To assess the risk factors, lipid and apolipoprotein profile, hemostasis variables, and polymorphisms of the apolipoprotein AI-CIII gene in early coronary artery disease (CAD).
Case-control study ...with 112 patients in each group controlled by sex and age. After clinical evaluation and nutritional instruction, blood samples were collected for biochemical assays and genetic study.
Familial history of early CAD (64 vs 39%), arterial hypertension (69 vs 36%), diabetes mellitus (25 vs 3%), and previous smoking (71 vs 46%) were more prevalent in the case group (p<0.001). Hypertension and diabetes were independent risk factors. Early CAD was characterized by higher serum levels of total cholesterol (235 +/-6 vs 209 +/- 4 mg/dL), of LDL-c (154 +/- 5 vs 135 +/- 4 mg/dL), triglycerides (205 +/- 12 vs 143 +/- 9 mg/dL), and apolipoprotein B (129 +/- 3 vs 105 +/- 3 mg/dL), and lower serum levels of HDL-c (40 +/- 1 vs 46 +/- 1 mg/dL) and apolipoprotein AI (134 +/- 2 vs 146 +/- 2mg/dL) p<0.01, in addition to an elevation in fibrinogen and D-dimer (p<0.02). The simultaneous presence of the rare alleles of the APO AI-CIII genes in early CAD are associated with hypertriglyceridemia (p=0.03).
Of the classical risk factors, hypertension and diabetes mellitus were independently associated with early CAD. In addition to an unfavorable lipid profile, an increase in the thrombotic risk was identified in this population. An additive effect of the APO AI-CIII genes was observed in triglyceride levels.
The standard \(\Lambda\) Cold Dark Matter cosmological model provides a wonderful fit to current cosmological data, but a few tensions and anomalies became statistically significant with the latest ...data analyses. While these anomalies could be due to the presence of systematic errors in the experiments, they could also indicate the need for new physics beyond the standard model. In this Letter of Interest we focus on the tension of the Planck data with weak lensing measurements and redshift surveys, about the value of the matter energy density \(\Omega_m\), and the amplitude or rate of the growth of structure (\(\sigma_8,f\sigma_8\)). We list a few interesting models for solving this tension, and we discuss the importance of trying to fit with a single model a full array of data and not just one parameter at a time.
Two patients referred to a Sleep Disorders Centre complaining of insomnia and nightly binging at multiple nocturnal awakenings. Both patients completed a sleep evaluation protocol, during which their ...sleep was monitored by actigraphy for 7 consecutive nights. We calculated sleep measures removing all eating episodes occurred during the night (Sleep Without Eating Episodes; SWEE). Taking into account the SWEE actigraphic parameters, the 2 cases proved to be actigraphically very different, recommending different therapeutic approaches. Actigraphy could be a helpful tool in the assessment of a patient complaining of sleep disruption associated with nocturnal eating. PUBLICATION ABSTRACT
The aim of this study was to compare the representation of self in REM and SWS dreams. Ninety volunteers slept two non-consecutive nights in the sleep laboratory under electropolygraphic control. ...They were awakened for one report per night. Awakenings were made, in counterbalanced order, from Slow Wave Sleep and Rapid Eye Movements sleep. Dream reports (90 SWS and 90 REM) were scored by independent judges as regards: a) length (according to temporal units); b) representation of self (according to a nominal eight-point scale). Results showed that: a) REM dream reports were significantly longer than SWS dream reports; b) the representation of Self in REM dream reports is quite similar to the waking experience of Self; c) the representation of Self in SWS dream reports presented a wide variety of characteristics (from a thinking agent or passive observer, to a waking-like Self experience); d) the differences between REM and SWS dream reports in representation of Self persisted independently of report length. Results are discussed referring to a cognitive model of dream production. PUBLICATION ABSTRACT
The objectives of this study were to determine normal changes in calf tissue oxygenation during three progressively intense acute bouts of exercise in healthy adults, and to determine effects of age, ...sex, and physical activity on calf tissue oxygenation. A convenience sample of 94 healthy adults (50 males, 44 females; mean age 43 years, range 2079) performed an exercise protocol consisting of six consecutive 5-minute test stages: rest, 0-W active plantar/dorsiflexion, rest, 4-W resistive plantar flexion, rest, and 8-W resistive plantar flexion. Tissue oxygen saturation ("oxygenation," S.sub.tO.sub.2, % sat.) was measured at the medial calf via near-infrared spectroscopy. Compared with baseline rest, minimum S.sub.tO.sub.2 during 0-, 4- and 8-W exercises decreased by 3.3 % sat. (5%), 7.0 % sat. (10%), and 10.9 % sat. (15%), respectively. Age and physical activity had no effect on S.sub.tO.sub.2. Compared with men, overall median S.sub.tO.sub.2 for women was lower (by 15%), calf skinfold was higher (by 107%), and calf skin temperature was lower (by 3%). (All P-values < 0.001.) Light-intensity resistive plantar flexion exercise induces partial desaturation of the medial gastrocnemius in healthy adults. These results provide normative S.sub.tO.sub.2 responses during exercise that will facilitate development of an objective functional test for patients with calf claudication. A borderline Schwann cell tumour with common bile duct compression and jaundice is extremely rare. This paper presents the first report in the Italian literature of a hepatojejunostomy for a ...symptomatic lesion midway between benign and malignant.
