S abundances surpassing those of HC
5
N toward the dark cloud L1251, using the Effelsberg telescope at the
K
band ...(18–26 GHz). L1251-1 and L1251-3 are identified as the most promising SCCC sources. The two sources harbor young stellar objects. We conducted mapping observations toward L1251-A, the western tail of L1251, at

∼ 3 mm with the Purple Mountain Observatory 13.7 m and the Nobeyama Radio Observatory 45 m telescopes in lines of C

, CS, HCO

N, and C

O as well as in CO 3–2 using the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT). The spectral data were combined with archival data including Spitzer and Herschel continuum maps for further analysis. Filamentary substructures labeled as F1–F6 were extracted in L1251, with F1 being associated with L1251-A hosting L1251-1. The peak positions of dense gas traced by HCO
+
are misaligned relative to those of the dust clumps. Episodic outflows are common in this region. The twisted morphology of F1 and velocity distribution along L1251-A may originate from stellar feedback. SCCC in L1251-1 may have been caused by outflow activities originated from the infrared source IRS1. The signposts of ongoing SCCC and the broadened line widths of C
3
S and C
4
H in L1251-1 as well as the distribution of HC
3
N are also related to outflow activities in this region. L1251-1 (IRS1) together with the previously identified SCCC source IRS3 demonstrate that L1251-A is an excellent region to study SCCC.
Abstract Diabetes mellitus (DM) adversely affects the number and function of circulating endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs). Consequently, there is also a reduction in the repair mechanism of these ...cells, which is a critical and initiating factor in the development of diabetic vascular disease. The aim of the present study was to analyze miR expression profiles in EPCs from patients with DM and choose the most significantly regulated miR to study its possible role on EPC dysfunction and elucidate its mechanism of action. EPCs were collected from subjects with Type II DM and non-diabetic control subjects. Total RNA was harvested from EPCs, and a total of 5 candidate miRNAs were identified by microarray screening and were quantified by TaqMan real-time PCR. Lentiviral vectors expressing miR-126 and miR-126 inhibitor (anti-miR-126) were transfected into EPCs, and the EPC colony-forming capacity, proliferation activity, migratory activity, differentiation capacity, and apoptotic susceptibility were determined and Western Blotting and mRNA real-time PCR analyses were performed. To study the mechanisms, lentiviral vectors expressing Spred-1 and a short interfering RNA (siRNA) targeting Spred-1 were prepared. Five miRs were aberrantly downregulated in EPCs from DM patients. These miRs included miR-126, miR-21, miR-27a, miR-27b and miR-130a. Anti-miR-126 inhibited EPC proliferation, migration, and enhanced apoptosis. Restored miR-126 expression in EPCs from DM promoted EPC proliferation, migration, and inhibited EPC apoptosis ability. Despite this, miR-126 had no effect on EPC differentiation. miR-126 overexpression significantly downregulated Spred-1 in EPCs. The knockdown of Spred-1 expression in EPCs from DM promoted proliferation, migration, and inhibited apoptosis of the cells. The signal pathway of miR-126 effecting on EPCs is partially mediated through Ras/ERK/VEGF and PI3K/Akt/eNOS regulation. This study provides the first evidence that miR-126 is downregulated in EPCs from diabetic patients, and impairs EPCs-mediated function via its target, Spred-1, and through Ras/ERK/VEGF and PI3K/Akt/eNOS signal pathway.

Twisted trilayer graphene (TLG) may be the simplest realistic system so far, which has flat bands with nontrivial topology. Here, we give a comprehensive calculation about its band ...structures and the band topology, i.e., valley Chern number of the nearly flat bands, with the continuum model. With realistic parameters, the magic angle of twisted TLG is about 1.12°, at which two nearly flat bands appears. Unlike the twisted bilayer graphene, a small twist angle can induce a tiny gap at all the Dirac points, which can be enlarged further by a perpendicular electric field. The valley Chern numbers of the two nearly flat bands in the twisted TLG depends on the twist angle θ and the perpendicular electric field E⊥. Considering its topological flat bands, the twisted TLG should be an ideal experimental platform to study the strongly correlated physics in topologically nontrivial flat band systems. And, due to its reduced symmetry, the correlated states in twisted TLG should be quite different from that in twisted bilayer graphene and twisted double bilayer graphene.
There is accumulating clinical data supporting the role of probiotics in human health particularly in benefiting the immune system, strengthening the mucosal barrier and suppressing intestinal ...infection. Fermented and unfermented dairy products enriched with probiotic bacteria have developed into one of the most successful categories of functional foods. From a functional ingredient perspective, the generation of these live cultures in dried formats is particularly attractive, however, it does present challenges in terms of retaining probiotic functionality during powder manufacture and storage. Both freeze-dying and spray-drying can be used for manufacture of probiotic powders on a large-scale, however, both approaches expose the cultures to extreme environmental conditions. Methods of production of dried probiotic powders should be such that viability is maintained in the dried powders following manufacture, and storage to ensure that an adequate number of bacteria can be delivered in the final product. This review will focus on how this can be achieved through approaches such as optimizing drying technology, and the drying matrix, and by manipulating probiotic bacteria by classical (microbiological) or genetic approaches.
The complicated structure of the neutron cannot be calculated using first-principles calculations due to the large colour charge of quarks and the self-interaction of gluons. Its simplest structure ...observables are the electromagnetic form factors1, which probe our understanding of the strong interaction. Until now, a small amount of data has been available for the determination of the neutron structure from the time-like kinematical range. Here we present measurements of the Born cross section of electron–positron annihilation reactions into a neutron and anti-neutron pair, and determine the neutron’s effective form factor. The data were recorded with the BESIII experiment at centre-of-mass energies between 2.00 and 3.08 GeV using an integrated luminosity of 647.9 pb−1. Our results improve the statistics on the neutron form factor by more than a factor of 60 over previous measurements, demonstrating that the neutron form factor data from annihilation in the time-like regime is on par with that from electron scattering experiments. The effective form factor of the neutron shows a periodic behaviour, similar to earlier observations of the proton form factor. Future works—both theoretical and experimental—will help illuminate the origin of this oscillation of the electromagnetic structure observables of the nucleon.Form factors encode the structure of nucleons. Measurements from electron–positron annihilation at BESIII reveal an oscillating behaviour of the neutron electromagnetic form factor, and clarify a long-standing photon–nucleon interaction puzzle.
We study the e^{+}e^{-}→γωJ/ψ process using 11.6 fb^{-1} e^{+}e^{-} annihilation data taken at center-of-mass energies from sqrts=4.008 GeV to 4.600 GeV with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII ...storage ring. The X(3872) resonance is observed for the first time in the ωJ/ψ system with a significance of more than 5σ. The relative decay ratio of X(3872)→ωJ/ψ and π^{+}π^{-}J/ψ is measured to be R=1.6_{-0.3}^{+0.4}±0.2, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic (the same hereafter). The sqrts-dependent cross section of e^{+}e^{-}→γX(3872) is also measured and investigated, and it can be described by a single Breit-Wigner resonance, referred to as the Y(4200), with a mass of 4200.6_{-13.3}^{+7.9}±3.0 MeV/c^{2} and a width of 115_{-26}^{+38}±12 MeV. In addition, to describe the ωJ/ψ mass distribution above 3.9 GeV/c^{2}, we need at least one additional Breit-Wigner resonance, labeled as X(3915), in the fit. The mass and width of the X(3915) are determined. The resonant parameters of the X(3915) agree with those of the Y(3940) in B→KωJ/ψ and of the X(3915) in γγ→ωJ/ψ observed by the Belle and BABAR experiments within errors.
BACKGROUND The use of fertility regulating drugs is limited among various socio-ethnic groups due to limited knowledge about their mechanism of action. This study investigates the effect of ...levonorgestrel and mifepristone on attachment of human embryos to an in vitro endometrial construct. METHOD Three-dimensional endometrial constructs were established by co-culturing early luteal phase human endometrial stromal and epithelial cells. Expression of endometrial receptivity markers in this construct were examined by immunohistochemistry. Effects of mifepristone and levonorgestrel on viability and attachment of human blastocysts were investigated. RESULTS Endometrial constructs expressed the factors involved in endometrial receptivity: estrogen receptor, progesterone receptor, vascular endothelial growth factor, leukemia inhibitory factor, interleukin-1, COX-2, MUC-1 and integrin-αVβ3. None of the 15 embryos cultured with mifepristone attached to the endometrial construct (P < 0.01), whereas 10/17 in control, and 6/14 in levonorgestrel, groups attached. The attachment was confirmed by the positive expression of cytokeratin 7 at the attachment site. CONCLUSION Mifepristone inhibits blastocyst attachment. Levonorgestrel did not impair the attachment of human embryos to the in vitro endometrial construct. This model could be used to understand endometrial receptivity and embryo–endometrial dialog and to develop new fertility regulating substances.
AbstractThis paper presents the results of experimental testing a novel dual-tube self-centering buckling-restrained brace (SC-BRB) with pretensioned basalt fiber-reinforced polymer (BFRP) composite ...tendons. Cyclic tensile experiments are first conducted on two sets of BFRP tendons with different diameters. The results confirm that the BFRP tendons have a stable cyclic elastic modulus and sufficient elongation capacity, making them suitable for use as the self-centering tendons in SC-BRBs. Quasi-static experiments are performed using two dual-tube SC-BRB specimens with different core plate areas. Before the failure of the self-centering system, both specimens stably exhibit the expected flag-shaped hysteresis response, with a relatively small residual deformation. The internal forces in the BFRP tendons and the gaps between the tubes and the end plates are measured to validate the performance of the self-centering system. Both specimens meet the requirements for ultimate ductility and cumulative ductility in braces. For a similar initial pretension, a greater core plate area results in greater residual deformation; however, the cumulative energy dissipation and the equivalent viscous damping are also greater.
OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to describe the nutritional status of elderly people living in a rural area of North China. DESIGN: Community-based, cross-sectional prevalence survey. SETTING: 3 rural ...towns of Lvliang City, Shanxi Province, China. PARTICIPANTS: A sample of 1845 community residents (29.1% of those eligible) 55 years or older (birth before 1958-01-01). MEASUREMENTS: The participants were assessed regarding demographic characteristics, height, weight, as well as having a physical examination and blood sampling for serum cholesterol, total homocysteine (tHcy), folate, and vitamin B12 levels. RESULTS: 991 (53.7%) were female and 139 (7.5%) did not complete the anthropometric measurement. Prevalence of underweight and obesity was 3.5% and 24.9% in men and 6.7% and 31.0% in women (P = 0.003, P = 0.005, respectively). Prevalence of hypercholesterolemia and hypocholesterolemia was 13.5% and 52.6% in men and 25.0% and 34.3% in women (P < 0.001, P < 0.001, respectively). Prevalence of high LDL-c concentrations was 8.8% in men and 16.8% in women (P < 0.001). The mean serum tHcy in men (28.8 ± 20.1 μmmol/l) was significantly higher than in women (21.0 ± 15.1 μmmol/L, P < 0.001). Prevalence of hyperhomocysteinemia (defined as > 15μmmol/L) was 79.7% in men and 65.5% in women (P < 0.001). Prevalence of low folate (defined as < 11 nmol/L) and vitamin B12 levels (defiend as < 185 pmol/L) was 70.8 % and 76.8% in men and 56.5% and 72.6% in women (P < 0.001, P = 0.036, respectively). Correlation coefficients between tHcy, folate, and vitamin B12 indicated an inverse linear correlation (r = −0.21, P < 0.001, r = −0.35, P < 0.001, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: As China’s economic climate has developed, the nutritional status of elderly people in the rural parts of the country has improved in some aspects. However, the trend toward obesity will lead to a shift in the burden of obesity-related chronic diseases. In addition, rurally-located elderly people are at high risk of death that may be associated with abnormal serum cholesterol. The data also suggest that severe deficiencies in folate and vitamin B12 levels exist, as well as there being a high prevalence of hyperhomocysteinemia. Folate and vitamin B12 supplementation are necessary to prevent related diseases.
BACKGROUND The standard regimen of the levonorgestrel-only pill (1.5 mg either in a single dose or in a dose of 0.75 mg twice, 12 h apart) administered orally for emergency contraception (EC) has ...been shown to have no effect on endometrial development and markers of endometrial receptivity. We aimed to explore whether repeated oral and single vaginal administration of levonorgestrel affect the endometrium and thus potentially increase the EC efficacy, compared with the standard regimen. METHODS Endometrial biopsies were taken from non-smoking, healthy women with proven fertility on cycle days LH + 6 to LH + 8 in control and levonorgestrel treatment cycles (each woman serving as her own control). Levonorgestrel was administered either orally (0.75 mg × 4, at 24 h intervals on LH + 1 to LH + 4; n = 8) or vaginally (a single dose of 1.5 mg on LH + 2; n = 7). Immunohistochemistry and real-time RT–PCR was performed to compare the levels of protein and mRNA for sex steroid receptors, interleukin-1β, leukaemia inhibitory factor (LIF), vascular endothelial growth factor, cyclooxygenase-2, tumour necrosis factor-α, integrin αvβ3 and mucin 1 in endometrial cells. RESULTS Following the repeated oral treatment, the immunoreactivity of both progesterone receptor (PR)-A and PR-B declined in glandular epithelium (P = 0.03 and P = 0.02, respectively), whereas stromal immunoreactivity and mRNA expression of LIF increased compared with control (P < 0.001 and P = 0.03, respectively). However, vaginal levonorgestrel did not cause any significant endometrial changes. CONCLUSIONS The two regimens of levonorgestrel caused either only minor or no alterations in markers of endometrial receptivity. New agents targeting the endometrial development should be explored in order to increase EC efficacy.
