This study was conducted in the city of Bauru, São Paulo State, Brazil (n = 970). Television (TV) viewing and physical activity (PA) were assessed by questionnaire. MetS was assessed via medical records. Descriptive statistics and binary logistic regression were used in data analyses.
Participants with moderate TV viewing were associated with MetS when compared with low TV viewing group, even after adjustments for age, sex, economic status, smoking, and PA (odds ratio OR = 1.49 95% confidence interval {CI}: 1.01–2.20). The fully adjusted model showed an association between high exposure to TV viewing with MetS (OR = 1.77 95%CI: 1.11–2.82). The combination of physical inactivity and high TV viewing boosted the likelihood of having MetS (OR = 1.89 95%CI: 1.08–3.29).
The results of the present study suggest that moderate and high TV viewing time is associated with the presence of MetS, mainly in insufficiently active adults and those living in lower economic condition.

The objective of this trial was to characterize the assemblage structure of fruit flies (Diptera: Tephritidae) by determining the diversity and faunal indices. Fruit flies were collected for ten ...years between 2003 and 2015 in six municipalities of the Metropolitan Region of Curitiba, Paraná. The orchards were divided into three crop protection strategies: organic, conventional, and integrated pest management. The characteristic of each community was determined using the Shannon-Wiener, Margalef, and Pielou's indexes. The frequency, constancy, and dominance indexes were also determined. Biological material was analyzed using the explanatory variables: site, crop, plant protection strategy, and susceptibility period. A total of 8,089 fruit flies were collected, of which 4,681 were females. The species Anastrepha daciformis Bezzi, A. dissimilis Stone, A. distincta Greene and A. pickeli Lima were recorded for the first time in Paraná State, the occurrence of three other species was recorded for the first time in the Metropolitan Region of Curitiba (A. montei Lima, A. obliqua Macquart, and A. sororcula Zucchi), in addition A. fraterculus (Wiedemann), A. grandis (Macquart) and Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann). A. fraterculus accounted for 98.5% of the collected species. Only A. fraterculus and A. sororcula were found in fruits. Fruit flies occurred predominantly in peach trees cultivated under organic conditions. The Shannon index indicated that the municipality of Cerro Azul had the highest diversity and richness whereas apple orchards had the lowest diversity. Crops cultivated under organic conditions exhibited the highest diversity whereas those cultivated under conventional conditions had the highest evenness index. The largest specimens number was collected during the period of crop susceptibility.
This paper proposes a two-stage high-order intrablock prediction method for light field image coding. This method exploits the spatial redundancy in lenslet light field images by predicting each ...image block, through a geometric transformation applied to a region of the causal encoded area. Light field images comprise an array of microimages that are related by complex geometric transformations that cannot be efficiently compensated by state-of-the-art image coding techniques, which are usually based on low-order translational prediction models. The two-stage nature of the proposed method allows us to choose the order of the prediction model most suitable for each block, ranging from pure translations to projective or bilinear transformations, optimized according to an appropriate rate-distortion criterion. The proposed higher order intrablock prediction approach was integrated into a high efficiency video coding (HEVC) codec and evaluated for both unfocused and focused light field camera models, using different resolutions and microlens arrays. Experimental results show consistent bitrate savings, which can go up to 12.62%, when compared to a lower order intrablock prediction solution and 49.82% when compared to HEVC still picture coding.
Aim
To evaluate the effect of the addition of surfactants to sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) on the removal of accumulated hard tissue debris (AHTD), before and after final irrigation with 17% EDTA, from ...mesial canals of mandibular molars through microcomputed tomographic (micro‐CT) analysis.
Methodology
Thirty moderately curved mandibular mesial roots with Vertucci type II canal configuration were selected and scanned in a micro‐CT device at an isotropic resolution of 22.9 μm. The specimens were assigned to three groups (n = 10) with respect to the root length, degree of curvature of the mesial root, volume and 3D anatomy of the root canals according to the irrigating solution used during root canal preparation: 2.5% NaOCl and 0.1% Benzalkonium Chloride, 2.5% NaOCl and 0.1% Tween 80 and 2.5% NaOCl without additives. The root canals were instrumented up to Reciproc R25 instrument. Then, the specimens were scanned again after canal preparation and after final irrigation with 17% EDTA, and the registered data sets were examined to evaluate the percentage of AHTD. For comparison between the different groups before and after using 17% EDTA, the Kruskal–Wallis test was used with a significance level of 5%. For comparison between the same groups before and after using 17% EDTA, the Wilcoxon test was used with a significance level of 5%.
Results
None of the irrigant solutions tested was able to completely eliminate hard tissue debris from mesial canals of mandibular molars. There were no significant differences in the percentage of AHTD amongst the different irrigation solutions (P > 0.05). Final irrigation with 17% EDTA significantly reduced the percentage of AHTD (P < 0.05), without differences amongst the groups (P > 0.05).
Conclusions
The addition of surfactants to NaOCl did not affect the removal of AHTD from mesial canals of extracted mandibular molars. Final irrigation with 17% EDTA significantly improved AHTD removal.
The distribution of metals and metalloids among particulate, dissolved, colloidal, free, and labile forms in natural waters is of great environmental concern since it determines their transportation ...behaviour and bioavailability. Organic matter can have an important role for this distribution process, since it is an important complexing agent and ubiquitous in the aquatic environment. We studied the distribution, mobility and bioavailability of Al, As and Fe in natural waters of a mining area (Quadrilátero Ferrífero, Brazil) and the influence of organic matter in these processes. Water samples were taken from 12 points during the dry and rainy seasons, filtrated at 0.45 μm and ultrafiltrated (<1 kDa) to separate the particulate, colloidal and free fractions. Diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT) were deployed at 5 sampling points to study the labile part of the elements. Total and dissolved organic carbon and the physicochemical parameters were measured along with the sampling. The results of ultrafiltration (UF) and DGT were compared. The relationship among the variables was studied through multivariate analysis (Kohonen neural network), which showed that the seasonality did not impact most of the samples. Fe and Al occurred mainly in the particulate fraction whereas As appeared more in the free fraction. Most of the dissolved Fe and Al were inert (colloidal form) while As was more labile and bioavailable. The results showed that sampling points with a higher quantity of complexed Fe (colloidal fraction) showed less labile As, which may indicate formation of ternary complexes among organic matter, As and Fe.

The Feline Grimace Scale (FGS) is a facial expression-based scoring system for acute pain assessment in cats with reported validity using image assessment. The aims of this study were to investigate ...the clinical applicability of the FGS in real-time when compared with image assessment, and to evaluate the influence of sedation and surgery on FGS scores in cats.
Sixty-five female cats (age: 1.37 ± 0.9 years and body weight: 2.85 ± 0.76 kg) were included in a prospective, randomized, clinical trial. Cats were sedated with intramuscular acepromazine and buprenorphine. Following induction with propofol, anesthesia was maintained with isoflurane and cats underwent ovariohysterectomy (OVH). Pain was evaluated at baseline, 15 min after sedation, and at 0.5, 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12 and 24 h after extubation using the FGS in real-time (FGS-RT). Cats were video-recorded simultaneously at baseline, 15 min after sedation, and at 2, 6, 12, and 24 h after extubation for subsequent image assessment (FGS-IMG), which was performed six months later by the same observer. The agreement between FGS-RT and FGS-IMG scores was calculated using the Bland & Altman method for repeated measures. The effects of sedation (baseline versus 15 min) and OVH (baseline versus 24 h) were assessed using linear mixed models. Responsiveness to the administration of rescue analgesia (FGS scores before versus one hour after) was assessed using paired
-tests.
Minimal bias (-0.057) and narrow limits of agreement (-0.351 to 0.237) were observed between the FGS-IMG and FGS-RT. Scores at baseline (FGS-RT: 0.16 ± 0.13 and FGS-IMG: 0.14 ± 0.13) were not different after sedation (FGS-RT: 0.2 ± 0.15,
= 0.39 and FGS-IMG: 0.16 ± 0.15,
= 0.99) nor at 24 h after extubation (FGS-RT: 0.16 ± 0.12,
= 0.99 and FGS-IMG: 0.12 ± 0.12,
= 0.96). Thirteen cats required rescue analgesia; their FGS scores were lower one hour after analgesic administration (FGS-RT: 0.21 ± 0.18 and FGS-IMG: 0.18 ± 0.17) than before (FGS-RT: 0.47 ± 0.24,

Real-time assessment slightly overestimates image scoring; however, with minimal clinical impact. Sedation with acepromazine-buprenorphine and ovariohysterectomy using a balanced anesthetic protocol did not influence the FGS scores. Responsiveness to analgesic administration was observed with both the FGS-RT and FGS-IMG.
Malnutrition constitutes a major public health concern worldwide and serves as an indicator of hospitalized patients' prognosis. Although various methods with which to conduct nutritional assessments ...exist, large hospitals seldom employ them to diagnose malnutrition. The aim of this study was to understand the prevalence of child malnutrition at the University Hospital of the Ribeirão Preto Medical School, University of São, Brazil. A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted to compare the nutritional status of 292 hospitalized children with that of a healthy control group (n=234). Information regarding patients' weight, height, and bioelectrical impedance (i.e., bioelectrical impedance vector analysis) was obtained, and the phase angle was calculated. Using the World Health Organization (WHO) criteria, 35.27% of the patients presented with malnutrition; specifically, 16.10% had undernutrition and 19.17% were overweight. Classification according to the bioelectrical impedance results of nutritional status was more sensitive than the WHO criteria: of the 55.45% of patients with malnutrition, 51.25% exhibited undernutrition and 4.20% were overweight. After applying the WHO criteria in the unpaired control group (n=234), we observed that 100.00% of the subjects were eutrophic; however, 23.34% of the controls were malnourished according to impedance analysis. The phase angle was significantly lower in the hospitalized group than in the control group (P<0.05). Therefore, this study suggests that a protocol to obtain patients' weight and height must be followed, and bioimpedance data must be examined upon hospital admission of all children.
Metagenomic studies unravel details about the taxonomic composition and the functions performed by microbial communities. As a complete metagenomic analysis requires different tools for different ...purposes, the selection and setup of these tools remain challenging. Furthermore, the chosen toolset will affect the accuracy, the formatting, and the functional identifiers reported in the results, impacting the results interpretation and the biological answer obtained. Thus, we surveyed state-of-the-art tools available in the literature, created simulated datasets, and performed benchmarks to design a sensitive and flexible metagenomic analysis pipeline. Here we present MEDUSA, an efficient pipeline to conduct comprehensive metagenomic analyses. It performs preprocessing, assembly, alignment, taxonomic classification, and functional annotation on shotgun data, supporting user-built dictionaries to transfer annotations to any functional identifier. MEDUSA includes several tools, as fastp, Bowtie2, DIAMOND, Kaiju, MEGAHIT, and a novel tool implemented in Python to transfer annotations to BLAST/DIAMOND alignment results. These tools are installed via Conda, and the workflow is managed by Snakemake, easing the setup and execution. Compared with MEGAN 6 Community Edition, MEDUSA correctly identifies more species, especially the less abundant, and is more suited for functional analysis using Gene Ontology identifiers.

The Southern Ocean greatly contributes to the regulation of the global climate by controlling important heat and carbon exchanges between the atmosphere and the ocean. Rates of climate change on ...decadal timescales are therefore impacted by oceanic processes taking place in the Southern Ocean, yet too little is known about these processes. Limitations come both from the lack of observations in this extreme environment and its inherent sensitivity to intermittent processes at scales that are not well captured in current Earth system models. The Southern Ocean Carbon and Heat Impact on Climate programme was launched to address this knowledge gap, with the overall objective to understand and quantify variability of heat and carbon budgets in the Southern Ocean through an investigation of the key physical processes controlling exchanges between the atmosphere, ocean and sea ice using a combination of observational and modelling approaches. Here, we provide a brief overview of the programme, as well as a summary of some of the scientific progress achieved during its first half. Advances range from new evidence of the importance of specific processes in Southern Ocean ventilation rate (e.g. storm-induced turbulence, sea-ice meltwater fronts, wind-induced gyre circulation, dense shelf water formation and abyssal mixing) to refined descriptions of the physical changes currently ongoing in the Southern Ocean and of their link with global climate. This article is part of a discussion meeting issue 'Heat and carbon uptake in the Southern Ocean: the state of the art and future priorities'.
Mo-CBP3 is a chitin-binding 2S albumin from Moringa oleifera. This seed storage protein is resistant to thermal denaturation and shows biological activities that might be of practical use, such as ...antifungal properties against Candida sp., a pathogen that causes candidiasis, and against Fusarium solani, a soil fungus that can cause diseases in plants and humans. Previous work has demonstrated that Mo-CBP3 is a mixture of isoforms encoded by members of a small multigene family. Mature Mo-CBP3 is a small protein (∼14 kDa), constituted by a small chain of approximately 4 kDa and a large chain of 8 kDa, which are held together by disulfide bridges. However, a more comprehensive picture on the spectrum of Mo-CBP3 isoforms which are found in mature seeds, is still lacking. In this work, genomic DNA fragments were obtained from M. oleifera leaves, cloned and completely sequenced, thus revealing new genes encoding Mo-CBP3. Moreover, mass spectrometry analysis showed that the mature protein is a complex mixture of isoforms with a remarkable number of molecular mass variants. Using computational predictions and calculations, most (∼86%) of the experimentally determined masses were assigned to amino acid sequences deduced from DNA fragments. The results suggested that the complex mixture of Mo-CBP3 isoforms originates from proteins encoded by closely related genes, whose products undergo different combinations of distinct post-translational modifications, including cleavage at the N- and C-terminal ends of both subunits, cyclization of N-terminal Gln, as well as Pro hydroxylation, Ser/Thr phosphorylation, and Met oxidation.
