•Preliminary design of liquid hydrogen PEMFC system for aviation.•Integrated sizing approach based on single-cell electrochemical modeling.•System-level sizing linked to stack operating point and ...aircraft mission profile.•Exploitation of trade-off between stack oversizing and BoP weight savings.•Evaluation of PEMFC technological enhancements’ effects on system size.
Recently, hydrogen and fuel cells have gained interest as an emerging technology to mitigate the effects of climate change caused by the aviation sector. The aim of this work is to evaluate the applicability of this technology to an existing regional aircraft in order to assess its electrification, with the aim of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and achieving sustainability goals. The design of a proton-exchange membrane fuel cell system (PEMFC) with the inclusion of liquid hydrogen storage is carried out. Specifically, a general mathematical model is developed, which involves multiple scales, ranging from individual cells to aircraft scale. First, the fuel cell electrochemical model is developed and validated against published polarization curves. Then, different sizing approaches are used to compute the overall weight of the hydrogen-based propulsion system, in order to optimize the system and minimize its weight. Crucially, this work underscores that the feasibility of hydrogen-based fuel cell systems relies not only on hydrogen storage but especially on the electrochemical cell performance, which influences the size of the balance of plant and especially its thermal management section. In particular, the strategic significance of working with fuel cells at partial loads is demonstrated. This entails achieving an optimal balance between the stacks oversizing and the weights of both hydrogen storage and balance of plant, thereby minimizing the overall weight of the system. It is thus shown that an integrated approach is imperative to guide progress towards efficient and implementable hydrogen technology in regional aviation. Furthermore, a high-performance PEMFC is analyzed, resulting in an overall weight reduction up to nearly 10% compared to the baseline case study. In this way, it is demonstrated as technological advancements in PEMFCs can offer further prospects for improving system efficiency.
Gut microbiota (GM) comprises more than one thousand microorganisms between bacterial species, viruses, fungi, and protozoa and represents the main actor of a wide net of molecular interactions, ...involving, among others, the endocrine system, immune responses, and metabolism. GM influences many endocrine functions, such as adrenal steroidogenesis, thyroid function, sexual hormones, IGF-1 pathway and peptides, produced in the gastrointestinal system. It is fundamental in glycaemic control and obesity, while also exerting an important function in modulating the immune system and associated inflammatory disease. The result of this crosstalk in gut mucosa is the formation of the intestinal immunological niche. Visceral adipose tissue (VAT) produces about 600 different peptides and it is involved in lipid and glucose metabolism, and some immune reactions, through several adipokines. GM and VAT interact in a bidirectional fashion: while gut dysbiosis can modify VAT adipokines and hormone secretion, VAT hyperplasia modifies GM composition. Acquired or genetic factors leading to gut dysbiosis or increasing VAT (i.e., Western diet) induce a pro-inflammatory condition, which plays a pivotal role in the development of dysmetabolic and immunologic conditions, such as diabetes mellitus. Diabetes is associated with specific patterns of GM alterations, an abundance or reduction of GM species involved in controlling mucosal barrier status, glycaemic levels and exerting a pro- or anti-inflammatory activity. All these factors could explain the higher incidence of several inflammatory conditions in Western countries; furthermore, besides the specific alterations observed in diabetes, this paradigm could represent a common pathway acting in many metabolic conditions and could pave the way to new, interesting therapeutic approaches.
PURPOSEThe pandemic diffusion of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) has highlighted significant gender-related differences in disease severity. Despite several hypotheses being proposed, how the ...genetic background of COVID-19 patients might impact clinical outcomes remains largely unknown. METHODSWe collected blood samples from 192 COVID-19 patients (115 men, 77 women, mean age 67 ± 19 years) admitted between March and June 2020 at two different hospital centers in Italy, and determined the allelic distribution of nine Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs), located at the 3'Regulatory Region (3'RR)-1 in the immunoglobulin (Ig) heavy chain locus, including *1 and *2 alleles of polymorphic hs1.2 enhancer region. RESULTSIn COVID-19 patients, the genotyped SNPs exhibited strong Linkage Disequilibrium and produced 7 specific haplotypes, associated to different degrees of disease severity, including the occurrence of pneumonia. Additionally, the allele *2, which comprises a DNA binding site for the Estrogen receptor alpha (ERα) in the polymorphic enhancer hs1.2 of 3'RR-1, was significantly enriched in women with a less severe disease. CONCLUSIONSThese findings document genetic variants associated to individual clinical severity of COVID-19 disease. Most specifically, a novel genetic protective factor was identified that might explain the sex-related differences in immune response to Sars-COV-2 infection in humans.
Following mixed-methods sequential design and drawing on the message-audience congruence concept and homophily theory, across three studies in the UK, we examined the effect of gendered wording and ...endorser’s gender on the effectiveness of leaflets promoting walking. In Study 1, a mall-intercept study achieved 247 completed questionnaires. Results demonstrated that men and women indicated the highest behavioural intentions for communal wording presented by a male endorser. However, pairwise comparisons revealed that when the wording of the advert was agentic and the endorser was male, males indicated significantly higher scores of behavioural intentions compared with females. Attitude towards the ad for women was highest for communal wording/female endorser; for men it was for agentic wording/male endorser. In Study 2, consumers’ views towards the gendered content were explored in 20 semi-structured interviews. In study 3 we examined the impact of the respondent’s gender role identity on gendered content effectiveness. Overall, when controlled for level of gender role identity, only masculine males evaluated leaflets featuring communal wording negatively which suggests that wording matters only for masculine males, but not for other men and women. Theoretically, we identified that gender-based message-respondent congruence is not a necessary aspect of communications to be effective, except for one group: masculine males. Our study identified dominant gender role identity as a factor that explained respondents’ preferences for presented stimuli. Specifically, males who display masculine gender role identity differ in evaluations of communal wording from all other groups. Social and commercial marketers who target men and women with exercise-related services should consider the use of agentic wording endorsed by a male endorser when targeting masculine men to increase the likelihood of eliciting positive attitudes towards the communication. However, such distinctions should not be associated with differences in women’s evaluations or men who do not report masculine gender role identity.

Background
Regional lymph nodes are frequently sampled in cats with suspected intestinal lymphoma; however, their diagnostic value has not been explored.
Objectives
To investigate whether histologic ...and immunohistochemical analysis of mesenteric lymph nodes correlates with the diagnosis of intestinal lymphoma in cats.
Animals
One hundred 2 client‐owned cats diagnosed with intestinal lymphoma.
Methods
Retrospective study. The inclusion criteria required a full‐thickness biopsy of the small intestine and concurrent excision of mesenteric lymph nodes. Histologic and immunophenotypic analyses were performed on intestinal biopsies and corresponding lymph nodes. Selected nodal samples diagnosed with reactive lymph nodes underwent clonality testing.
Results
Transmural T‐cell lymphomas, encompassing small and large cell types, were predominant (64 cases, 62.7%), with large B‐cell lymphomas being more frequently transmural (68.8%) than mucosal (31.2%). Among all lymph nodes examined, 44 (43.1%; 95% CI: 33.9%‐52.8%) exhibited neoplastic infiltration. Among cases of small cell lymphoma, 51 out of 72 (70.8%; 95% CI: 59.4%‐80.1%) showed no nodal involvement. Clonality results correctly identified 19/30 (63.3%; 95% CI: 45.5%‐78.2%) reactive lymph nodes. Concerns were raised regarding clonal identification in the remaining cases and potential misdiagnoses based on phenotypic characteristics.
Conclusion and Clinical Importance
The study underscores the potential drawbacks of relying solely on mesenteric lymph nodes for diagnosing intestinal lymphomas in cats, particularly small cell subtypes. It emphasizes the importance of full‐thickness biopsies for assessing transmural infiltration and recommends caution when utilizing mesenteric lymph nodes for histologic, immunohistochemical and clonality evaluations in mucosal lymphomas. Despite limitations, this research highlights the need for comprehensive diagnostic strategies in cats with intestinal lymphoma.

Background: The recent COVID-19 pandemic produced a significant increase in cases and an emergency state was induced worldwide. The current knowledge about the COVID-19 disease concerning diagnoses, ...patient tracking, the treatment protocol, and vaccines provides a consistent contribution for the primary prevention of the viral infection and decreasing the severity of the SARS-CoV-2 disease. The aim of the present investigation was to produce a general overview about the current findings for the COVID-19 disease, SARS-CoV-2 interaction mechanisms with the host, therapies and vaccines’ immunization findings. Methods: A literature overview was produced in order to evaluate the state-of-art in SARS-CoV-2 diagnoses, prognoses, therapies, and prevention. Results: Concerning to the interaction mechanisms with the host, the virus binds to target with its Spike proteins on its surface and uses it as an anchor. The Spike protein targets the ACE2 cell receptor and enters into the cells by using a special enzyme (TMPRSS2). Once the virion is quietly accommodated, it releases its RNA. Proteins and RNA are used in the Golgi apparatus to produce more viruses that are released. Concerning the therapies, different protocols have been developed in observance of the disease severity and comorbidity with a consistent reduction in the mortality rate. Currently, different vaccines are currently in phase IV but a remarkable difference in efficiency has been detected concerning the more recent SARS-CoV-2 variants. Conclusions: Among the many questions in this pandemic state, the one that recurs most is knowing why some people become more seriously ill than others who instead contract the infection as if it was a trivial flu. More studies are necessary to investigate the efficiency of the treatment protocols and vaccines for the more recent detected SARS-CoV-2 variant.
The gold standard of care for pancreatic adenocarcinoma is the integrated treatment of surgery and chemotherapy (ChT), but about 50% of patients present with unresectable disease. Our study evaluated ...the efficacy in terms of local control, survival and safety of stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) in locally advanced pancreatic cancer (LAPC).
A retrospective study (STEP study) analyzed patients with LAPC treated with a dose of 45 Gy in 6 fractions. Local control (LC), distant progression free survival (DPFS), overall survival (OS) and toxicity were analyzed according to the Kaplan-Meier method.
A total of 142 patients were evaluated. Seventy-six patients (53.5%) received induction ChT before SBRT. The median follow-up was 11 months. One-, 2- and 3-year LC rate was 81.9%, 69.1% and 58.5%. Median DPFS was 6.03 months; 1- and 2-year DPFS rate was 19.9% and 4.5%. Median OS was 11.6 months and 1-, 2- and 3-year OS rates were 45.4%, 16.1%, and 9.8%. At univariate analysis, performed by the log-rank test, age < 70 years (
= 0.037), pre-SBRT ChT (
= 0.004) and post-SBRT ChT (
= 0.019) were associated with better OS. No patients experienced G3 toxicity.
SBRT represents an effective and safe therapeutic option in the multimodal treatment of patients with LAPC in terms of increased LC. When SBRT was sequentially integrated with ChT, the treatment proved to be promising in terms of OS as well.
To investigate whether radiotherapy as metastasis-directed therapy (MDT) on oligo-progressive sites in metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC) patients during treatment with androgen ...receptor-targeted therapy (ARTT) may lead to control resistant lesions, prolonging ARTT. We analysed progression free survival, overall survival and prognostic parameters that can identify patients that best suit to this approach.
Retrospective analysis of a total of 67 lesions in 42 mCRPC patients treated with ablative or palliative RT to oligoprogressive lesions during ARTT. Twenty-eight patients (67%) underwent ARTT with Abiraterone acetate and 14 patients (33%) underwent ARTT with Enzalutamide. Median time between the start of ADT and ARTT beginning was 50.14 months (range 3.37-219 months). We treated 58 lesions (87%) with 3D conformal radiotherapy (3DCRT) and nine lesions (13%) with stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT). The Kaplan Meier method was used to assess the median overall survival (OS) and the progression-free survival (PFS).
Median follow-up was 28 months (range 3-82 months). Median OS was 32.5 months (95% CI 25.77-39.16), 1 and 2-year OS were 71.6% and 64.1%, respectively. Median PFS was 19,8 months (95% CI 11.34-28.31), 1 and 2-year PFS were 67.2% and 47.4%, respectively. Median OS for patients that underwent radiotherapy before 6 months from the start of ARTT was 23.4 months (95% CI 2.04-44.89) and 45.5 months (95% CI 31.19-59.8) for patients that underwent radiotherapy after 6 months (
).
Local ablative radiation therapy directed to progressive metastasis is a non-invasive, well tolerated treatment with efficacy on prolonging clinical benefit of systemic therapies with ARTT. Patients who underwent RT >6 months from the start of ARTT presented a statistically better OS and PFS compared with patients who underwent radiotherapy <6 months from the start of ARTT.
