It is a fact that a very low proportion of practising teachers are in the habit of reading ELT-related research papers. The main cause of this neglect is assumed to be that teaching and researching ...are two distinct forms of activity with no links to connect them. After comparing the concepts of progress and change in research versus teaching, this article discusses the issue of relevance encapsulated in the question: "Who needs whom?" Whereas it is a matter of utmost importance for researchers to reach out to teachers, the opposite does not apply: teachers can do well without outsiders' intervention. It is time, therefore, to accord more prominence to the "teacher-inquirer," who is a professional capable of analysing their work on their own and exchanging their knowledge and experience with fellow teachers.
In the past quarter century, Hungary has offered fertile ground for innovative developments in foreign language (FL) education. The appropriate, albeit disparaging, label applied to Hungary in the ...mid-1970s – ‘a land of foreign language illiterates’ (Köllő 1978: 6) – no longer applies. In the wake of the dramatic changes of 1989, the number of FL speakers rose quite rapidly. As a beneficial side-effect, applied linguistic and language education research, areas which used to be relegated to the lowest rung of the academic ladder, began to be recognised as legitimate fields of scientific inquiry, offering young researchers the opportunity to embark on an academic career. As a result, Hungarian authors are now regular contributors to distinguished journals, and researchers from Hungary are welcome speakers at international conferences. However, Hungarian authors often choose to publish their research studies in local journals and volumes which are not easily accessible to the international research community, especially if written in Hungarian. The aim of this review, therefore, is to give an overview of such studies to demonstrate the breadth and depth of recent research conducted in Hungary.
Tanulmányom az angol nyelv és a globalizáció összefüggéseit boncolgatja, kiemelve, hogy az angol világnyelvi primátusát az angol anyanyelvű államok, mindenekelőtt az Egyesült Államok gazdasági és ...politikai ereje alapozta meg. Ennek ára azonban az, hogy az anyanyelvű beszélők ma már nem egyedüli birtokosai a nyelvnek, nem ők határozzák meg a beszédhasználati szabályokat. A kommunikáció sikere a pragmatikai hatékonyságon múlik, amit a beszélők rendelkezésére álló nyelvek váltogatásával is el lehet érni. Ez az új szemlélet a nyelvoktatás módszertanára is jelentős hatással lehet a jövőben. Külön fejezetben tárgyalom az idegennyelv-oktatás magyarországi helyzetét, végül felvázolom az angol jövőjével kapcsolatos forgatókönyveket, a többnyelvűség irányába ható tényezőket.

This paper is concerned with the relationship between the English language and globalization, stressing that the primacy of English has been established by the economic and political power of native ...English-speaking countries, especially that of the United States. However, the price of this development is that the native speakers of English are no longer the sole owners of the language who determine how to use it. The success of communication depends on pragmatic effectiveness, which can well be achieved by alternating the languages available to the speaker. This new approach may have a significant influence on language teaching methods. After a discussion of the state of foreign language education in Hungary, the paper ends by describing the possible scenarios concerning the future of English, as well as the factors leading to multilingualism.

Tanulmányomban a magyarországi angolnyelvoktatás fejlődését követem nyomon a 19. század utolsó harmadától napjainkig. Bemutatom, hogy a fontossági sorrendben egykor szerényen meghúzódó angol, némi ...lemaradással követve a világtrendet, hogyan vált a magyar közoktatásban úgyszólván egyeduralkodó idegen nyelvvé. Noha figyelmem fókuszában az általános iskolai nyelvoktatásban lejátszódó folyamatok állnak, kitérek az iskoláskor előtti, a középiskolai és nyelviskolai oktatás helyzetére, valamint a módszerek változó világára és az olykor fellángoló szakértői vitákra is. Kritikai elemzésnek vetem alá az angoltanárképzés és -továbbképzés rendszerét, a magyar szerzők legismertebb tananyagait, rávilágítva angoltanítási rendszerünk gyöngeségeinek, sok angoltanár kiégettségének és pályaelhagyásának okaira. A tényanyagot a saját tanári, nyelvkönyvírói és minisztériumi munkám során szerzett tapasztalataimmal, emlékeimmel egészítem ki, abban a reményben, hogy a szöveg így érthetőbbé és emészthetőbbé válik.
