Evaluate patellofemoral cartilage health, as assessed by quantitative magnetic resonance imaging (qMRI) T2 relaxation times, 24-months after ACL reconstruction (ACLR) and determine if they were ...associated with patellofemoral contact forces and knee mechanics during gait 3 months after surgery.
Thirty individuals completed motion analysis during overground walking at a self-selected speed 3 months after ACLR. An EMG-driven neuromusculoskeletal model was used to determine muscle forces, which were then used in a previously described model to estimate patellofemoral contact forces. Biomechanical variables of interest included peak patellofemoral contact force, peak knee flexion angle and moment, and walking speed. These same participants underwent a sagittal bilateral T2 mapping qMRI scan 24-months after surgery. T2 relaxation times were estimated for both patellar and trochlear cartilage. Paired t-tests were used to compare T2 relaxation times between limbs while Pearson correlations and linear regressions were utilized to assess the association between the biomechanical variables of interest and T2 relaxation times.
Prolonged involved limb trochlear T2 relaxation times (vs uninvolved) were present 24-months after surgery, indicating worse cartilage health. No differences were detected in patellar cartilage. Significant negative associations were present within the involved limb for all the biomechanical variables of interest 3 months after ACLR and trochlear T2 relaxation times at 24-months. No associations were found in patellar cartilage or within the uninvolved limb.
Altered involved limb trochlear cartilage health is present 24-months after ACLR and may be related to patellofemoral loading and other walking gait mechanics 3 months after surgery.
Flood event set generation, as employed in catastrophe risk models, relies on gauge information that is not available in data‐scarce regions. To overcome this limitation, we develop a stochastic ...fluvial and pluvial flood model of Southeast Asia, using freely and globally available discharge data from the global hydrological model GloFAS and rainfall from the ERA5 reanalysis. We use a conditional multivariate statistical model to produce a synthetic catalog of 10,000 years of flood events. We calculate the flood population exposure associated with each flood event using freely available population data from WorldPop and generate exposure probability exceedance curves. We validate the population exposure curves against observed flood disaster data from EM‐DAT, showing that our methodology provides exposure estimates that are in line with historical observations. We find that there is a 1% probability that more than 30 million people will be exposed to flooding in a given year according to our event set. This number is roughly half the population living in the 100‐year return period flood zone of Fathom's hazard maps, suggesting most studies based on static flood maps overestimate exposure. This analysis provides significant progress over previous non‐stochastic studies which are only able to compute total or average exposure within a given floodplain area and demonstrates that a reanalysis‐based stochastic flood model can be designed to generate reliable estimates of population exposure probability exceedance. This study is a step toward a fully global catastrophe model for floods capable of providing exposure and loss estimates worldwide.

Objective
Older people with multiple sclerosis (MS) have a less active radiological and clinical presentation, but many still attain significant levels of disability; but what drives worsening ...disability in this group?
Methods
We used data from the UK MS Register to characterize demographics and clinical features of late‐onset multiple sclerosis (LOMS; symptom onset at ≥50 years), compared with adult‐onset MS (AOMS; onset 18–49 years). We performed a pathology study of a separate MS cohort with a later onset (n = 18, mean age of onset 54 years) versus AOMS (n = 23, mean age of onset 29 years).
Results
In the Register cohort, there were 1,608 (9.4%) with LOMS. When compared with AOMS, there was a lower proportion of women, a higher proportion of primary progressive MS, a higher level of disability at diagnosis (median MS impact scale 36.7 vs. 28.3, p < 0.001), and a higher proportion of gait‐related initial symptoms. People with LOMS were less likely to receive a high efficacy disease‐modifying treatment and attained substantial disability sooner. Controlling for age of death and sex, neuron density in the thalamus and pons decreased with onset‐age, whereas actively demyelinating lesions and compartmentalized inflammation was greatest in AOMS. Only neuron density, and not demyelination or the extent of compartmentalized inflammation, correlated with disability outcomes in older‐onset MS patients.
Interpretation
The more progressive nature of older‐onset MS is associated with significant neurodegeneration, but infrequent inflammatory demyelination. These findings have implications for the assessment and treatment of MS in older people. ANN NEUROL 2024;95:471–486
We search for energetic electron recoil signals induced by boosted dark matter (BDM) from the galactic center using the COSINE-100 array of NaI(Tl) crystal detectors at the Yangyang Underground ...Laboratory. The signal would be an excess of events with energies above 4 MeV over the well-understood background. Because no excess of events are observed in a 97.7 kg·yr exposure, we set limits on BDM interactions under a variety of hypotheses. Notably, we explored the dark photon parameter space, leading to competitive limits compared to direct dark photon search experiments, particularly for dark photon masses below 4 MeV and considering the invisible decay mode. Furthermore, by comparing our results with a previous BDM search conducted by the Super-Kamionkande experiment, we found that the COSINE-100 detector has advantages in searching for low-mass dark matter. This analysis demonstrates the potential of the COSINE-100 detector to search for MeV electron recoil signals produced by the dark sector particle interactions.
There is a long standing debate about whether or not the annual modulation signal reported by the DAMA/LIBRA collaboration is induced by Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMP) in the galaxy's ...dark matter halo scattering from nuclides in their NaI(Tl) crystal target/detector. This is because regions of WIMP-mass vs. WIMP-nucleon cross-section parameter space that can accommodate the DAMA/LIBRA-phase1 modulation signal in the context of the standard WIMP dark matter galactic halo and isospin-conserving (canonical), spin-independent (SI) WIMP-nucleon interactions have been excluded by many of other dark matter search experiments including COSINE-100, which uses the same NaI(Tl) target/detector material. Moreover, the recently released DAMA/LIBRA-phase2 results are inconsistent with an interpretation as WIMP-nuclide scattering via the canonical SI interaction and prefer, instead, isospin-violating or spin-dependent interactions. Dark matter interpretations of the DAMA/LIBRA signal are sensitive to the NaI(Tl) scintillation efficiency for nuclear recoils, which is characterized by so-called quenching factors (QF), and the QF values used in previous studies differ significantly from recently reported measurements, which may have led to incorrect interpretations of the DAMA/LIBRA signal. In this article, the compatibility of the DAMA/LIBRA and COSINE-100 results, in light of the new QF measurements is examined for different possible types of WIMP-nucleon interactions. The resulting allowed parameter space regions associated with the DAMA/LIBRA signal are explicitly compared with 90% confidence level upper limits from the initial 59.5 day COSINE-100 exposure. With the newly measured QF values, the allowed 3σ regions from the DAMA/LIBRA data are still generally excluded by the COSINE-100 data.
We report measurements of annual and diurnal modulations of the cosmic-ray muon rate in the Yangyang underground laboratory (Y2L) using 952 days of COSINE-100 data acquired between September 2016 and ...July 2019. A correlation of the muon rate with the atmospheric temperature is observed and its amplitude on the muon rate is determined. The effective atmospheric temperature and muon rate variations are positively correlated with a measured effective temperature coefficient of αT = 0.82 ± 0.10. This result is consistent with a model of meson production in the atmosphere. We also searched for a diurnal modulation in the underground muon rate by comparing one-hour intervals. No significant diurnal modulation of the muon rate was observed.
