Three years after Muhammad Ali lighted the torch to open the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, Billy Payne is learning to live, without the frenetic pace the Olympics brought to his life for more than a ...decade. The Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games, which collected and spent about $1.7 billion, was dissolved in early July "on time and on budget," according to Payne, who served as president. A U.S. House of Representatives committee is investigating possible corruption in the Atlanta Olympics bid and is reviewing documents related to the city's bid. After the Games, Payne served as vice chairman of NationsBank for more than a year. He decided to join Premier Technologies in mid1998 at the urging of his son Porter, 24, who was working for WebMD Inc. at the time.
