An outbreak of field rickets in turkeys prompted studies on the cause. In Experiment 1, there were four treatments with two replicate pens of 10 poults per pen. The treatments consisted of poults fed ...newly manufactured feed (control), poults fed a diet containing control feed and 5% clean litter, poults fed control feed and 5% litter from the pens of affected poults, and poults challenged with an intestinal homogenate by gavage. Field rickets did not develop with these treatments. The feed was suspect, and, in Experiment 2, poults were either fed the suspect feed or newly manufactured feed. There were four replicate pens of 25 poults per pen. Poults fed the suspect feed had a decrease (P < or = 0.05) in BW at 1, 2, 3, and 4 wk of age; an increase in the relative weight of the liver, pancreas, kidney, and bursa of Fabricius; and a decrease in bone ash. There were changes in clinical chemistries. In the third study, there were five dietary treatments with two replicate pens of 25 poults per treatment. The treatments consisted of poults fed newly manufactured feed; new feed mixed with 25, 50, or 75% suspect feed; or 100% suspect feed. Body weights of poults fed 100% suspect feed were decreased at 2, 3, and 4 wk as was the relative weight of the liver, pancreas, and bursa of Fabricius. The relative weight of the kidney increased. Lameness, a decrease in bone ash, and changes in hematology and blood chemistry were observed in the poults consuming 100% suspect feed. These data demonstrate that feed from the original outbreak could induce field rickets and was toxic. Because the feed contained adequate vitamin D, calcium, and phosphorus, the cause of this outbreak of field rickets is thought to be a toxic feed contaminant affecting bone development.
Objective The objective of this study was to compare the safety, use, and cost profiles of open thoracotomy vs video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) for wedge resection in lung cancer performed ...by thoracic surgeons in the United States. Methods The Premier database, which contains complete patient billing, hospital cost, and coding histories from > 25 million inpatient discharges and > 175 million hospital outpatient visits, was used for this analysis. Eligible patients were those who underwent wedge resection by a thoracic surgeon for cancer diagnosis or treatment through open thoracotomy or VATS in 2007 or 2008. Multivariable logistic regression analyses were run for binary outcomes, and ordinary least squares regressions were used for continuous outcomes. All models were adjusted for patient demographics, comorbid conditions, and hospital characteristics. Results Of 8,228 eligible procedures, 2,051 patients underwent wedge resections by a thoracic surgeon using the open technique (n = 999) or VATS (n = 1,052). Hospital costs remained significantly higher for open wedge resections than for VATS ($17,377 vs $14,795, P = .000). Surgery time was significantly longer for open resections vs VATS (3.16 vs 2.82 h). Length of stay was 6.34 days for open vs 4.44 days for VATS. Adverse events were significant in the multivariable analysis, with an OR of 1.57 (95% CI, 1.29-1.91) in favor of VATS. Conclusions Although this retrospective database analysis could not address the issue of oncologic outcome equivalence, a clear advantage of VATS over open wedge lung cancer resection was found for both acute clinical outcomes and hospital costs.
Feed provision is one of the greatest costs of beef production and, with the increasing costs of feed, will remain so for the foreseeable future. Improvement in efficiency has the potential to not ...only increase profits for cattle producers, but also to decrease the environmental footprint of beef cattle production. Both are important in addressing the challenges of increasing feed costs and land pressure. Residual feed intake (RFI) has increasingly become the measure of choice when evaluating feed efficiency in beef cattle, especially because it is independent of growth and BW. The main inhibitor to adoption of RFI remains the cost and technical difficulty in measuring the trait. This makes RFI a prime candidate for marker-assisted selection because the trait is moderately heritable and DNA or other predictive markers could be used in selection schemes. Although multiple markers have been described over several studies, no major gene affecting RFI has been found. However, a combination of genetic markers, when examined jointly, can explain a large proportion of the genetic variation. Two main barriers remain before full adoption of markers for genetic evaluation and marker-assisted selection can be implemented. First, the genetic interaction of genes affecting RFI on other traits is, as yet, not fully understood. Second the numbers of animals with high quality estimates of RFI remains small. However, current developments indicate that these challenges will soon be overcome.

Factor V stored in platelets is an important source of factor Va for the prothrombinase complex. Investigations of potential platelet factor Va-binding proteins, using factor Va light chain affinity ...chromatography, identified a disulfide-linked multimeric protein with a reduced mobility of 155 kDa in the column eluate. Immunodepletion and immunoblotting indicated that this protein was multimerin. Multimerin specifically bound factors V and Va and the isolated factor Va light chain, but not the heavy chain of factor Va. Factor V stored in platelets, but not plasma factor V, was found to be complexed with multimerin. Multimerin immunodepletion of resting platelet lysates was associated with the removal of factor V and the loss of factor V coagulant activity. Immunoelectron microscopic studies colocalized factor V with multimerin in the alpha-granules of resting platelets. With thrombin-induced platelet activation, we observed dissociation of factor Va-multimerin complexes, multimerin-independent membrane binding of factor Va, and prothrombinase activity that was not inhibitable by multimerin antibodies. This study indicates that platelet factor V is stored as a complex with multimerin and suggests a possible role for multimerin as a carrier protein for factor V stored in platelets.
Anaphylaxis is an acute and potentially lethal multisystem allergic reaction that occurs in a variety of clinical scenarios and is almost unavoidable. Immunologic reactions to medications, foods, and ...insect stings cause most episodes, but virtually any substance capable of inducing systemic degranulation of mast cells and basophils can produce anaphylaxis. All health care professionals must be able to recognize anaphylaxis promptly, be prepared to treat it appropriately, and be able to provide preventive recommendations. Similarly, at-risk individuals must be prepared to self-treat anaphylaxis promptly if prevention fails.
Lip cancer (140 ICD-9, C00 ICD-10) is a form of oral cancer occurring at the junction between the oral cavity and the skin. Lip cancer has a distinctive global epidemiology that is notably different ...from cancer occurring at other intraoral sites. This study reviews and analyses the epidemiological data for lip cancer from the South Australian Central Cancer Registry between 1977 and 1996. During this 20-year period, 2716 cases of lip cancer (2095 male, 621 female) and 35 deaths from this disease (23 males, 12 females) were reported. The average age of diagnosis was 58.3 years in males and 66.0 years in females. Very high age-standardised incidence rates (over 15.0 per 100000 per annum in males and 4.0 per 100000 per annum in females) were found, giving the South Australian population amongst the highest incidence of lip cancer in the world. Also of considerable concern was the finding that, contrary to global trends, these rates showed a significant increase over the 20-year period in both sexes. Possible reasons for these findings are discussed.
