In this article I analyse the handling of uncertainty in dance improvisation performance. I focus on the sources of uncertainty together with techniques used to manage it. I also show that magic ...practices are integrated among these techniques and that all the described techniques are pragmatic and reasonable, though they do not provide guaranteed effects. This leads to an analysis of the possible role of belief in ritual practice. The efficiency of ritualist magic in handling uncertainty is ascribed to its ability to create an intimately supportive atmosphere of mutual reliability. Belief regarding the causal efficiency of magic is then shown as an issue emerging only in controversies over the nature of collective enterprise as a way of othering. The complexity of dance and life in general makes uncertainty inevitable. Hence, all theoretical knowledge in terms of consequences of action is provisional. The text then recommends rejecting the knowledge-belief dichotomy and reshaping belief to analytically comprise knowledge as intertwined with uncertainty.
There is a theoretical and methodological toolbox for postcolonial, i.e. truly democratic, religious studies which is available and ready for use. Through it, the discipline can drop the analytical ...categories of "religion" and "belief " completely from its vocabulary. Timothy Fitzgerald's criticism of the colonising rhetorical structure of "religion" can thus be carried into completion. This was made possible by redesigning a social science methodology within the study of science and technology. Bruno Latour and his colleagues refined it by employing approaches from ethnomethodology and symbolic interactionism. This paper demonstrates how to transplant this symmetrical approach to religious studies. The distinctiveness of the discipline won't be lost if religion remains in the background as a completely vague horizon-idea arranging the range of heterogeneous interests of various scholars in the field together. Its etic (theoretical) use, however, must be strictly prohibited in order to foster the elaboration of precise descriptive language capturing the exact components operating in the ordering processes under scrutiny.

Terms ‘new religions’ or ‘new religious movements’ refer usually to 1950s or 1960s as the time of the origin of particular religious groups/movements. Yet to set up a date is something else than to ...clarify why the date is important. The debate concerning NRMs is, however, either surprisingly silent on this issue or inconsistent in subsuming particular cases under this heading. Sociologists and scholars of religion seem to do, in this field, little more than balancing the anti-cultist discourse with minor terminological differences creating an impression of value neutrality. In the following article I will examine the concept of ‘new religions’ on the background of an introduction of communication through the printed media. Using data from my research on acculturation of Hinduism in Czech occultism during the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, I will point out that this factor played a significant role in modernization of religions in general – ‘new’ as well as ‘old’ –and that after contrasting new religiosity with traditional religiosity while dwelling on a more conservative understanding of the ‘traditional’, the difference between ‘new’ and ‘old’ religions will largely vanish while new possibilities of understanding more important distinctions in the field of religion in modern societies might emerge.
