The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of overweight, obesity and underweight in children from Ukraine. A cross-sectional study was performed on data collected from a representative ...sample of Ukraine children (13,739 children (boys 48%, girls 52%) aged 6.0-18.9 years). The measurement of body weight was performed with medical scales and height was measured using a stadiometer. Based on the results obtained, body mass index (BMI) was calculated. Three criteria were used to define childhood underweight, overweight and obesity: The International Obesity Task Force (IOTF) reference, World Health Organization (WHO) child growth standard and The US Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The combined prevalence of obesity and overweight among children aged 6-18 years old was 12.1%, 17.6%, and 12.6% based on the IOTF reference, WHO growth standard, and the CDC, respectively. Obesity was 2.1%, 4.2%, and 3.6% respectively. Significantly more girls were underweight than boys. Furthermore, a higher prevalence of overweight and obesity was diagnosed in younger that older Ukrainian population.
Waste fly ash, with both low (with the addition of vermiculite) and high contents of unburned coal, were subjected to hydrothermal syntheses aiming to obtain zeolite composite materials-zeolite + ...vermiculite (NaX-Ver) and zeolite + unburned carbon (NaX-C). The composites were compared with parent zeolite obtained from waste fly ash with a low content of unburned carbon (NaX-FA). In this study, the physicochemical characteristics of the obtained materials were evaluated. The potential application of the investigated zeolites for the adsorption of ammonium ions from aqueous solutions was determined. , respectively. The nearly 2-fold lower adsorption capacity of composite NaX-C (21.05 mg (NH

) was probably a result of the lower availability of ion exchange sites within the material. Adsorbents were also regenerated using 1 M NaCl solution at a pH of 10 and subjected to 3 cycles of adsorption-desorption experiments, which proved only a small reduction in adsorption properties. This study follows the current trend of waste utilization (fly ash) and the removal of pollutants from aqueous solutions with respect to their reuse, which remains in line with the goals of the circular economy.
ObjectiveThe lack of a widely accepted questionnaire used to assess the physical activity (PA) of adolescents in the Polish language creates a need to introduce such a valid, reliable, inexpensive ...and quick tool for assessment. This study was designed to culturally adapt and validate the Physical Activity Questionnaires for Adolescents (PAQ-A) in the Polish language.DesignCross-sectional study.Participants and outcome measuresCultural adaptation of the Polish version of the PAQ-A was performed following the standardised questionnaires cultural adaptation process. In a sample of 78 adolescents aged 14–19 years, the PAQ-A test–retest was administered within a 1-week interval. Reliability was analysed by the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and internal consistency with Cronbach’s α. Participants completed the PAQ-A, and wore an accelerometer for 7 consecutive days. The PAQ-A was compared with PA parameters obtained using the accelerometer.ResultsTest–retest reliability showed ICC=0.97 for the total score of PAQ-A. Internal consistency was excellent (α=0.93). The PAQ-A was very strongly correlated with steps per day (r=0.94) and with moderate-to-vigorous PA (r=0.81) assessed by the accelerometer.ConclusionsThe Polish version of the PAQ-A is a valuable tool to estimate general levels of PA among adolescents from 14 to 19 years old.
Background: The prevalence of abdominal obesity (AO) is high in individuals with intellectual disability (ID). The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of hypertension (HPT) in students ...with ID with different distributions of adipose tissue.
Method: Study involved 568 participants with ID. AO was assessed on the basis of waist circumference (WC) measurements.
Results: The risk of HPT was more than threefold higher in individuals with AO (OR = 3.38) than in the subjects with normal WC. Correlation between the prevalence of AO and HPT was observed in girls and individuals with mild levels of ID (OR = 6.07 and 7.67 respectively). The prevalence of HPT increases sharply in girls whose WC is greater than or equal to the 90 percentile, and in boys when it exceeds the 75th percentile.
Conclusion: An association between WC and HPT was observed in abdominally obese students with ID.

Hypertension and dyslipidemia are major risk factors for cardiovascular disease. Studies on the association between abnormal levels of lipids and hypertension have yielded inconsistent results. The ...aim of this study was to examine the prevalence of hypertension and dyslipidemia and its risk factors in young Polish adults. Furthermore, the association between plasma lipid levels and the risk of hypertension was determined. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 115 volunteer participants. Blood pressure was measured using an automated oscillometric sphygmomanometer. Blood lipids were analyzed from a fasting blood sample received by finger prick. Body fat percentage was assessed using a bioelectrical impedance analysis device. Socioeconomic and lifestyle factors (age, date of birth, place of residence, screen time, and tobacco use) were self-reported by the participant. The prevalence of hypertension was higher in men than in women (61.5 vs. 21.3%). The prevalence of elevated TC, TG, high LDL, and low HDL was 22.6%, 7.8%, 38.3%, and 13.9%, respectively. Spending more than 2 h daily in front of a computer was identified as a significant predictor of hypertension and elevated TG levels (p < 0.05). A high number of cigarettes smoked daily was a significant risk factor for hypertension (p = 0.047). Hypertension contributed to a higher risk of abnormal values of TC (OR = 5.89), LDL (OR = 5.38), and TG (OR = 9.75). Participants with hypertension were more likely than normotensive subjects to have elevated levels of TC, LDL, and TG. The prevalence of hypertension was significantly higher in young men than in women. BMI was associated with the prevalence of hypertension and elevated TC levels. Spending more than 2 h per day in front of a computer contributed to the prevalence of hypertension and elevated TG levels. Participants with hypertension smoked a higher number of cigarettes daily compared to those with normotension.
Proper nutrition may help in preventing deaths or at least alleviating the symptoms of many chronic diseases. While the COVID-19 disease was still taking its toll, the world had to adjust to new life ...conditions, which could change nutritional habits. In this observational, cross-sectional study, we aimed to identify the potential correlations between sociodemographic factors and diet and the presence of common chronic diseases among Polish inhabitants. Furthermore, we tried to determine whether the COVID-19 pandemic led to changes in nutritional habits. Therefore, based on the online study (the National Test for Poles’ Health (NTPH), we collected data from 376,102 and 200,000 respondents in two different time frames (before the COVID-19 pandemic: 2019–2020 and during the COVID-19 pandemic: 2021–2022, respectively). Despite the rapid global rise of the COVID-19 pandemic, among our study group, hypertension was still the most commonly occurring disease in both time frames (32.33% in 2019–2020 and 34.95% in 2021–2022, p < 0.001). Furthermore, more chronic diseases were reported during the COVID-19 pandemic than in 2019–2020. Regarding sociodemographic factors, male respondents were more likely to develop hypertension and diabetes (OR = 1.35 CI 95% (1.28–1.43), p < 0.001; and OR = 1.20 CI 95% (1.11–1.30), p < 0.001). Vegetarian diet decreases the likelihood of hypertension, neurological disease, and diabetes (OR = 0.69, CI 95% (0.60–0.81), p < 0.001; OR = 0.72, CI 95% (0.59–0.88), p = 0.001; and OR = 0.73, CI 95% (0.55–0.96), p = 0.026). In line with this, consuming meat meals increases the risk of hypertension (OR = 1.09, CI 95% (1.02–1.17), p = 0.009). Interestingly, a reduced-sodium diet has an association with decreased morbidity of COVID-19 disease (OR = 0.72, CI 95% (0.63–0.82), p < 0.001). This result brings new light to more research to be done to allow efficient prevention of this disease. In conclusion, our study shows the beneficial role of a balanced diet in reducing the incidence rate of common chronic diseases. Our findings may be educational for those who would like to change their nutritional habits and/or for public health professionals to suggest the implementation of proper diets to their patients.
The cyanobacterial response to pharmaceuticals is less frequently investigated compared to green algae. Pharmaceuticals can influence not only the growth rate of cyanobacteria culture, but can also ...cause changes at the cellular level. The effect of diclofenac (DCF) as one of the for cyanobacteria has been rarely tested, and DCF has never been applied with cellular biomarkers. The aim of this work was to test the response of two unicellular cyanobacteria (Synechocystis salina and Microcystis aeruginosa) toward DCF (100 mg L−1) under photoautotrophic growth conditions. Such endpoints were analyzed as cells number, DCF uptake, the change in concentrations of photosynthetic pigments, the production of toxins, and chlorophyll a in vivo fluorescence. It was noted that during a 96 h exposure, cell proliferation was not impacted. Nevertheless, a biochemical response was observed. The increased production of microcystin was noted for M. aeruginosa. Due to the negligible absorption of DCF into cells, it is possible that the biochemical changes are induced by an external signal. The application of non-standard biomarkers demonstrates the effect of DCF on microorganism metabolism without a corresponding effect on biomass. The high resistance of cyanobacteria to DCF and the stimulating effect of DCF on the secretion of toxins raise concerns for environment biodiversity.

Assessment of sedentary behaviors in children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes (T1D), relative to the method of insulin therapy used, and in comparison to healthy controls.The study group ...consisted of 215 children with T1D, including 109 (50.7%) insulin pen and 106 (49.3%) insulqsain pump users. The control group comprised 115 healthy children. The subjects' sedentary time was measured with a tri-axial accelerometer ActiGraph GT3X+, used continuously for 7 days.The diabetes group was characterized by a significantly higher "% in sedentary time" score (P = .024) and a lower "mean daily breaks in sedentary time" result (P = .007), which means that they spent much more time on sedentary activities compared to the control group. There were no significant differences between the children using insulin pump and insulin pen in the "% in sedentary time" score (P = .294) and "mean daily breaks in sedentary time" (P = .251).The T1D is a serious encumbrance, leading to longer duration of sedentary time, in comparison to healthy controls. The type of insulin therapy did not significantly affect the percentage of the wear-day spent in sedentary time and mean daily breaks in sedentary time.
BACKGROUND We assessed the relationship between body mass index and results of rehabilitation in stroke patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS The study was carried out at the Clinical Rehabilitation Ward ...with Early Neurological Rehabilitation Unit at the Clinical Hospital. The examinations were performed 3 times. Based on inclusion and exclusion criteria, 128 subjects were qualified for the first examination, the second examination involved 114 subjects, and 100 stroke patients participated in the third examination. Body mass was examined with an accuracy of 0.1 kg, using a Tanita MC-780 MA body composition analyser. Body mass index (BMI) was calculated for all of the subjects. Effects of rehabilitation were assessed with the Barthel index and Ashworth scale. RESULTS Higher functional status in daily life, measured with the Barthel scale, was found in patients with normal body mass, compared to the overweight and obese subjects (examination I, II, and II). Exam I showed that before rehabilitation the overweight patients obtained significantly higher results in assessment of upper limbs, based on the Ashworth scale (mean=0.35±0.54) compared to the obese patients (mean=0.03±0.32) and those with normal body weight (mean=0.24±0.75). CONCLUSIONS Following hospital-based rehabilitation, patients with normal body mass achieved greater functional efficiency. The findings also show a trend towards normalization of BMI. The positive effect of rehabilitation was sustained for 3 months (Exam III), which may contribute to decreased risk of cardiovascular diseases and complications such as stroke.

The adsorption of gases in nanopores represents a promising engineering tool applicable for gas storage and separation. This study provides a comprehensive evaluation of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) for biogas purification, with a specific focus on their performance under humid conditions. Beginning with 22 structures identified in the literature as potential top sorbents, we employ numerical simulations of adsorption and kinetic selectivity to identify the best-performing MOFs. The research reveals that the presence of water significantly impacts the biogas separation process due to water clustering, which notably affects CO2 adsorption. The simulations also indicate variations in regenerability and selective adsorption among the initially selected MOFs in wet conditions. These findings underscore the effectiveness of high-throughput numerical screening in identifying materials with specific properties and ensuring stable performance under varying environmental conditions.
