It examines how we can move beyond a profit-first approach to governance, into a framework that prioritises human dignity in all aspects of an operation. McMahon explores the nineteenth-century roots of this transnational identity. Between 1840 and 1880, 4.5 million people left Ireland to start new lives abroad. Using primary sources from Ireland, Australia, and the United States, McMahon demonstrates how this exodus shaped a distinctive sense of nationalism. By doggedly remaining loyal to both their old and new homes, he argues, the Irish helped broaden the modern parameters of citizenship and identity. From insurrection in Ireland to exile in Australia to military service during the American Civil War, McMahon's narrative revolves around a group of rebels known as Young Ireland. They and their fellow Irish used weekly newspapers to construct and express an international identity tailored to the fluctuating world in which they found themselves. Understanding their experience sheds light on our contemporary debates over immigration, race, and globalization.
Abstract
This paper critically evaluates the liberal-humanist critique of neoclassical microeconomics and shareholder-driven corporate governance to articulate a more realistic cooperativist–humanist ...organisational philosophy of practice. Through an engagement with pluralist heterodox economics, it attempts to reconcile with contemporary concerns and philosophical developments around social ecology and care ethics. Our specific contribution is to develop a microfoundational complement to the macro-relational analysis of leading radical philosophical and political-economic thinkers on the Latin American left. In particular, the worker-inclusive multistakeholder cooperative (MSC) form is arrived at as the ideal firm-level organisation through which to promote diverse human (and non-human) dignity, understood through the lens of an affective-relational ethics of care.
The author traces the growth and decline of whiteness studies over the past two and a half decades, from the publication of David Roediger’s The Wages of Whiteness in the early 1990s to the present ...day. Although it accurately identified race as a social construct in modern society, ‘whiteness’ also employed over-simplifications that ultimately undermined its critical relevance. Nonetheless, the author demonstrates how the colourful career of ‘whiteness’ as a scholarly concept can inform contemporary debates over immigration and identity.
Simian, violent, and thuggish: the Irishman as subject of political cartoons is an oft-traversed path in the historiography of American immigration. A regular fixture in periodicals such as Harper's ...Weekly, Puck, and Judge, the politicized, ape-like Irish Celt was a menace to respectable society. His jutting jaw, sloping forehead, and simous nose reflected middle-class distrust of Irish American political power in the years following the Civil War. Thomas Nast's "The Ignorant Vote: Honors Are Easy" is a case in point. Published in Harper's Weekly in Dec 1876, the cartoon's depiction of a black sharecropper and a brutish Paddy sifting on weighing scales expressed fear over the prospect of recently emancipated slaves and ignorant Irish immigrants holding the balance of power in American politics. By simianizing the Irish Catholic immigrant's features, artists such as Nast sought to undermine his political legitimacy. Here, Mcmahon examines three themes relating to transnational Irish understandings of race and nation.
