The Bugey 3 neutrino oscillation experiment has provided high statistics neutrino energy spectra recorded at 15 and 40 meters from a nuclear reactor core. Assuming no oscillations, the measured ...spectra favor a model of reactor spectrum based on the beta spectra measured at ILL.
Pathogenic variants in FAM161A are the most common cause of retinitis pigmentosa in Israel. Two founder pathogenic variants explain the vast majority of cases of Jewish origin, 1 being a nonsense ...variant (p.Arg523∗). The aim of this study was to generate a knock-in (KI) mouse model harboring the corresponding p.Arg512∗ pathogenic variant and characterize the course of retinal disease.
Experimental study of a mouse animal model.
A total of 106 Fam161a knock-in mice and 29 wild-type mice with C57BL/6J background particiapted in this study.
Homozygous Fam161a p.Arg512∗ KI mice were generated by Cyagen Biosciences. Visual acuity (VA) was evaluated using optomotor tracking response and retinal function was assessed by electroretinography (ERG). Retinal structure was examined in vivo using OCT and fundus autofluorescence imaging. Retinal morphometry was evaluated by histologic and immunohistochemical (IHC) analyses.

The KI model was generated by replacing 3 bp, resulting in p.Arg512∗. Homozygous KI mice that had progressive loss of VA and ERG responses until the age of 18 months, with no detectable response at 21 months. OCT showed complete loss of the outer nuclear layer at 21 months. Fundus autofluorescence imaging revealed progressive narrowing of blood vessels and formation of patchy hyper-autofluorescent and hypo-autofluorescent spots. Histologic analysis showed progressive loss of photoreceptor nuclei. Immunohistochemistry staining showed Fam161a expression mainly in photoreceptors cilia and the outer plexiform layer (OPL) in WT mice retinas, whereas faint expression was evident mainly in the cilia and OPL of KI mice.
The Fam161a - p.Arg512∗ KI mouse model is characterized by widespread retinal degeneration with relatively slow progression. Surprisingly, disease onset is delayed and progression is slower compared with the previously reported knock-out model. The common human null mutation in the KI mouse model is potentially amenable for correction by translational read-through-inducing drugs and by gene augmentation therapy and RNA editing, and can serve to test these treatments as a first step toward possible application in patients.

The positron-neutron space and time coincidence allows for a sizable ...background rejection, nonetheless liquid scintillator detectors would profit from a positron/electron discrimination, if feasible in large detector, to suppress the remaining background. Standard particle identification, based on particle dependent time profile of photon emission in liquid scintillator, can not be used given the identical mass of the two particles. However, the positron annihilation is sometimes delayed by the ortho-positronium (o-Ps) metastable state formation, which induces a pulse shape distortion that could be used for positron identification. In this paper we report on the first observation of positronium formation in a large liquid scintillator detector based on pulse shape analysis of single events. The o-Ps formation fraction and its lifetime were measured, finding the values of 44 % ±12 % (sys.) ±5 % (stat.) and 3.68 ns ±0.17 ns (sys.) ±0.15 ns (stat.) respectively, in agreement with the results obtained with a dedicated positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy setup.

Be solar neutrinos of all flavors via neutrino–electron scattering in an ultra-pure scintillation liquid. Seeded by a series of innovations which were brought to fruition by large-scale operation of a 4-ton test detector at LNGS, a new technology has been developed for Borexino. It enables sub-MeV solar neutrino spectroscopy for the first time. This paper describes the design of Borexino, the various facilities essential to its operation, its spectroscopic and background suppression capabilities and a prognosis of the impact of its results towards resolving the solar neutrino problem. Borexino will also address several other frontier questions in particle physics, astrophysics and geophysics.
Using the Double Chooz detector, designed to measure the neutrino mixing angle $\theta_{13}$, the products of $\mu^-$ capture on $^{12}$C, $^{13}$C, $^{14}$N and $^{16}$O have been measured. Over a ...period of 489.5 days, $2.3\times10^6$ stopping cosmic $\mu^-$ have been collected, of which $1.8\times10^5$ captured on carbon, nitrogen, or oxygen nuclei in the inner detector scintillator or acrylic vessels. The resulting isotopes were tagged using prompt neutron emission (when applicable), the subsequent beta decays, and, in some cases, $\beta$-delayed neutrons. The most precise measurement of the rate of $^{12}\mathrm C(\mu^-,\nu)^{12}\mathrm B$ to date is reported: $6.57^{+0.11}_{-0.21}\times10^{3}\,\mathrm s^{-1}$, or $(17.35^{+0.35}_{-0.59})\%$ of nuclear captures. By tagging excited states emitting gammas, the ground state transition rate to $^{12}$B has been determined to be $5.68^{+0.14}_{-0.23}\times10^3\,\mathrm s^{-1}$. The heretofore unobserved reactions $^{12}\mathrm C(\mu^-,\nu\alpha)^{8}\mathrm{Li}$, $^{13}\mathrm C(\mu^-,\nu\mathrm n\alpha)^{8}\mathrm{Li}$, and $^{13}\mathrm C(\mu^-,\nu\mathrm n)^{12}\mathrm B$ are measured. Further, a population of $\beta$n decays following stopping muons is identified with $5.5\sigma$ significance. Statistics limit our ability to identify these decays definitively. Assuming negligible production of $^{8}$He, the reaction $^{13}\mathrm C(\mu^-,\nu\alpha)^{9}\mathrm{Li}$ is found to be present at the $2.7\sigma$ level. Limits are set on a variety of other processes.
The Double Chooz collaboration presents a measurement of the neutrino mixing angle $\theta_{13}$ using reactor $\overline{\nu}_{e}$ observed via the inverse beta decay reaction in which the neutron ...is captured on hydrogen. This measurement is based on 462.72 live days data, approximately twice as much data as in the previous such analysis, collected with a detector positioned at an average distance of 1050m from two reactor cores. Several novel techniques have been developed to achieve significant reductions of the backgrounds and systematic uncertainties. Accidental coincidences, the dominant background in this analysis, are suppressed by more than an order of magnitude with respect to our previous publication by a multi-variate analysis. These improvements demonstrate the capability of precise measurement of reactor $\overline{\nu}_{e}$ without gadolinium loading. Spectral distortions from the $\overline{\nu}_{e}$ reactor flux predictions previously reported with the neutron capture on gadolinium events are confirmed in the independent data sample presented here. A value of $\sin^{2}2\theta_{13} = 0.095^{+0.038}_{-0.039}$(stat+syst) is obtained from a fit to the observed event rate as a function of the reactor power, a method insensitive to the energy spectrum shape. A simultaneous fit of the hydrogen capture events and of the gadolinium capture events yields a measurement of $\sin^{2}2\theta_{13} = 0.088\pm0.033$(stat+syst).
Despite the fact that the electric charge conservation law is confirmed by many experiments, search for its possible violation remains a way of searching for physics beyond the Standard Model. ...Experimental searches for the electric charge non-conservation mainly consider electron decays into neutral particles. The Borexino experiment is an excellent tool for the electron decay search due to the highest radiopurity among all the existing experiments, large detector mass, and good sensitivity at low energies. The process considered in this study is a decay into a photon and a neutrino, for which a new lower limit on the electron lifetime is obtained. This is the best electron lifetime limit up to date, exceeding the previous one obtained at the Borexino prototype at two orders of magnitude.
The Double Chooz experiment presents improved measurements of the neutrino mixing angle θ13 using the data collected in 467.90 live days from a detector positioned at an average distance of 1050 m ...from two reactor cores at the Chooz nuclear power plant. Several novel techniques have been developed to achieve significant reductions of the backgrounds and systematic uncertainties with respect to previous publications, whereas the efficiency of the ν¯¯¯e signal has increased. The value of θ13 is measured to be sin2 2θ13 = 0.090+ 0.032− 0.029 from a fit to the observed energy spectrum. Deviations from the reactor ν¯¯¯e prediction observed above a prompt signal energy of 4 MeV and possible explanations are also reported. A consistent value of θ13 is obtained from a fit to the observed rate as a function of the reactor power independently of the spectrum shape and background estimation, demonstrating the robustness of the θ13 measurement despite the observed distortion.
The aim of the SOX experiment is to test the hypothesis of existence of light sterile neutrinos trough a short baseline experiment. Electron antineutrinos will be produced by an high activity source ...and detected in the Borexino experiment. Both an oscillometry approach and a conventional disappearance analysis will be performed and, if combined, SOX will be able to investigate most of the anomaly region at 95% c.l. This paper focuses on the improvements performed on the simulation code and on the techniques (calibrations) used to validate the results.
The Borexino detector has convincingly shown its outstanding performance in the in the sub-MeV regime through its unprecedented accomplishments in the solar and geo-neutrinos detection, which make it ...the ideal tool to unambiguously test the long-standing issue of the existence of a sterile neutrino, as suggested by several anomalies: the outputs of the LSND and Miniboone experiments, the results of the source calibration of the two Gallium solar ν experiments, and the recently hinted reactor anomaly. The SOX project will exploit two sources, based on chromium and cerium, which deployed under the experiment will emit two intense beams of νe (Cr) and νe‾ (Ce). Interacting in the active volume of the liquid scintillator, each beam would create a spatial wave pattern in case of oscillation of the νe (or νe‾) into the sterile state, which would be the smoking gun proving the existence of the new sterile member of the neutrino family. Otherwise, its absence will allow setting very stringent limit on its existence.
