Selecting a suitable Multi Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) method is a crucial stage to establish a Solid Waste Management (SWM) system. Main objective of the current study is to demonstrate and ...evaluate a proposed method using Multiple Criteria Decision Making methods (MCDM). An improved version of Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) applied to obtain the best municipal solid waste management method by comparing and ranking the scenarios. Applying this method in order to rank treatment methods is introduced as one contribution of the study. Besides, Viekriterijumsko Kompromisno Rangiranje (VIKOR) compromise solution method applied for sensitivity analyses. The proposed method can assist urban decision makers in prioritizing and selecting an optimized Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) treatment system. Besides, a logical and systematic scientific method was proposed to guide an appropriate decision-making.
A modified TOPSIS methodology as a superior to existing methods for first time was applied for MSW problems. Applying this method in order to rank treatment methods is introduced as one contribution of the study. Next, 11 scenarios of MSW treatment methods are defined and compared environmentally and economically based on the waste management conditions. Results show that integrating a sanitary landfill (18.1%), RDF (3.1%), composting (2%), anaerobic digestion (40.4%), and recycling (36.4%) was an optimized model of integrated waste management. An applied decision-making structure provides the opportunity for optimum decision-making. Therefore, the mix of recycling and anaerobic digestion and a sanitary landfill with Electricity Production (EP) are the preferred options for MSW management.
•The study is a new approach of multi-criteria analysis by TOPSIS and VIKOR.•A systematic and logical scientific method was proposed for SWM.•TOPSIS was applied to rank treatment methods as a contribution of the study.•The model has less potential of environmental impacts and more economic benefits.
Molecular dynamics simulations were used to characterize the wetting behavior of crystalline cellulose planes in contact with a thin oily film of oleic acid. Cellulose crystal planes with higher ...molecular protrusions and increased surface area produced stronger adhesion if compared to other crystal planes due to enhanced wetting and hydrogen bonding. The detailed characteristics of crystal plane features and the contribution of directional hydrogen bonding was investigated. Similarly, oleophilicity of the cellulose planes increased with the increase in surface roughness and number of directional hydrogen bonds. These results correlate with conclusions drawn from experimental studies such as adhesion of an ink vehicle on cellulose surface.
Summary
Pre‐oxygenation is an essential part of rapid sequence induction of general anaesthesia for emergency surgery, in order to increase the oxygen reservoir in the lungs. We performed a ...randomised controlled trial of transnasal humidified rapid insufflation ventilatory exchange (THRIVE) pre‐oxygenation or facemask pre‐oxygenation in patients undergoing emergency surgery. Twenty patients were allocated to each group. No patient developed arterial oxygen saturation < 90% during attempted tracheal intubation. Arterial blood gases were sampled from an arterial catheter immediately after intubation. The mean (SD) PaO2 was 43.7 (15.2) kPa in the THRIVE group vs. 41.9 (16.2) kPa in the facemask group (p = 0.722); PaCO2 was 5.8 (1.1) kPa in the THRIVE group vs. 5.6 (1.0) kPa in the facemask group (p = 0.631); arterial pH was 7.36 (0.05) in the THRIVE group vs. 7.34 (0.06) in the facemask group (p = 0.447). No airway rescue manoeuvres were needed, and there were no differences in the number of laryngoscopy attempts between the groups. In spite of this, patients in the THRIVE group had a significantly longer apnoea time of 248 (71) s compared with 123 (55) s in the facemask group (p < 0.001). Transnasal humidified rapid insufflation ventilatory exchange is a practicable method for pre‐oxygenating patients during rapid sequence induction of general anaesthesia for emergency surgery; we found that it maintained an equivalent blood gas profile to facemask pre‐oxygenation, in spite of a significantly longer apnoea time.
Angiogenesis is a balanced process controlled by pro- and anti-angiogenic molecules of which the regulation is not fully understood. Besides classical gene regulation, miRNAs have emerged as ...post-transcriptional regulators of angiogenesis. Furthermore, epigenetic changes caused by histone-modifying enzymes were shown to modulate angiogenesis as well. However, a possible interplay between miRNAs and histone-modulating enzymes during angiogenesis has not been described. Here we show that VEGF-mediated down-regulation of miR-101 caused pro-angiogenic effects. We found that the pro-angiogenic effects are partly mediated through reduced repression by miR-101 of the histone-methyltransferase EZH2, a member of the Polycomb group family, thereby increasing methylation of histone H3 at lysine 27 and transcriptome alterations. In vitro, the sprouting and migratory properties of primary endothelial cell cultures were reduced by inhibiting EZH2 through up-regulation of miR-101, siRNA-mediated knockdown of EZH2, or treatment with 3-Deazaneplanocin-A (DZNep), a small molecule inhibitor of EZH2 methyltransferase activity. In addition, we found that systemic DZNep administration reduced the number of blood vessels in a subcutaneous glioblastoma mouse model, without showing adverse toxicities. Altogether, by identifying a pro-angiogenic VEGF/miR-101/EZH2 axis in endothelial cells we provide evidence for a functional link between growth factor-mediated signaling, post-transcriptional silencing, and histone-methylation in the angiogenesis process. Inhibition of EZH2 may prove therapeutic in diseases in which aberrant vascularization plays a role.

The interactions of silver chromate (Ag2CrO4) with a femtosecond (fs) laser and electron beam irradiations were investigated. For the first time, the growth and coalescence of metallic Ag ...nanoparticles (NPs) on an Ag2CrO4 surface via fs laser irradiation can be reported. Furthermore, electron beam irradiation causes a segregation process of Ag NPs in which Ag nanofilaments are obtained. The Ag2CrO4 particles were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), micro-Raman spectroscopy (Raman), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), high-resolution electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). According to the results, the fs/electron beam irradiations of Ag2CrO4 are environmentally friendly, fast, and effective methods to produce metallic Ag NPs. Both strategies have enormous potential for the synthesis and morphological control of Ag NPs on templates or biotemplates, core–shells, decorations, and composites based on Ag2−xCrO4:Ag materials, which are difficult to synthesize using conventional chemical and physical methods.
Nonmotor symptoms (NMS) have a great impact on patients with Parkinson disease (PD). The Non-Motor Symptoms Scale (NMSS) is an instrument specifically designed for the comprehensive assessment of NMS ...in patients with PD. NMSS psychometric properties have been tested in this study.
Data were collected in 12 centers across 10 countries in America, Asia, and Europe. In addition to the NMSS, the following measures were applied: Scales for Outcomes in Parkinson's Disease (SCOPA)-Motor, SCOPA-Psychiatric Complications (SCOPA-PC), SCOPA-Cognition, Hoehn and Yahr Staging (HY), Clinical Impression of Severity Index for Parkinson's Disease (CISI-PD), SCOPA-Autonomic, Parkinson's Disease Sleep Scale (PDSS), Parkinson's Disease Questionnaire-39 items (PDQ-39), and EuroQol-5 dimensions (EQ-5D). NMSS acceptability, reliability, validity, and precision were analyzed.
Four hundred eleven patients with PD, 61.3% men, were recruited. The mean age was 64.5 +/- 9.9 years, and mean disease duration was 8.1 +/- 5.7 years. The NMSS score was 57.1 +/- 44.0 points. The scale was free of floor or ceiling effects. For domains, the Cronbach alpha coefficient ranged from 0.44 to 0.85. The intraclass correlation coefficient (0.90 for the total score, 0.67-0.91 for domains) and Lin concordance coefficient (0.88) suggested satisfactory reproducibility. The NMSS total score correlated significantly with SCOPA-Autonomic, PDQ-39, and EQ-5D (r(S) = 0.57-0.70). Association was close between NMSS domains and the corresponding SCOPA-Autonomic domains (r(S) = 0.51-0.65) and also with scales measuring related constructs (PDSS, SCOPA-PC) (all p < 0.0001). The NMSS total score was higher for women (p < 0.02) and for increasing disease duration, HY, and CISI-PD severity level (p < 0.001). The SEM was 13.91 for total score and 1.71 to 4.73 for domains.
The Non-Motor Symptoms Scale is an acceptable, reproducible, valid, and precise assessment instrument for nonmotor symptoms in Parkinson disease.
Peppermint (Lamiaceae) is an aromatic herb with culinary, medicinal, and industrial properties. In June 2022, symptoms and signs of foliar rust were observed in four commercial fields of peppermint ...(Mentha × piperita) in San Buenaventura Tecalzingo, San Martín Texmelucan, Puebla, Mexico (19°14'34.0"N 98°27'25.4"W; 19°14'16.7"N 98°27'21.4"W; 19°14'37.0"N 98°27'07.7"W; 19°15'00.6"N 98°26'54.7"W). Two diseased plants were collected at each site. The disease was present in 50% of the plants and the damaged foliar tissue was under 17%. Initial symptoms included small chlorotic spots on the adaxial surface of the leaves, which later spread to form a necrotic area surrounded by a broad chlorotic halo. Necrosis developed only in the presence of abundant reddish-brown pustules on the abaxial surface of the leaf, while smaller pustules were observed on the adaxial surface. The signs were detected as numerous reddish-brown pustules on the abaxial surface of the leaves. The infected leaves of all samples showed subepidermal uredinia, erumpent, with hyaline and cylindrical paraphyses. Urediniospores (n = 50) were hyaline to light brown, echinulate, with two germinative pores, obovoid (16.5-26.5 × 11.5-25.5 μm, mean ± SD = 22 ± 1.6 × 19 ± 0.4 μm and 0.6 μm of wall thickness), individually supported on pedicels. Morphological characteristics aligned most closely with the description of Puccinia menthae by Kabaktepe et al. (2017) and Solano-Báez et al. (2022). A voucher specimen was deposited in the Herbarium of the Department of Plant-Insect Interactions at the Biotic Products Development Center of the National Polytechnic Institute under accession no. IPN 10.0115. From one sample, genomic DNA was extracted, and the 28S gene region of rDNA was amplified by a nested PCR using the primer sets Rust2inv (Aime, 2006) and LR6 (Vilgalys and Hester, 1990), and Rust28SF (Aime et al., 2018), and LR5 (Vilgalys and Hester, 1990) for the first and second reactions, respectively. The obtained sequence (GenBank accession No. OQ552847) showed 100% homology (902/1304bp) with the type-specimen sequence of P. menthae (DQ354513) from Cunila origanoides from USA (Aime, 2006). A phylogenetic analysis using Maximum Likelihood including a published 28S dataset for Puccinia species was executed and the isolate IPN 10.0115 was grouped into a clade of P. menthae with bootstrap support value of 100%. Pathogenicity was assessed by spraying a suspension of urediniospores (1×104 spores/ml) of the isolate IPN 10.0115 onto six healthy peppermint plants (Mentha × piperita) that were 30 days old, while six other plants were sprayed with sterile distilled water. All plants were kept in a wet chamber for 48 h at temperatures from 28±2°C and relative humidity of 95%, after which the plastic bag was removed. All inoculated plants developed disease symptoms after 15 days, whereas the control plants remained symptomless. The pathogenicity assay was conducted twice with similar results. The morphology of the pathogen recovered from the pustules of the inoculated plants was identical to that originally recollected, thus fulfilling Koch'postulates. To our knowledge, this is the first report of Puccinia menthae causing leaf rust on Mentha × piperita in Mexico. This species has been previously identified using morphological characteristics in Brazil, Canada, Poland, and USA on Mentha × piperita (Farr and Rossman, 2023). Since the disease defoliates peppermint plants reducing yield, further information on disease management is needed.
Aim
To investigate the correlation between the concentration of active‐matrix metalloproteinases‐9 (aMMP‐9) in pulpal blood and the outcome of pulpotomy in mature permanent teeth with symptomatic ...irreversible pulpitis (SIP).
Methodology
Forty permanent molar teeth with a clinical diagnosis of SIP and normal apical tissues with periapical index (PAI) score ≤ 2 and ten permanent teeth (8 molars and two premolars) with a diagnosis of normal pulp that required root canal treatment for prosthetic reasons from patients between the ages of 15–35 years were recruited. All clinical procedures were performed under local anaesthesia and rubber dam isolation. After access opening, the coronal pulp tissue was amputated up to the canal orifice. A 100 μL volume of the pulpal blood was collected using a micropipette and transported to the laboratory. Sodium hypochlorite (2.5 %) was used as a haemostatic agent, and mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) was used as the pulp capping material. The tooth was restored with composite at the same visit. Teeth with normal pulps were treated with single‐visit root canal treatment. Patients with pulpotomy were recalled at 6 and 12 months. Outcome assessment of teeth with pulpotomy was carried out at 12 months and was categorized as success (asymptomatic patients with PAI score ≤ 2) or failure (symptomatic patients or PAI score ≥ 3). Quantification of aMMP‐9 in pulpal blood was achieved using a fluorometric assay. The following statistical analyses were performed to assess the data: t‐test, Fisher's exact test, kappa coefficient, non‐parametric test, Wilcoxon rank‐sum test, Spearman rank correlation test and receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC).
Result
The success rate of pulpotomy was 88 % at 12‐months. There was a significant difference between the median concentrations of aMMP‐9 in pulpal blood of teeth with normal pulps (52 (12–96) ng mL−1:) and SIP (193.3 (25.8–607.7) ng mL−1:) (P = 0.0003) and successful (132.3 (25.8–548.3) ng mL−1:) and failed cases (512.4 (334.8–607.7 ng mL−1:) (P = 0.0015) of MTA pulpotomy. A significant association was established between aMMP‐9 concentration and outcome of pulpotomy. The area under the receiver operating characteristics curve (0.9484, 95%CI) suggested excellent discriminatory power of aMMP‐9 concentration in pulpal blood to predict the pulpotomy outcome.
Conclusion
The pulpal blood concentration of aMMP‐9 was significantly associated with the outcome of pulpotomy in teeth with symptomatic irreversible pulpitis, where it may be used as a potential prognostic biomarker.
Brassinosteroids have been extensively used to overcome various abiotic stresses. But its role in combined stress of salt and excess copper remains unexplored. Seeds of two cultivars (Rocket and ...Jumbo) of
Cucumis sativus
were grown in sand amended with copper (100 mg kg
−1
), and developed seedlings were exposed to salt stress in the form of NaCl (150 mM) at the 30-day stage of growth for 3 days. These seedlings were subsequently sprayed with 0 or 0.01 μM of 24-epibrassinolide (EBL) at the 35-day stage. The plants exposed to NaCl and Cu in combination exhibited a significant decline in fresh and dry mass of plant, chlorophyll content, activities of carbonic anhydrase, net photosynthetic rate and maximum quantum yield of the PSII primary photochemistry followed by NaCl and Cu stress alone, more severely in Jumbo than in Rocket. However, the follow-up treatment with EBL to the stressed and nonstressed plant improved growth, chlorophyll content, carbonic anhydrase activity and photosynthetic efficiency, and further enhanced the activity of various antioxidant enzymes viz. catalase, peroxidase and superoxide dismutase and content of proline at the 40-day stage of growth, and the response of the hormone was more effective in Rocket than in Jumbo. The elevated level of antioxidant enzymes as well as proline could have conferred tolerance to the NaCl- and/or Cu-stressed plants resulting in improved growth, water relations and photosynthetic attributes. Furthermore, antioxidant enzyme activity and proline content were more enhanced in Rocket than in Jumbo cultivar.
Idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension (IPAH) is a fatal disease that comprises sustained vasoconstriction, enhanced proliferation of pulmonary vascular cells, and in situ thrombosis. The ...discovery of several contributing signaling pathways in recent years has resulted in an expanding array of novel therapies; however, IPAH remains a progressive disease with poor outcome in most instances. To identify new regulatory pathways of vascular remodeling in IPAH, we performed transcriptome-wide expression profiling of laser-microdissected pulmonary arterial resistance vessels derived from explanted IPAH and nontransplanted donor lung tissues. Statistical analysis of the data derived from six individuals in each group showed significant regulation of several mediators of the canonical and noncanonical WNT pathway. As to the noncanonical WNT pathway, the planar cell polarity (PCP) pathway, the ras homolog gene family member A (RHOA), and ras-related C3 botulinum toxin substrate-1 (RAC1) were strongly up-regulated. Real-time PCR of laser-microdissected pulmonary arteries confirmed these array results and showed in addition significant up-regulation of further PCP mediators wingless member 11 (WNT11), disheveled associated activator of morphogenesis-1 (DAAM1), disheveled (DSV), and RHO-kinase (ROCK). Immunohistochemical staining and semiquantitative expression analysis confirmed the markedly enhanced expression of the PCP mediators in the pulmonary resistance vessels, in particular in the endothelial layer in IPAH. Therefore we propose the PCP pathway to be critically involved in the regulation of vascular remodeling in IPAH.
