Mammary cancer is a disease that requires effective treatments. Conventional chemotherapy, while effective, often causes harmful side effects. In contrast, metronomic chemotherapy (mCHT), which ...involves the continuous administration of low doses of anticancer drugs, is presented as a less aggressive alternative. In this study, the genotoxic impact of treatment with Cyclophosphamide and Meloxicam under the mCHT approach was evaluated in ten canine (Canis lupus familiaris) patients with mammary carcinoma after undergoing mastectomy. The patients underwent monthly evaluations, including chest X–rays, blood tests, and the alkaline comet assay to measure genotoxic effects of the antineoplastic drugs. These results were compared with those of a group that received conventional chemotherapy. The results revealed that patients treated with mCHT experienced significantly lower levels of DNA damage compared to those who received conventional chemotherapy. Furthermore, DNA damage decreased over time during mCHT, suggesting that dogs may have developed tolerance to the treatment. Blood parameters remained stable in the mCHT–treated group, and X–rays showed no signs of recurrence or metastasis. All dogs survived during the one–year follow–up without mammary cancer recurrence. It is concluded that mCHT with Cyclophosphamide appears to be a less aggressive therapeutic option with a more favorable genotoxic profile in the treatment of mammary cancer in dogs.
The plecos (Loricariidae) fish represent a great model for cytogenetic investigations due to their variety of karyotypes, including diploid and polyploid genomes, and different types of sex ...chromosomes. In this study we investigate Transancistrus santarosensis a rare loricariid endemic to Ecuador, integrating cytogenetic methods with specimens’ molecular identification by mtDNA, to describe the the species karyotype. We aim to verify whether sex chromosomes are cytologically identifiable and if they are associated with the accumulation of repetitive sequences present in other species of the family. The analysis of the karyotype (2n = 54 chromosomes) excludes recent centric fusion and pericentromeric inversion and suggests the presence of a ZZ/ZW sex chromosome system at an early stage of differentiation: the W chromosome is degenerated but is not characterized by the presence of differential sex-specific repetitive DNAs. Data indicate that although T. santarosensis has retained the ancestral diploid number of Loricariidae, it accumulated heterochromatin and shows non-syntenic ribosomal genes localization, chromosomal traits considered apomorphic in the family.
Se presenta el estudio de un perro con sintomatología de Parvovirosis que resultó positivo a los test de inmunocromatografìa para Parvovirus y Ehrlichia canis el cual fue confirmado, a nivel ...molecular, como positivo para E. canis y E. ewingii. Además del interés que representa este caso desde el punto de vista clínico, la detección mediante PCR de E. ewingii sugiere la presencia de este patógeno fuera de su rango de distribución geográfica natural (México, Guatemala, Guyana, Guayana Francesa y Estados Unidos) y destaca la necesidad de realizar estudios moleculares en garrapatas locales a fin de verificar si éste es un caso aislado en Ecuador o si, por el contrario, existe colonización de E. ewingii en vectores locales.

El objetivo de la investigación fue evaluar las propiedades químicas y biológicas de extractos acuosos e hidroalcohólicos del pseudotallo de Musa x paradisiaca L. La materia prima vegetal fue ...caracterizada mediante análisis físico-químicos. El estudio químico cualitativo de los extractos se realizó a través de un tamizaje fitoquímico, por cromatografía en capa delgada (CCD) y mediante cromatografía líquida de alta eficiencia acoplada a espectrometría de masas (CLAE/EM), sugiriendo la existencia de saponinas y compuestos fenólicos. Se cuantificaron las saponinas en los tres extractos, obteniéndose la mayor concentración en el acuoso e hidroalcohólico (1:1). En la cuantificación de compuestos fenólicos por el método de Folin-Ciocalteu, el extracto hidroalcohólico (1:1), presentó la mayor cantidad de tales metabolitos. La actividad expectorante del extracto hidroalcohólico (1:1), siguiendo el modelo de rojo fenol en secreciones de ratón, a la dosis ensayada (500 mg/kg de peso del animal) mostró un efecto mucolítico similar al control positivo (Bisolvon). El estudio del efecto del extracto en el gasterópodo Cerithidea valida no reveló efecto letal bajo las condiciones estudiadas. Se detectó la inmediata retracción del cuerpo del molusco dentro de la concha y la oclusión de la abertura con el opérculo, lo que provocó la inmovilidad de los moluscos, comportamiento atribuido a la probable acción irritante del extracto.

La Ehrlichiosis monocítica canina (EMC), una enfermedad emergente causada por Ehrlichia canis. Este patógeno se encuentra comúnmente en perros y otros canidos silvestres que actúan como reservorios ...naturales. La EMC es prevalente en regiones tropicales y subtropicales, por la presencia de la garrapata marrón del perro, Rhipicephalus sanguineus, que actúa como vector principal, siendo América Latina una región afectada. La enfermedad se manifiesta en tres etapas clínicas: aguda, subclínica y crónica, con síntomas como depresión, letargo, anorexia, hemorragias, y cambios en los parámetros hematológicos. El diagnóstico de E. canis puede ser a través de pruebas serológicas y moleculares, siendo la PCR dirigida al gen 16S rRNA considerada la técnica más fiable. El estudio se llevó a cabo en perros con sintomatología clínica en una clínica veterinaria en Ecuador. Se realizaron test de inmunocromatografia y reacción de cadena de polimerasa para identificar la presencia de E. canis. Se evidenció que las pruebas serológicas presentan una tasa de positividad superior, pero pueden generar falsos positivos debido al tiempo post infección. La PCR permite la detección temprana, incluso en fases subclínicas, ofreciendo la posibilidad de iniciar el tratamiento antes de la manifestación de síntomas. Se concluye destacando la importancia de realizar combinación de pruebas de laboratorio para un diagnóstico más fiable de la EMC en perros, identificando precozmente caninos como posibles fuentes de transmisión zoonótica de E. canis a los humanos.
The objective of the research was to evaluate the chemical and biological properties of aqueous and hydroalcoholic extracts of the pseudostem of Musa x paradisiaca L. The vegetable raw material was ...characterized by physic-chemical methods. The qualitative chemical study of the extracts was carried out through phytochemical screening, by thin layer chromatography (TLC) and by high performance liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (HPLC/MS), suggesting the presence of saponins, phenolic compounds and reducing sugars. The saponins were quantified in the three extracts, obtaining the highest concentration in the aqueous and hydroalcoholic (1:1). The quantification of phenolic compounds by the Folin-Ciocalteu method, perceiving that the hydroalcoholic extract (1:1) showed the highest amount of such metabolites. The expectorant activity of the hydroalcoholic extract (1:1), following the phenol red model in mouse secretions, at the dose tested (500 mg / kg of animal weight) showed a mucolytic effect similar to the positive control (Bisolvon). The study of the effect of the extract on the Cerithidea valida gastropod did not reveal a lethal effect under the conditions studied. The immediate retraction of the body of the mollusk inside the shell and the occlusion of the opening with the operculum was detected, which caused the immobility of the mollusks, a behavior attributed to the probable irritant action of the extract.
