Aims. Most hot Jupiters are expected to spiral in toward their host stars because the angular momentum of the orbital motion is transferred to the stellar spin. Their orbits can also precess as a ...result of planet-star interactions. Calculations show that both effects might be detected for the very-hot exoplanet WASP-12 b using the method of precise transit-timing over a time span of about 10 yr. Methods. We acquired new precise light curves for 29 transits of WASP-12 b, spannning four observing seasons from November 2012 to February 2016. New mid-transit times, together with those from the literature, were used to refine the transit ephemeris and analyze the timing residuals. Results. We find that the transit times of WASP-12 b do not follow a linear ephemeris with a 5σ confidence level. They may be approximated with a quadratic ephemeris that gives a change rate in the orbital period of (−2.56 ± 0.40) × 10-2 s yr-1. The tidal quality parameter of the host star was found to be equal to 2.5 × 105, which is similar to theoretical predictions for Sun-like stars. We also considered a model in which the observed timing residuals are interpreted as a result of the apsidal precession. We find, however, that this model is statistically less probable than the orbital decay.
Laser forming is a highly flexible and iterative contactless thermomechanical forming process that utilises a defocused laser beam to induce material shortening and bending. There is a high potential ...for the use of laser forming in rapid prototyping, small and unique batch production; however, to achieve that potential a certain level of automation is required. The presented work seeks to address this need of automation by proposing an end-to-end sheet-metal manufacturing system utilising laser forming and cutting, where the input for the system is a 3D CAD model and the output is a manufactured product. The contribution of the presented work is interconnected laser forming and cutting framework. The presented framework consists of subsystems for automatic extraction of geometrical information from a CAD model, process planning and generation of manufacturing information, scheduling of tasks and a feedback control loop for laser forming. The framework is experimentally validated and has shown consistent forming and cutting behaviour on two types of parts with variation in cutting features, bend angle and lengths of the bend's free edge.
The Aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) plays important roles in many normal and pathological physiological processes, including endocrine homeostasis, foetal development, cell cycle regulation, cellular ...oxidation/antioxidation, immune regulation, metabolism of endogenous and exogenous substances, and carcinogenesis. An experimental data set for human in vitro AhR activation comprising 324,858 substances, of which 1,982 were confirmed actives, was used to test an in-house-developed approach to rationally select Quantitative Structure-Activity Relationship (QSAR) training set substances from an unbalanced data set. In the first iteration, active and inactive substances were selected by random to make QSAR models. Then, more inactive substances were added to the training set in two further iterations based on incorrect or out-of-domain predictions to produce larger models. The resulting 'rational' model, comprising 832 actives and four times as many inactives, i.e. 3,328, was compared to a model with a training set of same size and proportion of inactives chosen entirely by random. Both models underwent robust cross-validation and external validation showing good statistical performance, with the rational model having external validation sensitivity of 85.1% and specificity of 97.1%, compared to the random model with sensitivity 89.1% and specificity 91.3%. Furthermore, we integrated the training sets for both models with the 93 external validation test set actives and 372 randomly selected inactives to make two final models. They also underwent external validations for specificity and cross-validations, which confirmed that good predictivity was maintained. All developed models were applied to predict 80,086 EU REACH substances. The rational and random final models had 63.1% and 56.9% coverage of the REACH set, respectively, and predicted 1,256 and 3,214 substances as actives. The final models as well as predictions for AhR activation for 650,000 substances will be published in the Danish (Q)SAR Database and can, for example, be used for priority setting, in read-across predictions and in weight-of-evidence assessments of chemicals.

The question of whether it is possible to set relevant, robust and reliable benchmarks for viscous free-surface flows with complex free-surface dynamics is investigated in this work. The proposed method for finding an answer to this question consists of selecting three conditions leading to increasing flow complexity and to simulate them using three well established solvers based on diverse numerical techniques. In the three conditions, a submerged horizontal cylinder in an uniform current perpendicular to its axis is considered, the Reynolds number is fixed to 180, and the analysis is limited to a 2D framework. While the unbounded solution for such flow is well established, adding a free surface and setting the submergence ratio and the Froude number in certain ranges, challenging free-surface dynamics takes place. In the specific conditions selected, phenomena of increasing complexity are identified and studied with: (i) δ+-SPH, an enhanced version of the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics method, (ii) a single-phase Finite Volume scheme with a Level Set function for tracking the free-surface (LS-FVM), and (iii) a two-phase Finite Volume with a Volume-of-Fluid algorithm to treat the gas/liquid interface (VOF-FVM). It is shown that the test-cases, even being geometrically simple, present intricate complexities, such as alternate metastable states in the wake, linked to the strong non-linearities induced by the interactions between the wake’s vorticity and the free surface. It is also shown that the solvers considered are able to depict a consistent representation of these complex flows, useful as benchmarks for other solvers and methods. An additional research question, investigating whether the improvements of the δ+ variant of the SPH method are necessary for simulating specific aspects of the flows treated in the paper, is also posed and discussed.
We report observations of the flickering variability of the symbiotic recurrent nova RS Oph at quiescence in five bands (UBVRI). We find evidence of a correlation between the peak-to-peak flickering ...amplitude (ΔF) and the average flux of the hot component (F
av). The correlation is highly significant, with a correlation coefficient of 0.85 and a p-value of ∼10−20. Combining the data from all wavebands, we find a dependence of the type
$\Delta F \propto F_{{\rm av}}^k$
, with power-law index k = 1.02 ± 0.04 for the UBVRI flickering of RS Oph. Thus, the relationship between the amplitude of variability and the average flux of the hot component is consistent with linearity. The rms amplitude of flickering is on average 8 per cent (±2 per cent) of F
av. The detected correlation is similar to that found in accreting black holes/neutron stars and cataclysmic variables. The possible reasons are briefly discussed. The data are available upon request from the authors.
This paper discusses the analysis and computations of chaos–hyperchaos (or vice versa) transition in Rössler–Nikolov–Clodong O (RNC-O) hyperchaotic system. Our work is motivated by our previous ...analysis of hyperchaotic transitional regimes of RNC-O system and the results recently obtained from another researchers. The analysis and numerical simulations show that chaos–hyperchaos transition in RNC-O system is coupled to change in the equilibria type as one large hyperchaotic attractor occurs. Moreover, we show that for this system, a zero-Hopf bifurcation is not possible. We also consider the cases when the divergence of the system is a constant and detected two families of exact solutions.

Introduction
: Podocalyxin (PCX) is an indicator of glomerular injury. Aside from the kidney, it is expressed in the endothelial cells of various organs. Echographic examinations are useful in ...assessing the alterations in cardiovascular structure and function during pregnancy.
Aim
: The aim of the present study was to evaluate PCX concentrations in preeclampsia (PE) and to investigate the existence of association between PCX levels and maternal echocardiographic and Doppler ultrasound parameters.
Materials and methods
: Fifty-five women with PE were examined. The mean age of patients was 24.9±6 years; and the mean age of the control group of 35 women with normal pregnancies was 24.7±5.4 years. ELISA was used to determine concentrations of PCX. Echocardiographic assessment of all subjects was performed. In addition, umbilical (UmA) and uterine (UtA) artery pulsatility indices (PI) were evaluated.
Results
: The levels of serum PCX in PE women were statistically significantly higher than those in women with normal pregnancy: 2.66±0.67 vs. 2.40±0.33 ng/ml (

=0.03). Cut-off value at 3 ng/ml was obtained for podocalyxin in order to discriminate between PE and healthy pregnancy. Logistic regression model was statistically significant: OR=3.226, (95% CI 1.084–9.599); (

Conclusions
: Healthy pregnant women with PCX levels above the cut-off value of 3 ng/ml are at a higher risk for developing preeclampsia. Elevated PCX levels indicate three times higher probability for PE development than women with values below the cut-off value. PCX might be a promising marker for diagnosis and prognosis of PE.
In this paper, the non-linear dynamical behavior of a 3D autonomous dissipative system of Hopf–Langford type is investigated. Through the help of a mode transformation (as the system’s energy is ...included) it is shown that the 3D nonlinear system can be separated of two coupled subsystems in the master (drive)-slave (response) synchronization type. After that, based on the computing first and second Lyapunov values for master system, we have attempted to give a general framework (from bifurcation theory point of view) for understanding the structural stability and bifurcation behavior of original system. Moreover, a family of exact solutions of the master system is obtained and discussed. The effect of synchronization on the dynamic behavior of original system is also studied by numerical simulations.
In this paper, we derive a four-dimensional ordinary differential equation (ODE) model representing the main interactions between Sox9, Sox10, Olig2 and several miRNAs, which drive the process of ...(olygodendrocyte) differentiation. We utilize the Lyapunov–Andronov theory to analyze its dynamical properties. Our results indicated that the strength of external signaling (morphogenic gradients shh and bmp), and the transcription rate of mOlig2 explain the existence of stable and unstable (sustained oscillations) behavior in the system. Possible biological implications are discussed.
Atherosclerosis and vascular calcification (VC) progression in chronic kidney disease is favored by disturbances of mineral metabolism. We compared the effect of phosphate binder lanthanum (La) ...carbonate with sevelamer-HCl on atherosclerosis, VC and bone structure and function in mice with chronic renal failure (CRF).
Apolipoprotein E-deficient (apoE(-/-)) mice were randomized to one non-CRF and three CRF groups, fed with standard diet (one non-CRF and one CRF) or diet supplemented with either 3% lanthanum carbonate (La3%) or 3% sevelamer-HCl (Sev3%).
Both La3% and Sev3% supplemented CRF mice displayed a decrease of serum phosphorus, calcification at both intimal and medial aortic sites and atherosclerosis. This was associated with a reduction of plaque Type I collagen expression by both binders and of positive nitrotyrosine staining in response to sevelamer-HCl only. Increased mineral apposition and bone formation rates in unsupplemented CRF mice were reduced by Sev3% but not by La3%.
The beneficial effects of La carbonate and sevelamer-HCl on the progression of VC and atherosclerosis in CRF mice could be mainly due to a decrease in phosphate retention and likewise a reduction of arterial Type I collagen expression. The effect of La carbonate differed from that of sevelamer-HCl in that it did not appear to exert its vascular effects via changes in oxidative stress or bone remodeling in the present model.
