Two groups of bacterial strains, isolated from the tissue of rotted parsley root were investigated. Results of preliminary test (gram reaction, fluorescence on Kings medium B, levan production, ...oxidase activity, potato rot, tobacco hypersensitivity, pathogenicity on parsley root slices), showed that the strains of the first group belong to the bacterium Erwinia carotovora, while the strains of the second group to genus Pseudomonas or to bacteria closely related.
The authors review anatomical facts significant for preoperative planning of implant procedures in the mandible. This planning includes the precise evaluation of distinct anatomical factors, such as ...the position of the mandibular canal, the width of the mandibular cortical plates and the degree of involutive changes of the inferior dental artery. The mandibular canal is usually situated centrally in the mandibular corpus, slightly closer to the lingual cortex in its distal parts; towards the front, it approaches the vestibular cortical layer. Mesially from the mental foramen, a clearly defined incisive canal is present in only one third of the edentate mandibles. Mandibular corpus of the edentate mandibles consists of cancellous bone enclosed by a shell of compact cortical bone. Cortical layers demonstrate significant variations in width; nevertheless, the widths of lateral cortical layers, generally, enable safe placement of endosseous implants. Finally, in patient's preoperative assessment, involutive changes of the inferior dental artery should also be considered. During the involution of the mandibular alveolar process, it shows changes of direction and calibre, changes in arborization and, sometimes, complete occlusion of the main trunk. The degree of these involutive changes points out the mandibular vascular supply and the regenerative capacity of the tissues needed for the success of the implant procedure.
Possibilities of the usage of a polyvalent culture - Streptococcus lactis Ak-60 and Micrococcus sp. M-104 in industrial white cheese production with a lower fat content and vacuum-packed maturing in ...plastic sheets were investigated. The obtained results showed that this polyvalent culture could be recommended for the maturation of the examined cheese type.
Primary malignant liver tumors are successfully treated only by means of surgery, but no more than 10% of patients are candidates for surgical intervention. The rest receive only palliative treatment ...which is, as a rule, unsuccessful. 131I-Lipiodol therapy (commercial label LIPIOCISTM) applied to the hepatic artery through a catheter has been used since 1984, primarily for treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The aim of this paper is to review the methodology of 131J-Lipiodol treatment of primary liver carcinomas. This treatment was applied for the first time in Yugoslavia.
A female patient, 46 years of age had an inoperable primary liver carcinoma. Since progression of the disease couldn't be controlled by chemotherapy, treatment with 131I-Lipiodol was indicated. After blocking the thyroid with Lugol, Sol. 2.22 GBq of 131I-Lipiodol was injected into hepatic artery via catheter, and the patient was isolated in a designated facility until discharged. Around 5 months later, second therapeutic dose of 1.11 GBq was administered. Early post-therapy complications were severe, but transient. After 131I-Lipiodol therapy, the tumor growth was stopped, but the patient's general condition slowly deteriorated. The patient died 7 months after receiving the first therapeutic dose.
In the reported patient, 131I-Lipiodol therapy stopped the tumor growth within the liver and significantly prolonged survival compared to the expected, but no improvement in quality of life was achieved. This treatment methodology is very complex. Medical staff providing care for these patients is exposed to substantial irradiation.
The aim of this work was to estimate the significance of a dynamic study performed during the first 20 minutes after autologous (111)In-oxinate-platelets injection in patients with chronic immune ...thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP). Two hypotheses were tested: a) dynamic study indicates the place of platelet sequestration; b) dynamic study reflects the quality of platelet separation and labelling procedure.
Thirty-nine persons were investigated: 25 with shortened platelet life span (ITP), and 14 with normal platelet life span (6 healthy subjects and eight patients with myelodysplastic syndrome--MDS). Platelet blood count on the day of platelet labelling, general yield of platelet labelling (GYL), differential yield of platelet labelling (DYL), platelet life span, dynamic study with initial platelet accumulation in the liver (IPAL), sequential static study for determining the platelet sequestration index (SI) and platelet sequestration site (SS) were investigated.
Two types of labelled platelet kinetics were determined in both groups of patients: IPAL < 20% and IPAL > 20%. A statistically significant difference in GYL and DYL was noted between the patients with IPAL < 20% and IPAL > 20%. No significant difference was registered in platelet blood count, life span, SS and SI between the two groups of patients. Both yields of platelet labelling were higher in the group with IPAL < 20%. There was no correlation between IPAL and platelet SI, or between IPAL and platelet SS.
Dynamic study with (111)In-platelets cannot predict platelet sequestration site in ITP patients, but it is a useful and sensitive method of platelet labelling procedure quality control.
