By means of a new CO2 laser we performed a new investigation of the far-infrared laser emission spectrum of hydrazine excited by the 10P(32) and 10R(8) CO2 laser lines. We found seven new lines and ...measured the frequency of four of them; moreover we measured the frequencies of two more lines previously reported in the literature with only wavelength measurements. The frequencies of the far-infrared laser emissions have been measured by means of a frequency-synthesis chain based on new InP Schottky diodes. The detected signal was beat-note generated in a Schottky diode between the far-infrared radiation, the harmonics of a 72 GHz frequency reference and a rf signal. We also characterized all of the observed lines by their polarization relative to the pumping CO2 laser, the optimum pressure and the offset relative to the CO2 center frequency.
The aims of this study were to disseminate, assess agreement with, assess the application of and identify potential barriers for implementation of the European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR) ...recommendations for the role of nurses in the management of chronic inflammatory arthritis (CIA) using a survey of nurses, rheumatologists and patients.
A Web-based survey was distributed across Europe and the USA using snowball sampling. Levels of agreement and application were assessed using a 0-10 rating scale (0 = none, 10 = full agreement/application). Reasons for disagreement and potential barriers to application of each recommendation were sought. Regional differences with respect to agreement and application were explored.
In total, 967 nurses, 548 rheumatologists and 2034 patients from 23 countries participated in the survey. Median level of agreement was high in all three groups, ranging from 8 to 10 per recommendation. Median level of application was substantially lower, ranging from 0 to 8 per recommendation. Agreement and application were lowest in Eastern and Central Europe. The most commonly reported reasons for incomplete agreement were too many other responsibilities (nurses), doubts about knowledge of the nurse (rheumatologists) and fear of losing contact with the rheumatologist (patients). The most commonly reported barriers to the application were time constraints and unavailability of service. Rheumatologists responses suggested that nurses had insufficient knowledge to provide the recommended care.
The EULAR recommendations for the role of nurses in the management of CIA have been disseminated among nurses, rheumatologists and patients across Europe and the USA. Agreement with these recommendations is high, but application is lower and differed across regions.
The performances of metal-semiconductor point-contact diodes as mixers in the near-infrared region were tested. Preliminary experiments were performed in order to phase-lock two diode lasers at 850 ...nm a few hundred gigahertz apart. GaSb, InAs, and InSb as semiconductor layers were used. The frequency bridge between the two lasers was covered by a Gunn diode frequency locked to a 1-GHz oscillator. A novel phase-lock circuit was tested on two diode lasers 72 GHz apart.
We evaluated by immunohistochemistry the expression of the Bcl-2 and p53 proteins, as markers of apoptosis control, and of MIB-1, as a marker of cell proliferation, in a series of normal and ...neoplastic adrenocortical tissues. The specimens were 13 normal adrenals, 13 aldosterone-producing adenomas, 13 non-functioning adenomas and 16 carcinomas. Results were calculated as percentage of immunostained cells by using specific antibodies. No p53 protein was detected in any of the adrenocortical adenomas (functioning and non functioning) or normal adrenals, while p53 was overexpressed in 15 out of 16 carcinomas. In particular, 10 adrenal cancer specimens (62.5%) showed strong staining in a high percentage (range 10-50%) of the malignant cells. The percentage of Bcl-2 positive cells was higher (P<0.05 or less) in non-functioning adenomas (8.1+/-1.9%) and in carcinomas (14.9+/-5.6%) than in normals (2.9+/-0.9%) and aldosterone-producing adenomas (5.3+/-1.3%) since four specimens of the non-functioning adenomas-group (30.7%) and six of the carcinomas-group (37.5%) showed over 10% positivity (cut-off for normal values, set at 90th percentile of our controls). MIB-1 positivity was 0.50+/-0.36% in normals, 0.54+/-0.08% in non-functioning adenomas and 0.54+/-0.08% in aldosterone-producing adenomas. MIB-1 was expressed in all carcinomas with values (13.7+/-3.1%) significantly (P<0.0006) higher than in the other groups. In conclusion, the present data indicate that the apoptosis control and proliferation activity evaluated by the p53 and MIB-1 proteins are impaired in adrenal carcinomas but preserved in adenomas, independently of their functional status. Therefore, these immunohistochemical markers, overexpressed in carcinomas only, may be useful in the diagnosis of malignancy in adrenocortical tumours. Whether Bcl-2 positivity found in some carcinomas and non-functioning adenomas may constitute, in the latter, a negative prognostic marker is still unknown.

Objectives: The use of endothelial progenitor cells in vascular therapies has been limited due to their low numbers present in the bone marrow and peripheral blood. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of sphingosine kinase on the de‐differentiation of mature human endothelial cells toward a progenitor phenotype.
Methods: The lipid enzyme sphingosine kinase‐1 was lentivirally over‐expressed in human umbilical vein endothelial cells and cells were analyzed for progenitor phenotype and function.
Results: Sphingosine kinase‐1 mRNA expression was induced approximately 150‐fold with a resultant 20‐fold increase in sphingosine kinase‐1 enzymatic activity. The mRNA expression of the progenitor cell markers CD34, CD133, and CD117 and transcription factor NANOG increased, while the endothelial cell markers analyzed were largely unchanged. The protein level of mature endothelial cell surface markers CD31, CD144, and von Willebrand factor significantly decreased compared to controls. In addition, functional assays provided further evidence for a de‐differentiated phenotype with increased viability, reduced uptake of acetylated low‐density lipoprotein and decreased tube formation in Matrigel in the cells over‐expressing sphingosine kinase‐1.
Conclusions: These findings suggest that over‐expression of sphingosine kinase‐1 in human endothelial cells promotes, in part, their de‐differentiation to a progenitor cell phenotype, and is thus a potential tool for the generation of a large population of vascular progenitor cells for therapeutic use.
To assess the potential for mating in several Fusarium species with no known sexual stage, we developed degenerate and semidegenerate oligonucleotide primers to identify conserved mating type (MAT) ...sequences in these fungi. The putative and high-mobility-group (HMG) box sequences from Fusarium avenaceum, F. culmorum, F. poae, and F. semitectum were compared to similar sequences that were described previously for other members of the genus. The DNA sequences of the regions flanking the amplified MAT regions were obtained by inverse PCR. These data were used to develop diagnostic primers suitable for the clear amplification of conserved mating type sequences from any member of the genus Fusarium. By using these diagnostic primers, we identified mating types of 122 strains belonging to 22 species of Fusarium. The box and the HMG box from the mating type genes are transcribed in F. avenaceum, F. culmorum, F. poae, and F. semitectum. The novelty of the PCR-based mating type identification system that we developed is that this method can be used on a wide range of Fusarium species, which have proven or expected teleomorphs in different ascomycetous genera, including Calonectria, Gibberella, and Nectria.
