This Letter presents the first strong evidence for the resolution of the excited B mesons B-1 and B-2(*) as two separate states in fully reconstructed decays to B+(*())pi(-). The mass of B-1 is ...measured to be 5720.6 +/- 2.4 +/- 1.4 MeV/c(2) and the mass difference Delta M between B-2* and B-1 is 26.2 +/- 3.1 +/- 0: 9 MeV/c(2), giving the mass of the B-2* as 5746.8 +/- 2.4 +/- 1.7 MeV/c(2). The production rate for B-1 and B-2* mesons is determined to be a fraction (13.9 +/- 1.9 +/- 3.2)% of the production rate of the B+ meson.
We study the flavor-changing-neutral-current process c-->u micro(+) micro(-) using 1.3 fb(-1) of ppover collisions at square root s = 1.96 TeV recorded by the D0 detector operating at the Fermilab ...Tevatron Collider. We see clear indications of the charged-current mediated D(s)(+) and D(+)-->phipi(+) --> micro(+)micro(-)pi(+) final states with significance greater than 4 standard deviations above background for the D(+) state. We search for the continuum neutral-current decay of D(+)-->pi(+) micro(+) micro(-) in the dimuon invariant mass spectrum away from the phi resonance. We see no evidence of signal above background and set a limit of B(D(+) --> pi(+) micro(+) micro(-))<3.9 x 10(-6) at the 90% C.L. This limit places the most stringent constraint on new phenomena in the c--> u micro(+) micro(-) transition.
Diallyllactones (obtained from cyclic anhydrides via a double allylation reaction promoted by titanium tetrachloride) were cycloisomerised using 5 mol% of cyclooctadienyl ruthenium dichloride in ...ethanol providing the corresponding exomethylene spirolactones in good yields, with moderated to good diastereomeric excess.

We present the results of a search for the effects of large extra spatial dimensions in pp collisions at sqrts = 1.96 TeV in events containing a pair of energetic muons. The data correspond to 246 ...pb(-1) of integrated luminosity collected by the D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. Good agreement with the expected background was found, yielding no evidence for large extra dimensions. We set 95% C.L. lower limits on the fundamental Planck scale between 0.85 and 1.27 TeV within several formalisms. These are the most stringent limits achieved in the dimuon channel to date.
We report the first direct search for the Kaluza-Klein (KK) modes of Randall-Sundrum gravitons using dielectron, dimuon, and diphoton events observed with the D0 detector operating at the Fermilab ...Tevatron pp(-) Collider at sqrts=1.96 TeV. No evidence for resonant production of gravitons has been found in the data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of approximately equal to 260 pb(-1). Lower limits on the mass of the first KK mode at the 95% C.L. have been set between 250 and 785 GeV, depending on its coupling to standard model particles.
In accounting for an odorant's effect on the evaluation of a product, both the odor's intrinsic pleasantness and its appropriateness for that particular product are relevant. When comparing the ...effects of pleasant smells, consumers are likely to prefer products with appropriate smells 10 those with an inappropriate smell. We investigated the effect of adding congruent and incongruent odorants on product evaluations for each of three product categories: food (tea, instant whip, cake mix), personal care (shampoo, deodorant, lip balm), and household products (cream cleaner, air freshener, furniture wax), In a between-subjects design, 96 respondents judged scented and unscented products presented in commercial packages of major national brands. The respondents assessed the overall evaluation, 14 to 19 beliefs about the product, buying intention, and the frequency of use for each product. Respondents were instructed to evaluate each product as they would in a store. Although congruency ratings between odor and product show that the manipulation of congruency was successful, no main effect was found for the congruency on overall evaluations of the products. To account for this unexpected finding, we speculate that congruency between odor and product may be more important during product consumption or product use than during its selection. In addition, the odor's effects may have been attenuated in our experiment because we asked our respondents to rate each product on the attribute ‘has a nice smell’.
Proper positioning of the prosthesis components in total knee arthroplasty is an important factor for satisfactory outcomes such as mobility, pain and wear. If an independent cutting technique is ...performed, rotational alignment of the femoral component should adapt patient's specific anatomy. The distal epiphyseal femoral torsion (DEFT) is adjusted in order to align the prosthetic posterior condylar axis along the bone transepicondylar axis. The DEFT presents a high rate of interindividual variations. Computed tomography scanning produces reliable and reproducible measurement of the epiphyseal torsion, but this requires additional procedure. We therefore used intraoperative computed navigation for DEFT measurement, thus accurately adapting each patient's epiphyseal torsion during the procedure, without resorting to the preoperative CT scan.
This prospective study included 70 patients with arthritic knees who underwent TKA. Mean patient age was 74 years old. There were 52 women, 35 right knees, 33 genu varum, 19 genu valgum, 18 normal knees. DEFT was determined by preoperative CT scan, using the Yoshioka angle referencing. Distal epiphyseal femoral torsion measurement was carried out using the Navitrack system (Orthosoft). The DEFT was the navigated measured angle between the transepicondylar axis and the posterior condylar axis manually located and digitized with an optically tracked stylus. The navigation system was therefore used as a simple digital measurement device to evaluate the distal epiphyseal femoral torsion. We had established the reference transepicondylar axis as the line connecting the prominence of the medial and lateral epicondyles. During the procedure, we also carried out computer-assisted measurement of HKA axis in full extension and at 90 degrees of knee flexion. Correlation between the navigated HKA in full extension and HKA measured on the preoperative pangonogram (R(2)=0.621) demonstrated a high reliability of the navigation system in the frontal plane.
There was no correlation between the mean epiphyseal torsion determined with computer navigation and the epiphyseal torsion measured on the CT scan (R(2)=0.09). Significant interindividual variations were reported. Navigated HKA at 90 degrees of knee flexion was not correlated with navigated HKA in full extension (R(2)=0.398) nor with epiphyseal torsion measured on the CT scan (R(2)=0.063). Results demonstrated a major interindividual variation.
Our results report a large variability in distal epiphyseal femoral torsion measured with CT scan. Moreover, computed navigation does not provide a reliable and reproducible evaluation of the epiphyseal torsion. Due to inaccurate identification of femoral epicondyles, the related navigated measurement is not considered to be reliable and reproducible. Navigated HKA at 90 degrees of knee flexion is not a fair indirect reflection of epiphyseal torsion. Computer-assisted navigation fails to provide direct or indirect, reliable and reproducible intraoperative measurement of distal epiphyseal femoral torsion. Preoperative CT scan is the only reliable method to produce accurate measurement of distal epiphyseal femoral torsion.
The results of a search for squarks and gluinos using data from p (p) over bar collisions recorded at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV by the DO detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider are ...reported. The topologies analyzed consist of acoplanar-jet and multijet events with large missing transverse energy. No evidence for the production of squarks or gluinos was found in a data sample of 310pb(-1). Lower limits of 325 and 241 GeV were derived at the 95% C.L. on the squark and gluino masses, respectively, within the framework of minimal supergravity with tan beta=3, A(0) = 0, and mu < 0.
Long-lived, heavy particles are predicted in a number of models beyond the standard model of particle physics. We present the first direct search for such particles' decays, occurring up to 100 h ...after their production and not synchronized with an accelerator bunch crossing. We apply the analysis to the gluino (g), predicted in split supersymmetry, which after hadronization can become charged and lose enough momentum through ionization to come to rest in dense particle detectors. Approximately 410 pb(-1) of p (p) over bar collisions at root s = 1.96 TeV collected with the D0 detector during Run II of the Fermilab Tevatron collider are analyzed in search of such "stopped gluinos" decaying into a gluon and a neutralino ((chi) over tilde (0)(1)). Limits are placed on the (gluino cross section) x (probability to stop) x BR((g) over tilde -> g (chi) over tilde (0)(1)) as a function of the gluino and (chi) over tilde (0)(1) masses, for gluino lifetimes from 30 mu s-100 h.
