The article aims to show the similarities and differences between Nietzsche’s interpretative knowledge and Gadamer’s interpretative understanding. Emphasizing the “interpretative” nature of knowledge ...and understanding both authors faced the problem: how is it possible to avoid the dogmatic affirmation of one and only “correct” interpretation without lapsing into absolute relativism, which rejects any possibility of speaking about “validity” of competing interpretations. The dilemma of dogmatism and relativism in understanding of “meaning” is also the central problem of modern hermeneutics that had sparkled the debate between H. G. Gadamer and E. Betti, J. Derrida and J. Habermas. This article is intended to support two theses. First, there are irreducible differences between positions of Nietzsche and Gadamer, therefore, any attemptsto reduce Nietzsche’s “perspectivism” to Gadamer’s “philosophical hermeneutics” are not valid. Second, the problem of relativism and dogmatism of “meaning” in Gadamer’s hermeneutics can be solved through the provision of Husserl’s phenomenology, which describes how we recognize the meaning of a “thing” as a “thing in itself” through different “profiles”. However, Nietzsche’s perspectivism, which criticizes dogmatism of “meaning”, does not solve the problem and hence slides to the other extreme – relativism.
The aim of the paper is to explicate Foucault’s interpretational access to Nietzsche’s basic concepts; second, to show Nietzsche’s importance for the development of M. Foucault‘s genealogy; and ...third, to disclose how Foucault’s genealogical research in polemics with J. Habermas turns to the problem of legitimizing the question “How can genealogical history and a variety of social practices criticism?” This article is intended to support the thesis that genealogical research developed by Foucault can be seen as legitimate historical and social practice and an alternative to Habermasian project.
The paper aims to define the terms used by Emilio Betti, explicate the basic attitudes and the essential problems of his methodical hermeneutics, and highlight fundamental differences and ...disagreements between Betti’s “methodical hermeneutics” and Hans-Georg Gadamer’s “philosophical hermeneutics”. Betti came to the indictment that Gadamer turned the objective meaning of the author to subjective and his-torical significance which had led to relativism. The paper first argues that objective meaning of the author or the “autonomy of the object”, against the will of Betti, disappears and moves to the realm of consciousness of the interpreter. When Betti claimed, emphasizing “autonomy of the object”, that objectivity of the “alien spirit” is achieved through the interpreter’s congeniality, he has not strengthened but weakened the autonomy of the spirit. Second, Betti is wrong in stating that Gadamer’s interpreter, referring to the “anticipation of the fullness”, occupies the monopoly of the truth of which he becomes the instance of ownership or control. Third, Betti is wrong in stating that Gadamer’s “philosophical hermeneutics” denies the autonomy of the object, and thus leads to relativism. Gadamer’s “philosophical hermeneutics” provides the autonomy of the text not only with respect to the interpreter, but also with respect to the creativity of the author and the primary reader. Fourth, the article states that the effect of Gadamer’s hermeneutical understanding is that it does not subjectively distort the meaning of truth or objectivity, as Betti wanted to show, but expands and exposes the subjectivity of interpretation – as a legitimate or illegitimate – with respect to what has been written or said.
Keywords: interpretation, understanding, meaning, E. Betti’s methodological hermeneutics, H.G. Gadamer’s philosophical hermeneutics.
The article seeks to highlight and thus draw attention to some important features of A. Sverdiolas’s thinking and his hermeneutic research. The article discusses three models of cultural ...hermeneutics: “weak hermeneutics,” “strong hermeneutics,” and “deep hermeneutics.” The aim of the article is to substantiate the thesis that A. Sverdiolas’s hermeneutics can be assigned to the so-called “strong hermeneutics,” but with elements that are also characteristic of the so-called “deep hermeneutics.” The article emphasizes that A. Sverdiolas considers and discusses in his texts the conceptual approaches of the so-called “weak hermeneutics,” but does not theoretically engage in it. It should be emphasized that A. Sverdiolas considers and discusses the conceptual approaches of the so-called “weak hermeneutics,” but does not theoretically engage in it. Also, based on the metaphorical image of “urbanization,” the article seeks to draw attention to A. Sverdiolas’s contribution to expanding and deepening research in the field of culture in Lithuania.
