Men who have sex with men (MSM) are at increased risk of exposure to hepatitis B virus (HBV) compared with the general population. This study aims to assess the epidemiological and virological ...characteristics of HBV infection in a sample of MSM in Brazil, where data are scarce.
A cross-sectional study was conducted among MSM in the City of Goiânia, Central Brazil, from March to November 2014, using Respondent-Driven Sampling (RDS). After signing the consent form, participants were interviewed and a blood sample collected. All samples were tested for HBV serological markers and HBV DNA. HBV nucleotide sequence analysis was also performed.
A total of 522 MSM were recruited in the study. The prevalence of HBV infection (current or past presence of anti-HBc marker) was 15.4% (95% CI: 8.7-25.8) and the rate of HBsAg carriers was 0.6% (95% CI: 0.2-1.6). About 40% (95% CI: 32.3-48.8) of the participants had serological evidence of previous HBV vaccination (reactive for isolated anti-HBs). In addition, 44.3% (95% CI: 36.1-52.9) were seronegative for all HBV markers. Age over 25 years old, receptive anal intercourse, previous sex with women, and history of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) were factors associated with HBV infection. HBV DNA was detected only in HBsAg-positive individuals. HBV isolates were classified into genotype A (subgenotypes A1 and A2), and some mutations were identified throughout the genome. Therefore, occult HBV infection was not observed in the study population.
Public health strategies should be improved for the MSM population in order to prevent HBV and other STIs, as well as to provide appropriate management of patients with active infections.

The effects of several parameters on the reactions were tested, such as reagent concentration, volume, aspiration order, and reaction time, and the best ones were selected to maximise accuracy and quickness in the execution of the enzymatic assay. Finally, the methodology presented detection and quantification limits of 0.193 mM and 0.642 mM, respectively, allowing accurate and reliable quantification of lactate in human plasma samples. This work confirmed the potential of the SIA system as a simple, versatile, robust, and rapid analytical tool for automating the determination of lactate levels.

Previous analyses of the Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Adult Health (ELSA-Brasil) identified four main dietary patterns (DP). The aim of this study was to explore the association between the ...previously defined DP and renal function (RF). A cross-sectional study using the ELSA-Brasil baseline data was carried out. DP ("traditional", "fruits and vegetables", "bakery", and "low sugar/low fat), metabolic syndrome (MS) using the Joint Interim Statement criteria, microalbuminuria (MA), and glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) through the CKD-EPI equation were evaluated. Abnormal RF was defined as eGFR<60 mL·min-1·(1.73 m2)-1 and MA≥3.0 mg/dL. Factors associated with RF were determined and mediation analysis was performed to investigate the association between DP, MS, and RF. A total of 15,105 participants were recruited, with a mean age of 52±9 years; 8,134 participants (54%) were females. The mediation analysis identified indirect associations between "bakery" and "fruits and vegetables", and both were associated with decreased eGFR and albuminuria in both genders, compared with "traditional" and "low sugar/low fat" patterns in the general population. There was a direct association of the "bakery" pattern with MA in men (OR: 1.17, 95%CI: 1.92-1.48). The "fruits and vegetables" pattern also showed a direct association with reduced eGFR in women (OR: 1.65, 95%CI: 1.28-2.12), although there was no significance after adjustment. The "fruits and vegetables" and "bakery" DPs were associated with renal dysfunction. The only independent, direct association was between "bakery" DP and MA in men, raising concerns about DP and renal damage in men.
Tris(pyrazolyl)methane (tpm), 2,2,2-tris(pyrazolyl)ethanol (tpmOH) and its esterification derivatives with ibuprofen and flurbiprofen (tpmIBU and tpmFLU) were used as ligands to obtain complexes of ...the type Fe(tpm X ) 2 Cl 2 (1–4). The tpmIBU and tpmFLU ligands and corresponding complexes 3 and 4 were characterized by IR and multinuclear NMR spectroscopy, and the structure of tpmIBU was elucidated by single crystal X-ray diffraction. Complexes 1–4 were also assessed for their behaviour in aqueous media (solubility in D 2 O, octanol/water partition coefficient, stability in physiological-like conditions). The antiproliferative activity of ligands and complexes was determined on A2780, A2780cis and A549 cancer cell lines and the non-cancerous HEK 293T and BJ cell lines. The ligands and complexes were investigated for their ability to inhibit COX-2 (cyclooxygenase) and HNE (4-hydroxynonenal) enzymes. Complexes 3 and 4 exhibited cytotoxicity that may be attributed predominantly to their bioactive fragments, while DNA binding and enhancement of ROS production do not appear to play any significant role.

In most cases, the defect caused a structural phase transition in the lizardite from the trigonal (pristine) to the triclinic phase. The results show that oxygen vacancies in lizardite significantly reduce the lattice thermal conductivity, accompanied by an elastic moduli reduction and an anisotropy index increase. Through the

relation, an increase in compressibility was evidenced for vacancy configurations. Except for the vacancy with the same crystalline structure as pristine lizardite, the sound velocities of the other vacancy configurations produce a decrease in these velocities, and it is essential to highlight high values for the Grüneisen parameter. We emphasize the great relevance of the punctual-defects introduction, such as O vacancies, in lizardite, since this microstructural design is responsible for the decrease of the lattice thermal conductivity in comparison with the pristine system by decreasing the heat transfer ability, turning lizardite into a promising candidate for thermoelectric materials
The aim of this study is the development of an automated method for myeloperoxidase activity evaluation and its application in testing the inhibitory action of different plant extracts on the ...activity of the enzyme. This enzyme has its concentration increased in inflammatory and infectious processes, so it is a possible target to limit these processes. Therefore, an automatic sequential in-jection analysis (SIA) system was optimized and demonstrated that it is possible to obtain results with satisfactory accuracy and precision. With the developed method, plant extracts were studied, as promising candidates for MPO inhibition. In the group of selected plant extracts, IC50 values from 0.029 ± 0.002 mg/mL to 35.4 ± 3.5 mg/mL were obtained.
L. proved to be the most inhibitory extract for MPO based on its phenolic compound content. The coupling of an automatic SIA method to MPO inhibition assays is a good alternative to other conventional methods, due to its simplicity and speed. This work also supports the pharmacological use of these species that inhibit MPO, and exhibit activity that may be related to the treatment of infection and inflammation.
(1) Background: Post-stroke presents motor function deficits, and one interesting possibility for practicing skills is the concept of bilateral transfer. Additionally, there is evidence that the use ...of virtual reality is beneficial in improving upper limb function. We aimed to evaluate the transfer of motor performance of post-stroke and control groups in two different environments (real and virtual), as well as bilateral transfer, by changing the practice between paretic and non-paretic upper limbs. (2) Methods: We used a coincident timing task with a virtual (Kinect) or a real device (touch screen) in post-stroke and control groups; both groups practiced with bilateral transference. (3) Results: Were included 136 participants, 82 post-stroke and 54 controls. The control group presented better performance during most parts of the protocol; however, it was more evident when compared with the post-stroke paretic upper limb. We found bilateral transference mainly in Practice 2, with the paretic upper limb using the real interface method (touch screen), but only after Practice 1 with the virtual interface (Kinect), using the non-paretic upper limb. (4) Conclusions: The task with the greatest motor and cognitive demand (virtual-Kinect) provided transfer into the real interface, and bilateral transfer was observed in individuals post-stroke. However, this is more strongly observed when the virtual task was performed using the non-paretic upper limb first.
Chronic wounds (CW) present a significant healthcare challenge due to their prolonged healing time and associated complications. To effectively treat these wounds and prevent further deterioration, ...monitoring their healing progress is crucial. Traditional wound assessment methods relying on visual inspection and subjective evaluation are prone to inter-observer variability. Biomarkers play a critical role in objectively evaluating wound status and predicting healing outcomes, providing quantitative measures of wound healing progress, inflammation, infection, and tissue regeneration. Recent attention has been devoted to identifying and validating CW biomarkers. Various studies have investigated potential biomarkers, including growth factors, cytokines, proteases, and extracellular matrix components, shedding light on the complex molecular and cellular processes within CW. This knowledge enables a more targeted and personalized approach to wound management. Accurate and sensitive techniques are necessary for detecting CW biomarkers. Thus, this review compares and discusses the use of electrochemical and optical sensors for biomarker determination. The advantages and disadvantages of these sensors are highlighted. Differences in detection capabilities and characteristics such as non-invasiveness, portability, high sensitivity, specificity, simplicity, cost-effectiveness, compatibility with point-of-care applications, and real-time monitoring of wound biomarkers will be pointed out and compared. In summary, this work provides an overview of CW, explores the emerging field of CW biomarkers, and discusses methods for detecting these biomarkers, with a specific focus on optical and electrochemical sensors. The potential of further research and development in this field for advancing wound care and improving patient outcomes will also be noted.

Citral (CIT) is a monoterpene formed by the geranial and neral stereoisomers. CIT is the major compound of Cymbopogon citratus essential oil, commonly known as “lemongrass”, and has demonstrated ...potential antihyperalgesic, anti-nociceptive and anti-inflammatory effects. However, CIT shows high volatility, low solubility in water and consequent low bioavailability, which limits its use. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate cell viability, anti-hyperalgesic and anti-inflammatory effects of inclusion complexes of CIT on β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) and hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HP-β-CD). Initially, physical mixture (PM) and freeze-dried inclusion (FD) complexes of CIT/β-CD and CIT/HP-β-CD were obtained in the molar ratio (1:1). The samples were characterized by DSC, TG/DTG, FT-IR, XRD, SEM and the complexation efficiency were performed by HPLC. Cell viability assay was performed by rezasurin reduction technique in J774 macrophages cell line. The motor activity through rota rod apparatus, mechanical hyperalgesia and pleurisy induced by carrageenan were evaluated in mice. The complexation of CIT was evidenced with β-CD and HP-β-CD by the characterization techniques analyzed. The complexation efficiency of CIT/β-CD and CIT/HP-β-CD were 78.6% and 71.7%, respectively. The CIT, CIT/β-CD and CIT/HP-β-CD showed cell viability in macrophages and did not interfere in the motor activity of mice. Besides that, the samples demonstrated antihyperalgesic and anti-inflammatory activity due to the reduction in total leukocytes and TNF-α levels. However, CIT/β-CD has better pharmacological effects among the three samples evaluated. Therefore, CIT/β-CD has potential for the development of products to treat inflammatory and pain reactions.
