Facilitated communication involves hand-over-hand or hand-on-forearm support of students as they communicate through pointing at pictures, letters or other objects. Over time, it is expected that the ...hand and arm support can be faded back. This observational study describes an effort to introduce facilitated communication to 22 students, ranging in age from 3 years 10 months to 21 years, in several US public schools. The students are all labeled autistic and do not speak or speak only with echolalic phrases. The findings include observations of the students communicating with facilitation, language samples, and conversations by the students. The students reveal unexpected literacy and numeracy skills. The appearance of these abilities raises a number of questions concerning prior assumptions about autism, communication, independence and interdependence, and the education of students with and without disabilities.

A questionnaire was distributed to 575 college library users to explore the extent of their use of federal, state, municipal, international, and foreign documents, as well as usage of various ...bibliographic tools to gain access to them. Responses demonstrated that bibliographic instruction in the classroom significantly affected access to documents and use of microform information. (four references) (DB)
Four hundred Staphylococcus aureus strains isolated from cows suffering from mastitis were tested for their biochemical characteristics with special reference to their ability to clear egg-yolk and ...produce typical colonies on Baird-Parker medium and to correlate and coagulase reaction with the ability to produce a thermostable nuclease and enterotoxin. Biotyping of strains showed that 93.5% were of biotype C and 6.5% were of biotype A. 10% of strains were non typable with either human or bovine phage sets; 13% were typable with human and bovine phages. Of 238 cultures tested 26 (10%) produced enterotoxin, 24 strains of biotype C produced enterotoxin, mostly type C and 2 biotype A strains produced enterotoxin, one produced C and the other A and D in combination. There was good correlation between coagulase and thermostable nuclease reaction. Cultures showing 2+ coagulase reaction or above also produced thermostable nuclease. Two strains giving 1+ and 2+ coagulase reactions, respectively, also produced enterotoxin C. On Baird-Parker medium the level of typical isolates ranged from 4% after 24 to 21% after 48h. The egg-yolk reaction was difficult to see in a further 43% of strains and 32% strains failed to show any clearing after 48h incubation. Some of the strains which failed to clear the egg yolk or did so only poorly were enterotoxigenic.
