Ultrafast optical heating of the electrons in ferrimagnetic metals can result in all-optical switching (AOS) of the magnetization. Here we report quantitative measurements of the temperature rise of ...GdFeCo thin films during helicity-independent AOS. Critical switching fluences are obtained as a function of the initial temperature of the sample and for laser pulse durations from 55 fs to 15 ps. We conclude that nonequilibrium phenomena are necessary for helicity-independent AOS, although the peak electron temperature does not play a critical role. Pump-probe time-resolved experiments show that the switching time increases as the pulse duration increases, with 10 ps pulses resulting in switching times of ∼13 ps. These results raise new questions about the fundamental mechanism of helicity-independent AOS.
Based on an e+e− collision data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 567 pb−1 taken at the center-of-mass energy of s=4.6 GeV with the BESIII detector, we measure the absolute ...branching fraction of the inclusive decay Λc+→Λ+X to be B(Λc+→Λ+X)=(38.2−2.2+2.8±0.9)% using the double-tag method, where X refers to any possible final state particles. In addition, we search for direct CP violation in the charge asymmetry of this inclusive decay for the first time, and obtain ACP≡B(Λc+→Λ+X)−B(Λ¯c−→Λ¯+X)/B(Λc+→Λ+X)+B(Λ¯c−→Λ¯+X)=(2.1−6.6+7.0±1.6)%, a statistically limited result with no evidence of CP violation.
Background & Aims Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) are becoming more common in Asia, but epidemiologic data are lacking. The Asia-Pacific Crohn’s and Colitis Epidemiology Study aimed to determine ...the incidence and phenotype of IBD in 8 countries across Asia and in Australia. Methods We performed a prospective, population-based study of IBD incidence in predefined catchment areas, collecting data for 1 year, starting on April 1, 2011. New cases were ascertained from multiple overlapping sources and entered into a Web-based database. Cases were confirmed using standard criteria. Local endoscopy, pathology, and pharmacy records were searched to ensure completeness of case capture. Results We identified 419 new cases of IBD (232 of ulcerative colitis UC, 166 of Crohn’s disease CD, and 21 IBD-undetermined). The crude annual overall incidence values per 100,000 individuals were 1.37 for IBD in Asia (95% confidence interval: 1.25−1.51; 0.76 for UC, 0.54 for CD, and 0.07 for IBD-undetermined) and 23.67 in Australia (95% confidence interval: 18.46−29.85; 7.33 for UC, 14.00 for CD, and 2.33 for IBD-undetermined). China had the highest incidence of IBD in Asia (3.44 per 100,000 individuals). The ratios of UC to CD were 2.0 in Asia and 0.5 in Australia. Median time from symptom onset to diagnosis was 5.5 months (interquartile range, 1.4−15 months). Complicated CD (stricturing, penetrating, or perianal disease) was more common in Asia than Australia (52% vs 24%; P = .001), and a family history of IBD was less common in Asia (3% vs 17%; P < .001). Conclusions We performed a large-scale population-based study and found that although the incidence of IBD varies throughout Asia, it is still lower than in the West. IBD can be as severe or more severe in Asia than in the West. The emergence of IBD in Asia will result in the need for specific health care resources, and offers a unique opportunity to study etiologic factors in developing nations.
Using a data sample of ${e}^{+}{e}^{{-}}$ collisions corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $567\text{ }\text{ }{\mathrm{pb}}^{{-}1}$ collected at a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=4.6\text{ ...}\text{ }\mathrm{GeV}$ with the BESIII detector, we measure the absolute branching fraction of the inclusive semileptonic ${\mathrm{{\Lambda}}}_{c}^{+}$ decay with a double-tag method. We obtain $\mathcal{B}({\mathrm{{\Lambda}}}_{c}^{+}{\rightarrow}X{e}^{+}{{\nu}}_{e})=(3.95\pm{}0.34\pm{}0.09)%$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. Using the known ${\mathrm{{\Lambda}}}_{c}^{+}$ lifetime and the charge-averaged semileptonic decay width of nonstrange charmed mesons (${D}^{0}$ and ${D}^{+}$), we obtain the ratio of the inclusive semileptonic decay widths $\mathrm{{\Gamma}}({\mathrm{{\Lambda}}}_{c}^{+}{\rightarrow}X{e}^{+}{{\nu}}_{e})/\overline{\mathrm{{\Gamma}}}(D{\rightarrow}X{e}^{+}{{\nu}}_{e})=1.26\pm{}0.12$.
The incidence of young-onset colorectal cancer (CRC) is reported to be increasing in the Western world. There are no population-based studies assessing the trend across Asia.
We performed a ...multinational cohort study involving four Asian countries/regions, namely Taiwan, Korea, Japan, and Hong Kong. The magnitude and direction of trend in the incidence of young-onset CRC (age < 50) were quantified using Joinpoint Regression Program to estimate average annual percentage change (AAPC).
In Taiwan (1995-2014), incidence of young-onset CRC significantly increased in both men (colon cancer: 4.9-9.7 per 100,000; rectal cancer: 4.0-8.3 per 100,000) and women (colon cancer: 5.1-9.7 per 100,000; rectal cancer: 3.8-6.4 per 100,000). In Korea (1999-2014), incidence of young-onset CRC significantly increased in both men (colon cancer: 5.0-10.4 per 100,000; rectal cancer: 4.9-14.0 per 100,000) and women (colon cancer: 4.1-9.6 per 100,000; rectal cancer: 4.1-9.1 per 100,000). The most pronounced change was observed with male rectal cancer, increasing by 3.9% per year in Taiwan (AAPC + 3.9, 95% confidence interval + 3.3 to +4.5, P < 0.05) and 6.0% per year in Korea (AAPC +6.0, 95% confidence interval + 4.5 to +7.6, P < 0.05). Only a significant increase in rectal cancer was noted in Japan (male rectal cancer: 7.2-10.1 per 100,000, female rectal cancer 4.7-6.7 per 100,000) and Hong Kong (male rectal cancer: 4.4-7.0 per 100,000).
Increasing trend in young-onset CRC is not limited to the Western world. This finding may have implications on screening program for CRC in these countries/regions.
Translational control at the initiation step has been recognized as a major and important regulatory mechanism of gene expression. Eukaryotic initiation factor-3a (eIF3a), a putative subunit of the ...eIF3 complex, has recently been shown to have an important role in regulating the translation of a subset of mRNAs and is found to correlate with the prognosis of cancers. In this study, using nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) cells as a model system, we tested the hypothesis that eIF3a negatively regulates the synthesis of nucleotide excision repair (NER) proteins, and, in turn, cellular response to treatments with DNA-damaging agents such as cisplatin (cis-dichlorodiammine platinum(II) (CDDP)). We found that a CDDP-sensitive sub-clone S16 isolated through limited dilution from an NPC cell line CNE-2 has increased eIF3a expression. Knocking down its expression in S16 cells increased cellular resistance to CDDP, NER activity and synthesis of the NER proteins XPA, XPC, RAD23B and RPA32. Altering eIF3a expression also changed the cellular response to CDDP and UV treatment in other NPC cell lines. Taken together, we conclude that eIF3a has an important role in the CDDP response and in NER activity of NPCs by suppressing the synthesis of NER proteins.
