This study presents a review of the guides and tools found in the literature regarding the implementation of inclusive education to support schools in the development and improvement of their ...educational practices. A total of 22 guides were reviewed, with their corresponding analyses of: the purpose for which they were created, their inclusive perspective, their target social group, the stage at which they are most efficient, the action strategies they propose, the basic structure on which they are founded, the dimensions and indicators on which they stimulate reflection and the evaluation tools and instruments they propose. The conclusions highlight the need to use and show the content of this type of resources, generating spaces for reflection in school communities.
Many wildlife populations are declining at rates higher than can be explained by known threats to biodiversity. Recently, thiamine (vitamin B
) deficiency has emerged as a possible contributing ...cause. Here, thiamine status was systematically investigated in three animal classes: bivalves, ray-finned fishes, and birds. Thiamine diphosphate is required as a cofactor in at least five life-sustaining enzymes that are required for basic cellular metabolism. Analysis of different phosphorylated forms of thiamine, as well as of activities and amount of holoenzyme and apoenzyme forms of thiamine-dependent enzymes, revealed episodically occurring thiamine deficiency in all three animal classes. These biochemical effects were also linked to secondary effects on growth, condition, liver size, blood chemistry and composition, histopathology, swimming behaviour and endurance, parasite infestation, and reproduction. It is unlikely that the thiamine deficiency is caused by impaired phosphorylation within the cells. Rather, the results point towards insufficient amounts of thiamine in the food. By investigating a large geographic area, by extending the focus from lethal to sublethal thiamine deficiency, and by linking biochemical alterations to secondary effects, we demonstrate that the problem of thiamine deficiency is considerably more widespread and severe than previously reported.
Background Treatment strategies for papillary thyroid cancer remain controversial due to the lack of large, randomized controlled trials. The purpose of this study was to review the benefit of ...routine bilateral central lymph node dissection (CLND) by analyzing local recurrence and complication rates from a single institution over a 15-year period. Methods A retrospective, institutional review board–approved review of the Baylor Scott & White Tumor Registry was performed on all patients who underwent operation for papillary thyroid cancer between 2000 and 2015. Patients were evaluated by age, sex, tumor size, operation performed, pathologic findings, adjuvant therapy, and date of recurrence. Primary outcomes were cancer recurrence, recurrent laryngeal nerve injury, and hypoparathyroidism. Results Total thyroidectomy with CLND was performed in 266 patients. Metastases to level VI lymph nodes were present in 106/266 (39.8%) patients. Average follow-up after thyroidectomy was 46 months (range 1–125 months). Papillary thyroid cancer recurred in 4 patients after thyroidectomy with CLND for primary tumors with mean size of 1.6 cm (range 1.0–2.0 cm). Two patients with T4 tumors had local recurrence in the paratracheal soft tissues, and 2 patients presented with recurrence in the lateral neck. Temporary nerve injuries occurred in 9/266 (3.4%) and permanent nerve injuries in 1/266 (0.4%) of CLND. Permanent hypoparathyroidism occurred in 4/266 (1.5%) patients. Conclusion Total thyroidectomy with CLND can safely be performed routinely for treatment of papillary thyroid cancer in the hands of experienced endocrine surgeons. Dissection of level VI lymph nodes does not increase the risk of recurrent laryngeal nerve injury when performed routinely. Bilateral CLND with total thyroidectomy for papillary thyroid cancer potentially minimizes recurrence in the level VI compartment.
The Baltic Sea population of the common eider (Somateria mollissima) has declined dramatically during the last two decades. Recently, widespread episodic thiamine (vitamin B
) deficiency has been ...demonstrated in feral birds and suggested to contribute significantly to declining populations. Here we show that the decline of the common eider population in the Baltic Sea is paralleled by high mortality of the pulli a few days after hatch, owing to thiamine deficiency and probably also thereby associated abnormal behaviour resulting in high gull predation. An experiment with artificially incubated common eider eggs collected in the field revealed that thiamine treatment of pulli had a therapeutic effect on the thiamine status of the brain and prevented death. The mortality was 53% in untreated specimens, whereas it was only 7% in thiamine treated specimens. Inability to dive was also linked to brain damage typical for thiamine deficiency. Our results demonstrate how thiamine deficiency causes a range of symptoms in the common eider pulli, as well as massive die-offs a few days after hatch, which probably are the major explanation of the recent dramatic population declines.
Combination therapies delivered remotely via the internet or mobile devices are increasingly being used to improve and promote the self-management of chronic conditions. However, little is known ...regarding the long-term effects of these interventions.
The aim of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of a multimodal intervention program that measures associated variables such as catastrophizing, pain acceptance, and quality of life using a mobile device in people with chronic pain in an outpatient setting.
A randomized controlled clinical trial was performed using parallel treatment groups. A total of 209 patients with chronic musculoskeletal pain were randomly assigned to one of the two study arms. The intervention group received a standard web-based psychosocial therapy-type program of activities through a smartphone for 6 weeks. The control group only had access to the Find out more section of the app, which contained audiovisual material for pain management based on a self-help approach. The primary outcome was catastrophizing measured using the Pain Catastrophizing Scale (PCS). Secondary outcomes were pain acceptance measured using the Chronic Pain Acceptance Questionnaire and health-related quality of life measured using the EuroQol Visual Analogue Scale. Assessments were conducted at baseline (T1), after treatment (T2), and at the 3-month follow-up (T3). The variations between the different phases were assessed using the percentage change rescaled with log base 2. The Cohen d was calculated based on the results of the linear mixed model. The investigators of the study who evaluated the results were not involved in patient recruitment and were blinded to the group assignment.
Positive effects were found in the intervention group (T2-T1) in catastrophizing between the baseline and posttreatment phases (P<.001) and in helplessness (-0.72 vs 0.1; P=.002), rumination (-1.59 vs -0.53; P<.001), acceptance (0.38 vs 0.05; P=.001), and quality of life (0.43 vs -0.01; P=.002), although no significant changes were found for magnification (0.2 vs 0.77; P=.14) and satisfaction with health (0.25 vs -0.27; P=.13). Three months after treatment, significant differences were observed in the intervention group for the outcome variable of catastrophizing (PCS; -0.59 vs 0.2; P=.006) and the PCS subscales of helplessness (-0.65 vs 0.01; P=.07), rumination (1.23 vs -0.59; P=.04), and magnification (0.1 vs 0.86; P=.02).
The results of our study suggest that app-based mobile multidimensional treatments for adults with chronic pain improve catastrophizing, quality of life, and psychological flexibility immediately after treatment and that the effects are maintained for the primary outcome of catastrophizing for at least 3 months following treatment. Moreover, they promote self-management and can be used to complement face-to-face pain treatments.

The goal of this study is analyze the influence of perceived supervisor support (PSS) by employees at a micro level and the role of the cultural values of "power distance" and "masculinity" at a ...macro level on direct employee participation in decision-making (PDM). Furthermore, the influence of the gender of managers and employees is taken into account. The analysis is based upon the Sixth European Working Conditions Survey carried out by Eurofound in 2016. The results of a Hierarchical linear model indicate that all predictors significantly influenced PDM; PSS positively and cultural values negatively. When the gender of managers and employees is considered, the findings suggest that PSS has a larger impact on PDM when male managers address female employees. Regarding the moderating effect of PSS on cultural values, it is shown that masculinity and power distance lose importance when employees have the support of their supervisors.

Data analysis on non-Euclidean spaces, such as tree spaces, can be challenging. The main contribution of this article is establishment of a connection between tree-data spaces and the well-developed ...area of functional data analysis (FDA), where the data objects are curves. This connection comes through two tree representation approaches, the Dyck path representation and the branch length representation. These representations of trees in the Euclidean spaces enable us to exploit the power of FDA to explore statistical properties of tree data objects. A major challenge in the analysis is the sparsity of tree branches in a sample of trees. We overcome this issue by using a tree-pruning technique that focuses the analysis on important underlying population structures. This method parallels scale-space analysis in the sense that it reveals statistical properties of tree-structured data over a range of scales. The effectiveness of these new approaches is demonstrated by some novel results obtained in the analysis of brain-artery trees. The scale-space analysis reveals a deeper relationship between structure and age. These methods are the first to find a statistically significant gender difference. Skin biopsies were obtained from two male patients with X-linked Alport syndrome (XLAS) with hemizygous COL4A5 mutations in exon 41 or exon 46. Dermal fibroblasts were extracted and reprogrammed by ...nucleofection with episomal plasmids carrying OCT3/4, SOX2, KLF4 LIN28, L-MYC and p53 shRNA. The generated induced Pluripotent Stem Cell (iPSC) lines AS-FiPS2-Ep6F-28 and AS-FiPS3-Ep6F-9 were free of genomically integrated reprogramming genes, had the specific mutations, a stable karyotype, expressed pluripotency markers and generated embryoid bodies which were differentiated towards the three germ layers in vitro. These iPSC lines offer a useful resource to study Alport syndrome pathomechanisms and drug testing.
