The epicardial adipose tissue (EAT) is the visceral fat located between the myocardium and the pericardium. We aimed to perform a longitudinal evaluation of the epicardial adipose tissue using an ...advanced computer-assisted approach in a population of patients undergoing Cardiac CT (CCT) during statin administration, in relation to their body mass index (BMI). We retrospectively enrolled 95 patients mean age 62 ± 10 years; 68 males (72%) and 27 females (28%) undergoing CCT for suspected coronary artery disease during statin administration. CCT was performed at two subsequent time points. At the second CCT, EAT showed a mean density increase (−75.59 ± 7.0 HU vs. −78.18 ± 5.3 HU, p < 0.001) and a volume decrease (130 ± 54.3 cm3 vs.142.79 ± 56.9 cm3, p < 0.001). Concerning coronary artery EAT thickness, a reduction was found at the origin of the right coronary artery (13.26 ± 5.2 mm vs. 14.94 ± 5.8, p = 0.001) and interventricular artery (8.22 ± 3.7 mm vs. 9.13 ± 3.9 mm, p = 0.001). The quartile (Q) attenuation percentage (%) distribution of EAT changed at the second CCT. The EAT % distribution changed by the BMI in Q1 (p = 0.015), Q3 (p = 0.001) and Q4 (p = 0.043) at the second CCT, but the normal-BMI and overweight/obese patients showed a similar response to statin therapy in terms of quartile distribution changes. In conclusion, statins may determine significant changes in EAT quantitative and qualitative characteristics detected by CCT; the BMI influences the EAT composition, but statins determine a similar response in quartile distribution’s variation, irrespective of the BMI.
Intermittent photic stimulation (IPS) is a useful technique in electroencephalography (EEG) to investigate the neurophysiological anomalies of brain activity. Although not an active task, IPS has ...also been explored in ASD; it is thought to capture local potential oscillators at specific frequencies and perhaps tap into rhythmic activity in a way that general resting-state recordings cannot. Previous studies suggest that individuals with ASD showed photic driving reactivity predominantly at lower frequencies of stimulation. In our study we used IPS to measure rhythmic oscillatory activity in a sample of 81 ASD children. We found a significant correlation linking ASD children with photic driving activation only at low frequencies (δθ band) and increased severity of “restricted behavior”. This suggests that ASD children with higher severity of restricted behaviors could have a hypersynchronous θ power and an impaired resonance synchronization at middle-ranged frequencies (α). Furthermore, we found some evidence of hemispherical oscillatory asymmetry linked particularly to behavioral impairments. This result is in line with the EEG pattern model indicating a “U-shaped profile” of electrophysiological power alterations with excess power in low- and high-frequency bands and a reduction of power in the middle-ranged frequencies. IPS technique in electroencephalography is confirmed to reveal EEG biomarkers in autistic children, with a focus on spectral power, coherence, and hemisphere asymmetries.
While bivalent and quadrivalent HPV vaccines have been used for about 10 years, a nonavalent vaccine against HPV types 6/11/16/18/31/33/45/52 and 58 has been recently approved by FDA and EMA and is ...now commercially available. The objective of our study was to evaluate the potential impact of the nonavalent vaccine on HPV infection and related low- and high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (LSIL, HSIL), compared to the impact of the quadrivalent vaccine, in a female population living in Sicily (Italy).
Low estimates of HPV vaccine impact were calculated as prevalence of HPV 6/11/16/18/31/33/45/52 and 58 genotypes, alone or in association, but excluding presence of other HPV types; high estimates were calculated as prevalence of HPV 6/11/16/18/31/33/45/52 and 58 genotypes alone or in association, in the presence of other HPV types.
The nonavalent HPV vaccine showed increased impact, compared to the quadrivalent vaccine. Estimates of potential impact varied from 30.9% (low estimate) to 53.3% (high estimate) for LSIL, and from 56.9% to 81,0% for HSIL. The proportion of additional cases potentially prevented by the nonavalent vaccine was 14.4%-23.8% for LSIL, and 19.0%-32.8% for HSIL.
The benefit of the nonavalent vaccine compared to the quadrivalent vaccine was more than 80% for both low and high impact estimates for LSIL and more than 50% for both low and high impact estimates for HSIL.
The present study confirms that the switch from a first generation HPV vaccines to a nonavalent vaccine would increase the prevention of cervical HSIL in up to 90% of cases.
We aimed to qualitatively and quantitatively compare the enhancement pattern of focal nodular hyperplasia after gadobenate dimeglumine and gadoxetate disodium injection in the same patient.
1.5 T ...magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examinations of 16 patients with 21 focal nodular hyperplasias studied after the injection of both contrast media were evaluated. Both MRI studies were performed in all patients. A qualitative analysis was performed evaluating each lesion in all phases. For quantitative analysis we calculated signal intensity ratio, lesion-to-liver contrast ratio and liver parenchyma signal intensity gain on hepatobiliary phase. Statistical analysis was performed with the Wilcoxon sign-rank test for clustered paired data and the McNemar test for paired frequencies. A P value < 0.05 was considered statistically significant.
At qualitative analysis no statistically significant differences were evident during any of the contrast-enhanced phases. Signal intensity ratio (P = 0.048), lesion-to-liver contrast ratio (P = 0.032) and liver parenchyma signal intensity gain (P = 0.012) were significantly higher on hepatobiliary phase after gadoxetate disodium injection.
There were no significant differences in the MRI findings of focal nodular hyperplasia after the injection of a weight-based dose of either gadobenate dimeglumine or gadoxetate disodium.
Infection with oncogenic human papilloma virus (HPV) types is a necessary cause of cervical cancer. This study assessed the
prevalence of HPV infection and genotypes among 1,006 randomly selected ...women, ages 18 to 24 years, living in Sicily (south
Italy). The overall HPV rate was 24.1% (95% confidence interval, 21.5-26.9). The most frequent types were HPV-16 (4.5%), HPV-53
(2.7%), and HPV-84 (2.6%). The prevalence of vaccine types HPV-6, HPV-11, and HPV-18 was 1.4%, 0.1%, and 1.3%, respectively.
Cytologic abnormalities were uncommon (3.1%) and associated with HPV detection ( P < 0.0001). The only risk factor for HPV infection was the number of sexual partners (women with 2-3 partners versus women
with 1 partner: odds ratio, 3.86; 95% confidence interval, 2.45-6.09). Genital HPV infection is relatively high in young Italian
women. The high prevalence of viral types other than vaccine types should be taken into account to ensure accurate postvaccine

Desquamative Gingivitis (DG) comprises heterogeneous clinical manifestations of numerous immune-mediated muco-cutaneous diseases. Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) has been proposed as a valuable ...diagnostic support even if, to date, there are no standardized OCT-diagnostic patterns applicable to DGs. A systematic review was performed to detect existing data on in vivo OCT diagnostic patterns of the most common immune-mediated DGs (i.e., pemphigus vulgaris, mucous membrane pemphigoid and oral lichen planus). It has been found that OCT exhibits specific patterns that address the diagnosis of DG by pemphigus vulgaris (i.e., intraepithelial unilocular blister, reduced epithelial thickness, presence of acantholytic cells in the blister) and by mucous membrane pemphigoid (i.e., subepithelial multilocular blister, presence of inflammatory infiltrate), but not by oral lichen planus. These patterns could offer an attractive diagnostic OCT framework to support the clinical preliminary assessment and monitoring of these complex pathological conditions.

Importantly, two craniofacial markers were significantly correlated with autism severity: increased orbital hyperthelorism and decrease of height of the facial midline. These data support previous findings of craniofacial anomalies in autism spectrum disorder suggesting an "ASD facial phenotype" that could be used to improve ASD diagnoses.
Background
Several experiences in the literature report SBRT as an effective treatment option for medically inoperable early stage non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and oligometastatic disease. The ...optimal fractionation schedules and total dose remain controversial. In this study, we evaluated the safety in terms of toxicity and efficacy of using of 8–10 fractions schedules with Helical Tomotherapy (HT) for primary and metastatic lung lesions.
Methods
Between March 2014 and May 2016, a total of 39 patients (median age 72 years, range 26–91) were treated with HT-SBRT for malignant lung lesions: 22 patients with early stage NSCLC, 17 with oligometastases. Patients received 8–10 fractions with lower daily dose for central and ultracentral lesions. Treatment-related toxicity was evaluated using CTCAE v 4.0 scale. Local control (LC), overall survival (OS) and toxicity rates were prospectively collected.
Results
Median duration of RT was 15 days (range 10–26 days) and no interruption occurred. With a median follow-up of 13 months (range 3–29), we reported one G2 pneumonitis (2.6%) and one G2 chest pain (2.6%); no ≥ G2 esophagitis was registered. Actuarial local control rate was 95.5% both at 12 and 24 months for early stage NSCLC and 92.9% both at 12 and 24 months for metastatic patients. OS rate was 94.4 and 92.3% at 1 year, and 94.4 and 83.9% at 2 years in primary and metastatic group, respectively.
Conclusions
The use of 8–10 fractions schedule HT-SBRT for lung malignancies results in high LC and OS rates with minimal toxicities reported.
Objective The aim of this study was to introduce the VaccinaTion & Hpv Knowledge (THinK) questionnaire to assess knowledge about human papillomavirus (HPV) and attitude to HPV-vaccination. Its ...reliability and validity was demonstrated in a sample of women living in Sicily (southern Italy). Methods A cross-sectional survey was conducted on a sample of 220 women at the “Paolo Giaccone” University Hospital in Palermo (Sicily), aged 18–61. Data were analyzed through Cronbach’s alpha and exploratory factor analysis, followed by a structural equation model with measurement component. The two-level data structure was explicitly considered. Results Three dimensions were found: “knowledge of HPV infection (kHPV), “Attitude to be vaccinated against HPV (aHPV)” and “Knowledge about vaccines (KV)” (97% overall explained variance). Internal consistency was good for the whole questionnaire (0.82) and the first dimension (0.88) and acceptable for the second (0.78) and the third dimension (0.73). 23% of women showed no or little knowledge of HPV and 44.3% of women had no or little knowledge about HPV induced lesions. Discussion The use of a validated questionnaire may serve as a useful measure to assess general knowledge about HPV and attitude towards vaccination against HPV in the primary prevention setting.
Abstract
Background
The scope of this work was to investigate socioeconomic inequalities among European adults aged 50 or older in chronic diseases and behavioural risk factors for these diseases, ...namely, smoking habits, obesity and physical inactivity, between 2004 and 2015.
Methods
Data for this study were drawn from the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement (SHARE) in Europe, which is a panel database of microdata on health, socioeconomic status and social and family networks of people aged 50 years or older, covering most of the European Union. The predicted number of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) was used to estimate the concentration index and to find the contributions of determinants to socioeconomic inequalities in chronic diseases.
Results
The inequality disfavoured the poor in both years, but the effect was stable from 2004 (C = −0.071) to 2015 (C = −0.081). Inequality was shown to be attributed mostly to physical inactivity and obesity and this contribution increased during the study period. Among socioeconomic status (SES) determinants, education and marital status were the most concentrated in both years, while physical inactivity and obesity were the most concentrated behavioural risk factors in both years.
Conclusions
To prevent chronic diseases, health policy should aim not only to improve individual health behaviours in the population, but also to reduce socioeconomic inequality. Our study suggests promoting a healthy lifestyle in the most disadvantaged socioeconomic classes as a strategy to improve the health conditions of the whole population.
