban centers, precipitation always been related to problems such as floods and spread of disease. To solve them, it is common to make hydraulic interventions in the urban drainage systems. For this, it is necessary to know the conditions of the watershed and the consequences that any change in the environment can cause. Therefore, hydrological models are used to predict the river behavior in opposite to precipitation events, increasing the efficiency of the hydraulic interventions and reducing the associated risks to these. For the use of models, it is necessary to have several hydrological parameters related to the basin such as drainage area, river length, slope of the thalweg, type of soil cover etc. Trough the technological advancement, the parameter determination becomes more accurate as well as the models, and the Geographic Information System (GIS) and remote sensing appear as powerful tools to support hydrological studies. In this study, we have applied the automatic supervised classification process by the Object-Oriented Analysis method to a high resolution satellite image of the córrego do Gregório watershed, to classify soil coverage and to determine the hydrological parameters curve-number (CN by the SCS method), vegetation degree (PP), area (A), length (L), and slope of thalwegs (S) of the sub-basins of the córrego do Gregório watershed, for which the results were quite satisfactory. Finally, a hydrological model for the São Carlos macrodrainage system called EESC model (1993) was updated with the new parameters, obtaining final hydrographs with differences from the original model up to 33.96% for peak discharge (Qp), 77.78% for peak time (tp) and 29.86% for total volume of runoff.
Urban development significantly alters the natural cycle of river basins. With the emergence of sustainable urban drainage, rapid stormwater runoff gave way to recovering the natural characteristics of the river basin through the urban development planning coupled with the use of compensatory techniques that promote the infiltration and detention of stormwater. However, in already urbanized basins, the use of compensatory techniques have limited reach, especially by the high impermeabilization of the basins, the lack of concern with drainage during urban sprawl, low space availability and high implementation costs of structural measures of urban drainage. Thus, the principles of sustainable urban drainage are often considered inadequate to consolidated urban environments. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the performance of the conjunction use of several compensatory techniques defined after developing suitability maps for the urban basin and hydrologic simulation. We evaluated detention basins, permeable pavements, rain gardens, green roofs, infiltration trenches and individuals cisterns. We assessed the performance of compensatory techniques working individually and working together. Suitability maps were created for positioning and quantification of compensatory techniques in the watershed. The results showed that extensive application of compensatory techniques in an urban environment could lead to significant improvements in peak flow reduction and control of hydrograms volume, with best individual performance up to 35.5% peak reduction and 32.48% hydrograms volume reduction (TR 2 years) using infiltration trenches and 12.77% peak flow reduction and 9 57% volume reduction (TR 100 years) using green roofs. Simulating the most efficient compensatory techniques working together, the results shown 59.00% of peak flow reductions and 46.37% of volume reduction to 2-years rainfalls and 25.66% peak flow reduction and 26.45% of volume reduction in 100-years rainfalls. Thus, we concluded that the adaptation of urbanized areas to sustainable urban drainage principles is possible and efficient, and good results can be obtained even in the more densely occupied environments. However, the lack of planning for urban development and the limited space availability prevents the optimization of devices spatial arrangement and limits the effectiveness of certain compensatory techniques, especially those large as detention basins.
