Just look what happened to the West Edmonton Mall dolphins, fancy tropical birds and fishes. Those are as popular as their owners can hope for and funding is not a problem. Yet overall public sentiment is against them and these exhibits will likely be removed when their denizens die off. Mayor Bill Smith got it right when he said that zoos have seen their day and should be phased out. There is realistically no place the Valley Zoo can go except down and we already have good examples in Al Oeming's Wildlife Park and the defunct Alberta Wildlife Park.

Such a project would cost less than $2 million to implement and should qualify for federal/provincial grants for tourism development or parkland improvement. It would be old style in appearance only but would have all the modern safety features hidden under traditional materials.
