Methods
We compiled records of the biogeographic distribution and the vegetation types where A. distichantha occurs based on bibliographic data, digital datasets, herbaria, and personal observations. We associated the distributional records of this species with altitude, five selected bioclimatic variables, four soil variables, and with the vegetation types where it occurs.
Results
A. distichantha has been recorded as epiphytic, terrestrial and saxicolous in all biogeographic domains but showed contrasting patterns in life form proportions among them. In the Amazonian domain, characterized by evergreen tropical and subtropical forests with high precipitation, it mainly grows as epiphytic. In the Chaquenian domain, dominated by xerophytic forests with low rainfall, high soil pH and base saturation, it mainly grows as terrestrial, whereas in the Seasonally Dry Tropical Forest domain, the three life forms were recorded in similar proportions. In azonal plant communities of all domains, it mainly grows as saxicolous.
Main Conclusions
This tank bromeliad species can thrive in sites with contrasting habitat and environmental conditions. Its ability to survive in different environments could be associated with its high frost tolerance, the presence of the CAM photosynthetic pathway, a well‐developed phytotelma, and high phenotypic plasticity. The life form prevailing in each domain is influenced by water availability (i.e., the quantity of water available during each year, the precipitation in the driest month, and the plant water supply relative to demand).
The aim of this paper was to determine the potential of bioethanol production using two rangeland communities dominated by Spartina argentinensis Parodi or Panicum prionitis Ness. and its ...environmental sustainability, considering soil organic carbon and biodiversity measured in two taxa: flowering plants and epigeal soil arthropods. S. argentinensis and P. prionitis biomass production with two different harvest frequencies (every 6 or 12 months) was estimated and compared with control areas. Biomass production did not differ with harvest frequency. Although cell wall fibers composition varied with species and treatment, potential bioethanol production per hectare was not affected and yields were similar to those obtained from other lignocellulosic materials reported in the literature. According to our results, one annual harvest is recommended for both plant communities in order to minimize economic and energy costs. Soil organic carbon showed no statistically significant differences due to treatments in the S. argentinensis community, though differences were found in the middle layer (7.5–15 cm) of the P. prionitis rangeland. The vegetation and arthropods biodiversity indices analyzed (richness, evenness, abundance, and diversity) were not affected by treatments.
•Spartina argentinensis and Panicum prionitis can be considered bioethanol feedstocks.•No land use changes are needed for this bioenergy approach.•This management would not diminish flowering plants and arthropods biodiversity.•Fire management, increasing GHG, could be replaced by bioenergy approach.
During the preparation of the treatment of the genus Celtis for the Neotropical region, some names from Argentina, Bolivia, and Paraguay were found in need of typification. In this context lectotypes ...are designated for six names (Celtis tala fo. obtusata, Celtis tala fo. subtomentosa, Celtis tala fo. subpilosa, Celtis tala fo. velutina, Celtis williamsii, and Momisia flexuosa) and second-step lectotypes for two names (Momisia chichape and Momisia crenata).
Los "pajonales" de Panicum prionitis ("paja de techar") son una de las comunidades de mayor extensión en las islas y el valle de inundación del río Paraná. Debido a sus tasas de crecimiento elevadas ...y a su baja calidad forrajera, tradicionalmente se los maneja con fuego para poder aprovecharlos en la actividad ganadera. El objetivo de este trabajo fue comparar los efectos de la quema y del corte del pajonal de P. prionitis sobre la vegetación (abundancia-cobertura, riqueza, equitatividad y diversidad). Para ello se condujo un experimento con distintos tratamientos: quema, corte (simulando una labor de desmalezado mecánico) y testigo sin disturbar, y se realizaron censos de vegetación durante dos años post-disturbio. P. prionitis mantuvo su condición de especie dominante, independientemente del tratamiento y a lo largo de todo el experimento. Aunque los disturbios alteraron la composición específica, aumentando la riqueza, la equitatividad y la diversidad con respecto al testigo, las diferencias desaparecieron luego de un año de haber aplicado los tratamientos. El corte tuvo el mismo efecto que el fuego, lo cual evidencia una gran resiliencia por parte de la comunidad en estudio.
El género Celtis L. (Celtidaceae) comprende unos 70 taxones de árboles o arbustos de regiones templadas y tropicales. En la Argentina habitan cuatro especies, todas pertenecientes al subgénero ...Mertensia Planch., cuya similitud y variabilidad inter e intraespecíficas han generado confusiones taxonómicas dentro del grupo. Un caso emblemático es el de C. pallida Torr. y C. tala Gillies ex Planch., considerados sinónimos de C. ehrenbergiana (Klotzsch) Liebm. Como estas entidades son claramente diferenciables a campo, se realizó la revisión taxonómica de dichos taxones. Tras un extenso muestreo, un estudio morfológico detallado y a través de un Análisis de Componentes Principales y de Conglomerados, se concluyó que lo considerado en Argentina como C. ehrenbergiana, abarca tres entidades: C. tala, C. pallida var. pallida y C. pallida var. discolor Hunz. & Dottori, y se propone la rehabilitación de dichos taxones. Asimismo, los resultados de los Análisis de la Varianza y de Similitud corroboran diferencias significativas (p-valor < 0.05) entre grupos. Se establecieron como caracteres de mayor importancia taxonómica: porte de los individuos, textura de corteza, pilosidad de láminas, nervaduras y pecíolos, espinas estipulares/ramas espinosas, abundancia y aspecto de domacios. Además, algunos especímenes de C. pallida son morfológicamente intermedios entre ambas variedades, por lo cual su identidad será esclarecida por medio del uso de herramientas moleculares.
The genus Celtis L. (Cannabaceae) comprises around 73 species distributed in temperate and tropical regions of both hemispheres. Most South American species belong to the subgenus Mertensia Planch., ...and they are characterized by showing high morphological plasticity. A recent taxonomic revision of this group was carried out with an excessively reductionist criterion regarding the number of accepted species and that does not clearly reflect the morphological differences among them. In order to contribute to the correct delimitation of the specific entities, a morpho-descriptive approach is presented for ten taxa of the genus Celtis (C. brasiliensis, C. chichape, C. clausseniana, C. fluminensis, C. pallida var. pallida, C pallida var. discolor, C. serratissima, C. spinosa, C. spinosissima and C. tala) growing in South American Southern Cone. The morphology was analyzed through the use of a stereomicroscope and/or the tpsDig program for digital images of specimens. As a result, a key is provided for the determination of the aforementioned species and a detailed morphological description of the vegetative (habit, bark, branches, spines, brachyblasts, indumentum and leaves) and reproductive structures (inflorescences, flowers, fruits and endocarp -pyrene-). In addition, a specimen collection guide is proposed with a list of the main morphological characters that should be observed in the field, to facilitate future identifications.
El género Celtis L. (Cannabaceae) posee unas 73 especies distribuidas en regiones templadas y tropicales de ambos hemisferios. La mayoría de las especies sudamericanas pertenecen al subgénero Mertensia Planch., y se caracterizan por presentar una alta plasticidad morfológica. Una reciente revisión taxonómica del grupo fue realizada con un criterio excesivamente reduccionista en cuanto al número de especies aceptadas y que no refleja claramente las diferencias morfológicas entre ellas. Con el objetivo de contribuir a la correcta delimitación de las entidades específicas, se presenta una aproximación morfodescriptiva para diez taxones del género Celtis (C. brasiliensis, C. chichape, C. clausseniana, C. fluminensis, C. pallida var. pallida, C. pallida var. discolor, C. serratissima, C. spinosa, C. spinosissima y C. tala) que crecen en el Cono Sur de Sudamérica. La morfología se analizó mediante el uso de estereomicroscopio y/o el programa tpsDig para las imágenes digitales de especímenes. Como resultado, se provee una clave para la determinación de las especies mencionadas y una descripción morfológica detallada de las estructuras vegetativas (hábito, corteza, ramas, espinas, braquiblastos, indumento y hojas) y reproductivas (inflorescencias, flores, frutos y endocarpo -pireno-). Además, se propone una guía de colecta listando los principales caracteres morfológicos posibles de observar a campo, para facilitar futuras identificaciones.
Durante el estudio monográfico del género Schinopsis (Anacardiaceae) se realizó una revisión nomenclatural de sus especies y sinónimos. Se lectotipifican los nombres Schinopsis brasiliensis, ...S. brasiliensis var. glabra, S. heterophylla, S. marginata y S. peruviana y se indican algunos casos de lectotipificaciones desapercibidas en trabajos previos. Se designa un epitipo para S. haenkeana, entidad considerada hasta ahora como taxón dudoso.
Infraspecific classification and geographical distribution of Monvillea phatnosperma (Cactaceae). Some aspects of morphology, taxonomy and nomenclature about Monvillea phatnosperma (K. En el presente trabajo se registra por primera vez para la flora argentina la presencia del pequeño árbol Cynophalla polyantha (Triana & Planch.) Cornejo & Iltis (Capparaceae), hallado recientemente ...en el norte de la provincia de Salta, en cercanías de la frontera con la República de Bolivia.
En el marco del estudio del género Opuntia (Cactaceae) para la Argentina se analizaron 10 nombres del grupo: Opuntia anacantha, O. bispinosa, O. brunnescens, O. discolor, O. distans, O. hildemannii, ...O. kiska-loro, O. pampeana, O. sulphurea y O. vulpina.El objetivo fue la designación de lectotipos, neotipos o epitipos, cuando fuera necesario; así como también resolver problemas de estatus nomenclatural o taxonómicos, para cada uno de los taxones. Se consultaron los protólogos de todos los nombres y ejemplares depositados en herbarios, a través de visitas personales o consulta de imágenes disponibles online. Para las tipificaciones se siguieron las reglas y disposiciones del Código Internacional de Nomenclatura (CIN). Se discute y modifica el estatus de los tipos designados previamente para Opuntia anacantha, O. brunnescens, O. discolor, O. distans y O. kiska-loro. Se designan: un lectotipo para O. hildemannii; neotipos para O. pampeana y O. vulpina; y un epitipo para O. sulphurea. Se explica la razón por la cual el nombre O. bispinosa carece de estatus nomenclatural. Además, se proponen dos nuevos sinónimos y una combinación.
