Located on the Snake River between Oregon and Idaho, Hells Canyon is the deepest canyon in North America. Finding elk in Hells Canyon is not the hard part.

The cool thing about them is that they come in later than Chinooks and fewer people go after them. The best coho spots (and unfortunately those most subject to closure) are the rivers and bays from ...the Columbia River south. Nehalem, Tillamook, Alsea and Coos bays in Oregon all are good when they open. These are troll fisheries. You don't need downriggers, but they help, even though cohos stay very close to the surface. In Washington, the two best are Neah Bay in August and the San Juan Islands in September. But the biggest secret is the triangle in Area 9 formed by Possession Bar, Point No Point and Jefferson Head in the central Puget Sound, within sight of Seattle's high-rises. You can find lists of where they are by contacting the regional state offices. I have known lots of road-hunters and have disparaged most. But you know what? That's how you find grouse. Like other birds, grouse pick gravel, usually in mid-morning and usually in roads. When you find grouse in the road, look at the land. You'll find yourself in a gully. That gully is a grouse road and it is your signal to get off the gravel and start hiking. Oregon's Deschutes River has numerous regulations that anglers find prohibitive. The regulations are the product of wrangling by guides, rafters, biologists, environmental groups and Indian tribes.
