In experiments that measure the lifetime of trapped particles, in addition to loss mechanisms with exponential survival probability functions, particles can be lost by mechanisms with non-exponential ...survival probability functions. Failure to account for such loss mechanisms produces systematic measurement error and associated systematic uncertainties in these measurements. In this work, we develop a general competing risks survival analysis method to account for the joint effect of loss mechanisms with either exponential or non-exponential survival probability functions, and a method to quantify the size of systematic effects and associated uncertainties for lifetime estimates. As a case study, we apply our survival analysis formalism and method to the Ultra Cold Neutron lifetime experiment at NIST. In this experiment, neutrons can escape a magnetic trap before they decay due to a wall loss mechanism with an associated non-exponential survival probability function.
The Electron Ion Collider (EIC) is the next generation of precision QCD facility to be built at Brookhaven National Laboratory in conjunction with Thomas Jefferson National Laboratory. There are a ...significant number of software and computing challenges that need to be overcome at the EIC. During the EIC detector proposal development period, the ECCE consortium began identifying and addressing these challenges in the process of producing a complete detector proposal based upon detailed detector and physics simulations. In this document, the software and computing efforts to produce this proposal are discussed; furthermore, the computing and software model and resources required for the future of ECCE are described.
Vancouver has experienced an explosive HIV epidemic despite the presence of a needle exchange programme (NEP). We sought possible explanations for high-risk syringe sharing among Vancouver injection ...drug users over the period January 1999 to October 2000. Overall, 14% of participants reported high-risk sharing. Although acquiring needles exclusively from the NEP was independently associated with less sharing, we identified several risk factors for persistent sharing, including difficulty accessing sterile needles, bingeing, and frequent cocaine injection.
Interest in affective computing is burgeoning, in great part due to its role in emerging affective human-computer interfaces (HCI). To date, the majority of existing research on automated emotion ...analysis has relied on data collected in controlled environments. With the rise of HCI applications on mobile devices, however, so-called "in-the-wild" settings have posed a serious threat for emotion recognition systems, particularly those based on voice. In this case, environmental factors such as ambient noise and reverberation severely hamper system performance. In this paper, we quantify the detrimental effects that the environment has on emotion recognition and explore the benefits achievable with speech enhancement. Moreover, we propose a modulation spectral feature pooling scheme that is shown to outperform a state-of-the-art benchmark system for environment-robust prediction of spontaneous arousal and valence emotional primitives. Experiments on an environment-corrupted version of the RECOLA dataset of spontaneous interactions show the proposed feature pooling scheme, combined with speech enhancement, outperforming the benchmark across different noise-only, reverberation-only and noise-plus-reverberation conditions. Additional tests with the SEWA database show the benefits of the proposed method for in-the-wild applications.
The evaluation of the measurement of double-spin asymmetries for charge-separated pions and kaons produced in deep-inelastic scattering from the proton using the ECCE detector design concept is ...presented, for the combinations of lepton and hadron beam energies of 5 × 41 GeV2 and 18 × 275 GeV2. The study uses unpolarised simulated data that are processed through a full GEANT simulation of the detector. These data are then reweighted at the parton level with DSSV helicity distributions and DSS fragmentation functions, in order to generate the relevant asymmetries, and subsequently analysed. The performed analysis shows that the ECCE detector concept provides the resolution and acceptance, with a broad coverage in kinematic phase space, needed for a robust extraction of asymmetries. This, in turn, allows for a precise extraction of sea-quark helicity distributions.
Abstract
Background
Older adults frequently attend the Emergency Department (ED) and experience high rates of adverse outcomes following ED presentation including functional decline, ED ...re-presentation and unplanned hospital admission. The development of effective interventions to prevent such outcomes is a key priority for research and service provision. A presentation to an ED can be viewed as an opportunity to assess those at risk of adverse outcomes and initiate a care plan in those deemed as ‘high risk'. Our aim was to evaluate the feasibility of a physiotherapy led integrated care intervention for older adults discharged from the ED (ED-PLUS).
Methods
Older adults presenting to the ED with undifferentiated medical complaints and discharged within 72 hours were computer randomised in a ratio of 1:1:1 to deliver usual care, Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment (CGA) in the ED, or ED-PLUS (Trial registration: NCT04983602). ED-PLUS is an evidence-based and stakeholder-informed intervention to bridge the care transition between the ED and community by initiating a CGA in the ED and implementing a six-week, multi-component, self-management programme in the patient’s own home. Feasibility (recruitment and retention rates) and acceptability of the programme were assessed quantitatively and qualitatively. Functional decline was examined post-intervention using the Barthel Index. All outcomes were assessed by a research nurse blinded to group allocation.
Results
29 participants were recruited, indicating 97% of our recruitment target. 90% of participants completed the ED-PLUS intervention. All participants expressed positive feedback about the intervention. The incidence of functional decline at 6 weeks was 10% in the ED-PLUS group versus 70-89% in the usual care and CGA-only groups.
Conclusion
High adherence and retention rates were observed among participants and preliminary findings indicate a lower incidence of functional decline in the ED-PLUS group. Recruitment challenges existed in the context of COVID-19. Data collection is ongoing for six-month outcomes.
