The origin of the inner Galactic emission, measured by COMPTEL with a flux of ∼10

MeV cm
−2
s
−1
sr
−1
in the 1–30 MeV energy range from the inner Galactic region, has remained unsettled ...since its discovery. In this paper, we elaborate on a model of individual MeV gamma-ray sources unresolved by COMPTEL. This is conducted for sources crossmatched between the Swift-BAT and Fermi-LAT catalogs by interpolating the energy spectra in the hard X-ray and GeV gamma-ray ranges, as well as unmatched sources between the two catalogs. We find that the source contribution to the COMPTEL emission would be at least ∼20%. Combined with the Galactic diffuse emission, which is not well constrained, the COMPTEL emission can be roughly reproduced in some cases.

In conclusion, the article states that even if Tagore considered “the women's question” in a pragmatic manner, he saw it more as a social, rather than as a political, problem. Therefore, he could not liberate the female protagonists completely. Instead, he reconstitutes the home as a “locus of the unconquered and uncompromised space under the tutelage of the reformed bhadralok and reaffirming women's subordinate position” (Mitra 247).

Abstract
We report the results of a cross-match study between the hard X-ray and GeV gamma-ray catalogs, by making use of the latest 105 month Swift-Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) and 10 yr Fermi-Large ...Area Telescope (LAT) catalogs, respectively. The spatial cross-matching between the two catalogs results in the matching of 132 point-like sources, including ∼5% of false-match sources. Additionally, 24 sources that have been identified as the same identifications are matched. Among the 75 extended sources in the Fermi-LAT catalog, 31 sources have spatial coincidences with at least one Swift-BAT source inside their extent. All the matched sources consist of blazars (>60%), pulsars and pulsar wind nebulae (∼13%), radio galaxies (∼7%), binaries (∼5%), and others. Compared to the original catalogs, the matched sources are characterized by a double-peaked photon index distribution, higher flux, and larger gamma-ray variability index. This difference arises from the different populations of sources, particularly the large proportion of blazars (i.e., flat-spectrum radio quasar and BL Lac). We also report 13 cross-matched and unidentified sources. The matched sources in this study would be promising in the intermediate energy band between the hard X-ray and GeV gamma-ray observations, that is the unexplored MeV gamma-ray domain.

We studied the PeVatron nature of the pulsar wind nebula (PWN) G75.2+0.1 (“Dragonfly”) as part of our NuSTAR observational campaign of energetic PWNe. The Dragonfly is spatially coincident ...with LHAASO J2018+3651, whose maximum photon energy is 0.27 PeV. We detected a compact (radius
1
′
) inner nebula of the Dragonfly without a spectral break in 3–20 keV using NuSTAR. A joint analysis of the inner nebula with archival Chandra and XMM-Newton (XMM) observations yields a power-law spectrum with Γ = 1.49 ± 0.03. Synchrotron burnoff is observed from the shrinkage of the NuSTAR nebula at higher energies, from which we infer the magnetic field in the inner nebula of 24
μ
G at 3.5 kpc. Our analysis of archival XMM data and 13 yr of Fermi-LAT data confirms the detection of an extended (
∼
10
′
) outer nebula in 2–6 keV (Γ = 1.82 ± 0.03) and the nondetection of a GeV nebula, respectively. Using the VLA, XMM, and HAWC data, we modeled a multiwavelength spectral energy distribution of the Dragonfly as a leptonic PeVatron. The maximum injected particle energy of 1.4 PeV from our model suggests that the Dragonfly is likely a PeVatron. Our model prediction of the low magnetic field (2.7
μ
G) in the outer nebula and recent interaction with the host supernova remnant’s reverse shock (4 kyr ago) align with common features of PeVatron PWNe. The origin of its highly asymmetric morphology, pulsar proper motion, PWN–supernova remnant (SNR) interaction, and source distance will require further investigations in the future, including a multiwavelength study using radio, X-ray, and gamma-ray observations.
Despite known health disparities in cognitive aging, a comprehensive rationale for the increased burden in older minoritized populations including non-Latino Black and Latino adults has yet to be ...elucidated. While most work has focused on person-specific risk, studies are increasingly assessing neighborhood-level risk. We evaluated multiple aspects of the environmental milieu that may be critical when considering vulnerability to adverse health outcomes.
We investigated associations between a Census-tract derived Social Vulnerability Index (SVI) and level of and change in cognitive and motor functioning in 780 older adults (590 non-Latino Black adults, ∼73 years old at baseline; 190 Latinos, ∼70 years old baseline). Total SVI scores (higher = greater neighborhood-level vulnerability) were combined with annual evaluations of cognitive and motor functioning (follow-up ranged from 2 to 18 years). Demographically-adjusted mixed linear regression models tested for associations between SVI and cognitive and motor outcomes in analyses stratified by ethno-racial group.
For non-Latino Black participants, higher SVI scores were associated with lower levels of global cognitive and motor functioning-specifically, episodic memory, motor dexterity and gait-as well as longitudinal change in visuospatial abilities and hand strength. For Latinos, higher SVI scores were associated with lower levels of global motor functioning only-specifically, motor dexterity; there were no significant associations between SVI and change in motor functioning.
Neighborhood-level social vulnerability is associated with cognitive and motor functioning in non-Latino Black and Latino older adults, although associations appear to contribute to level more so than longitudinal change.
Human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs) and their most abundant component, 2'-Fucosyllactose (2'-FL), are known to be immunomodulatory. Previously, it was shown that HMOs and 2'-FL bind to the C-type ...lectin receptor DC-SIGN. Here we show, using a ligand-receptor competition assay, that a whole mixture of HMOs from pooled human milk (HMOS) and 2'-FL inhibit the binding of the carbohydrate-binding receptor DC-SIGN to its prototypical ligands, fucose and the oligosaccharide Lewis-B, (Le
) in a dose-dependent way. Interestingly, such inhibition by HMOS and 2'-FL was not detected for another C-type lectin, langerin, which is evolutionarily similar to DC-SIGN. The cell-ligand competition assay using DC-SIGN expressing cells confirmed that 2'-FL inhibits the binding of DC-SIGN to Le
. Molecular dynamic (MD) simulations show that 2'-FL exists in a preorganized bioactive conformation before binding to DC-SIGN and this conformation is retained after binding to DC-SIGN. Le
has more flexible conformations and utilizes two binding modes, which operate one at a time via its two fucoses to bind to DC-SIGN. Our hypothesis is that 2'-FL may have a reduced entropic penalty due to its preorganized state, compared to Le
, and it has a lower binding enthalpy, suggesting a better binding to DC-SIGN. Thus, due to the better binding to DC-SIGN, 2'-FL may replace Le
from its binding pocket in DC-SIGN. The MD simulations also showed that 2'-FL does not bind to langerin. Our studies confirm 2'-FL as a specific ligand for DC-SIGN and suggest that 2'-FL can replace other DC-SIGN ligands from its binding pocket during the ligand-receptor interactions in possible immunomodulatory processes.
Aimed at progress in mega-electron volt (MeV) gamma-ray astronomy, which has not yet been well-explored, Compton telescope missions with a variety of detector concepts have been proposed so far. One ...of the key techniques for these future missions is an event reconstruction algorithm that is able to determine the scattering orders of multiple Compton scattering events and to identify events in which gamma rays escape from the detectors before they deposit all of their energies. We revisit previous event reconstruction methods and propose a modified algorithm based on a probabilistic method. First, we present a general formalism of the probabilistic model of Compton scattering describing physical interactions inside the detector and measurement processes. Then, we also introduce several approximations in the calculation of the probability functions for efficient computation. For validation, the developed algorithm has been applied to simulation data of a Compton telescope using a liquid argon time projection chamber, which is a new type of Compton telescope proposed for the GRAMS project. We have confirmed that it works successfully for up to 8-hit events, including correction of incoming gamma-ray energies for escape events. The proposed algorithm can be used for next-generation MeV gamma-ray missions featured by large-volume detectors, e.g., GRAMS.
Hepatic iron is known to regulate insulin signaling pathways and to influence insulin sensitivity in insulin resistance (IR) patients. However, the role of insulin on hepatic iron homeostasis remains ...unexplored. Here, we report that insulin promotes transferrin-bound iron uptake but shows no influence on non transferrin-bound iron uptake in human hepatic HepG2 cells. As a mechanism we detected increased transferrin receptor-1 (TfR1) expression both at protein and mRNA levels. Unaltered stability of protein and transcript of TfR1 suggested the regulation at transcriptional level that was confirmed by promoter activity. Involvement of transcription factor hypoxia inducible factor-1 (HIF-1) was shown by mutational analyses of the TfR1 promoter region and by electrophoretic mobility shift assay. When HepG2 cells were transfected with specific siRNA targeted to 3'UTR of HIF-1α, the regulatory subunit of HIF-1; insulin-induced TfR1 expression and iron uptake were inhibited. Transfection of cDNA expressing stable form of HIF-1α reversed the increased TfR1 expression and iron uptake. These results suggest a novel role of insulin in hepatic iron uptake by a HIF-1 dependent transcriptional regulation of TfR1.
Oxygen sensing transcription factor HIF-1 is activated due to accumulation of regulatory subunit HIF-1α by posttranslational stability mechanism during hypoxia or by several other stimuli even in ...normoxia. HIF-1α is also regulated by NF-kB mediated transcription mechanism. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) act as an important regulator of HIF-1 either by affecting prolyl hydroxylase activity, the critical determinant of HIF-1α stabilization or by activating NF-kB to promote HIF-1α transcription. Insulin is known to activate HIF-1 by a ROS dependent mechanism but the molecular mechanism of HIF-1α regulation is not known so far. Here we show that insulin regulates HIF-1α by a novel transcriptional mechanism by a ROS-sensitive activation of Sp1 in 3T3-L1 preadipocyte. Insulin shows little effect on HIF-1α protein stability, but increases HIF-1α promoter activity. Mutation analyses, electrophoretic mobility shift assay and chromatin immunoprecipitation assay confirm the role of Sp1 in HIF-1α transcription. We further demonstrate that insulin-induced ROS generation initiates signaling pathway involving phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase and protein kinase C for Sp1 mediated HIF-1α transcription. In summary, we reveal that insulin regulates HIF-1α by a novel transcriptional mechanism involving Sp1.

Prebiotic galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS) were shown to support mucosal immune development by enhancing regulatory-type Th1 immune polarization induced by synthetic CpG oligodeoxynucleotides (TLR9 ...agonist mimicking a bacterial DNA trigger). Epithelial-derived galectin-9 was associated with these immunomodulatory effects. We aimed to identify the most active fractions within GOS based on the degree of polymerization (DP), and to study the immunomodulatory capacities of DP3-sized β-3'galactosyllactose (β-3'GL) using a transwell co-culture model of human intestinal epithelial cells (IEC) and activated peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC). IEC were apically exposed to different DP fractions of GOS or β-3'GL in the presence of CpG, and basolaterally co-cultured with αCD3/CD28-activated PBMC, washed, and incubated in fresh medium for IEC-derived galectin analysis. Only DP3-5 in the presence of CpG enhanced galectin-9 secretion. DP3-sized β-3'GL promoted a regulatory-type Th1 response by increasing IFNγ and IL-10 or galectin-9 concentrations as compared to CpG alone. In addition, IEC-derived galectin-3, -4, and -9 secretion was increased by β-3'GL when combined with CpG. Therefore, the GOS DP3-5 and most effectively DP3-sized β-3'GL supported the immunomodulatory properties induced by CpG by enhancing epithelial-derived galectin secretion, which, in turn, could support mucosal immunity.
