An experiment to search for light sterile neutrinos is conducted at a reactor with a thermal power of 2.8 GW located at the Hanbit nuclear power complex. The search is done with a detector consisting ...of a ton of Gd-loaded liquid scintillator in a tendon gallery approximately 24 m from the reactor core. The measured antineutrino event rate is 1976 per day with a signal to background ratio of about 22. The shape of the antineutrino energy spectrum obtained from the eight-month data-taking period is compared with a hypothesis of oscillations due to active-sterile antineutrino mixing. No strong evidence of 3+1 neutrino oscillation is found. An excess around the 5 MeV prompt energy range is observed as seen in existing longer-baseline experiments. The mixing parameter sin^{2}2θ_{14} is limited up to less than 0.1 for Δm_{41}^{2} ranging from 0.2 to 2.3 eV^{2} with a 90% confidence level.
Paclitaxel is currently only available as an intravenous (i.v.) formulation. DHP107 is a novel oral formulation of lipid ingredients and paclitaxel. DHP107 demonstrated comparable efficacy, safety, ...and pharmacokinetics to i.v. paclitaxel as a second-line therapy in patients with advanced gastric cancer (AGC). DREAM is a multicenter, open-label, prospective, randomized phase III study of patients with histologically/cytologically confirmed, unresectable/recurrent AGC after first-line therapy failure.
Patients were randomized 1:1 to DHP107 (200mg/m2 orally twice daily days 1, 8, 15 every 4weeks) or i.v. paclitaxel (175mg/m2 day 1 every 3weeks). Patients were stratified by Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status, disease status, and prior treatment; response was assessed (Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors) every 6weeks. Primary end point: non-inferiority of progression-free survival (PFS); secondary end points: overall response rate (ORR), overall survival (OS), and safety. For the efficacy analysis, sequential tests for non-inferiority were carried out, first with a non-inferiority margin of 1.48, then with a margin of 1.25.
Baseline characteristics were balanced in the 236 randomized patients (n=118 per arm). Median PFS (per-protocol) was 3.0 (95% CI 1.7–4.0) months for DHP107 and 2.6 (95% CI 1.8–2.8) months for paclitaxel (hazard ratio HR=0.85; 95% CI 0.64–1.13). A sensitivity analysis on PFS using independent central review showed similar results (HR=0.93; 95% CI 0.70–1.24). Median OS (full analysis set) was 9.7 (95% CI 7.1−11.5) months for DHP107 versus 8.9 (95% CI 7.1–12.2) months for paclitaxel (HR=1.04; 95% CI 0.76–1.41). ORR was 17.8% for DHP107 (CR 4.2%; PR 13.6%) versus 25.4% for paclitaxel (CR 3.4%; PR 22.0%). Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and mucositis were more common with DHP107; peripheral neuropathy was more common with paclitaxel. There were only few Grade≥3 adverse events, most commonly neutropenia (42% versus 53%); febrile neutropenia was reported infrequently (5.9% versus 2.5%). No hypersensitivity reactions occurred with DHP107 (paclitaxel 2.5%).
DHP107 as a second-line treatment of AGC was non-inferior to paclitaxel for PFS; other efficacy and safety parameters were comparable. DHP107 is the first oral paclitaxel with proven efficacy/safety for the treatment of AGC.

Purpose
The da Vinci SP® (dVSP) surgical system (Intuitive Surgical, Sunnyvale, CA, USA), a robotic platform designed for single-incision surgery, overcame the need for multiple ports in traditional ...robotic surgery and issues including triangulation and retraction in single-incision laparoscopic surgery. However, previous studies only included case reports or series with small sample sizes. The aim of this study was to assess the safety and performance of the dVSP surgical system and its instruments and accessories for colorectal procedures.
Methods
The medical records of patients who had surgery with the dVSP from March 2019 to September 2021 at Ewha Womans University Seoul Hospital were investigated. The pathologic and follow-up data of patients who had malignant tumors were analyzed separately to evaluate oncological safety.
Results
Fifty patients (26 male and 24 female) with a median age of 59 years (interquartile range 52.5–63.0 years) were enrolled. The procedures included low anterior resection with total mesorectal excision (
n
= 16), sigmoid colectomy with complete mesocolic excision and central vessel ligation (CME + CVL) (
n
= 14), right colectomy with CME + CVL (
n
= 9), left colectomy with CME + CVL (
n
= 4), right colectomy (
n
= 6), and sigmoid colectomy (
n
= 1). Operative time significantly decreased after 25 cases (early phase vs. late phase; operative time 295.0 min vs. 250.0 min,
p
= 0.015; docking time 16.0 min vs. 12.0 min,
p
= 0.001; console time 212.0 min vs. 190.0 min,
p
= 0.019). Planned procedures were successfully completed in all patients. Postoperative outcomes were acceptable with only six cases of mild adverse events through a 3-month follow-up. No local recurrence and only one case of systemic recurrence occurred within 1 year postoperatively.
Conclusions
This study demonstrated the surgical and oncological safety and feasibility of dVSP, which may be a novel surgical platform for colorectal surgery.
The structural similarity of eugenol with capsaicin suggests that these two agents may share molecular mechanisms to produce their effects. We investigated the effects of eugenol in comparison with ...those of capsaicin using whole-cell patch clamp and Fura-2-based calcium-imaging techniques in a heterologous expression system and with sensory neurons. In vanilloid receptor 1 (VR1)-expressing human embryonic kidney (HEK) 293 cells and trigeminal ganglion (TG) neurons, eugenol activated inward currents, whereas capsazepine, a competitive VR antagonist, and ruthenium red (RR), a functional VR antagonist, completely blocked eugenol-induced inward currents. Moreover, eugenol caused elevation of Ca2+i, and this was completely abolished by both capsazepine and ruthenium red in VR1-expressing HEK 293 cells and TG neurons. Our results provide strong evidence that eugenol produces its effects, at least in part, via VR1 expressed by the sensory nerve endings in the teeth.
SETTING: Multicentre study.OBJECTIVE: To define the clinical characteristics of patients with tuberculosis (TB) destroyed lung due to past TB.DESIGN: We reviewed patients with TB-destroyed lung ...between May 2005 and June 2011.RESULTS: A total of 595 patients from 21 hospitals
were enrolled. The mean age was 65.63 ± 0.47 (mean ± standard error); 60.5% were male. The mean number of lobes involved was 2.59 ± 0.05. Pleural thickening was observed in 54.1% of the patients. Mean forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1),
FEV1/FVC, bronchodilator response and number of exacerbations per year were respectively 2.06 ± 0.03 l (61.26% ± 0.79), 1.16 ± 0.02 l (49.05% ± 0.84), 58.03% ± 0.70, 5.70% ± 0.34, and 0.40 ± 0.04. The number of lobes involved was
significantly correlated with FVC and FEV1, and with the number of exacerbations per year. Use of long-acting muscarinic antagonists or long-acting beta-2 agonists plus inhaled corticosteroids resulted in bronchodilatory effects. Multivariable regression analysis showed that age,
initial FEV1 (%) and number of exacerbations during follow-up were independent factors affecting change in FEV1.CONCLUSION: Decreased lung function with exacerbation, and progressive decline of FEV1 were observed in patients with TB-destroyed lung.
Milk protein is a well-known precursor protein for the generation of bioactive peptides using lactic acid bacteria. This study investigated the antioxidant activity of bovine casein hydrolysate after ...fermentation with Bifidobacterium longum KACC91563 using the 2,2′-azinobis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) assay and total phenolic content (TPC). The antioxidant activities of the 24-h and 48-h hydrolysates were higher than that of the 4-h hydrolysate (2,045.5 and 1,629.3μM gallic acid equivalents, respectively, vs. 40.3μM) in the ABTS assay. In contrast, TPC values showed activities of 43.2 and 52.4μM gallic acid equivalents for the 4-h and 24-h hydrolysates, respectively. Three fractions (≥10kDa, ≥3 but <10kDa, and <3kDa) were separated from the 24-h hydrolysate by ultrafiltration. Among these fractions, the <3kDa fraction exhibited the highest antioxidant activity (936.7μM) compared with the other fractions (42.1 and 34.2μM for >10kDa and 3–10kDa fractions, respectively). Through liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization-tandem mass spectrometry analysis, 2 peptides, VLSLSQSKVLPVPQK and VLSLSQSKVLPVPQKAVPYPQRDMPIQA, containing the fragment VLPVPQ that has antioxidant properties, were identified in the <3kDa fraction after 24h of hydrolysis. The present study demonstrates the possibility of antioxidant peptide production from bovine casein using Bifidobacterium longum.
To investigate whether simple and non-invasive measurement of N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) and/or C-reactive protein (CRP) can predict perioperative major cardiovascular event ...(PMCE).
Prospective, single-centre, cohort study.
A 1900-bed tertiary-care university hospital in Seoul, Korea Design and
The predictive power of NT-proBNP, CRP and Revised Cardiac Risk Index (RCRI) for the risk of PMCE (myocardial infarction, pulmonary oedema or cardiovascular death) were evaluated from a prospective cohort of 2054 elective major non-cardiac surgery patients. Optimal cut-off values were derived from receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) analysis.
PMCE (myocardial infarction, pulmonary oedema or cardiovascular death) within postoperative 30 days.
PMCE developed in a total of 290 patients (14.1%). Each increasing quartile of NT-proBNP or CRP level was associated with a greater risk of PMCE after adjustment for traditional clinical risk factors. The relative risk (RR) of highest versus lowest quartile was 5.2 for NT-proBNP (p<0.001) and 3.7 for CRP (p<0.001). Both NT-proBNP (cut-off = 301 ng/l) and CRP (cut-off = 3.4 mg/l) predicted PMCE better than RCRI (cut-off = 2) by ROC analysis (p<0.001). Moreover, the predictive power of RCRI (adjusted RR = 1.5) could be improved significantly by addition of CRP and NT-proBNP to RCRI (adjusted RR 4.6) (p<0.001).
High preoperative NT-proBNP or CRP is a strong and independent predictor of perioperative major cardiovascular event in non-cardiac surgery. The predictive power of current clinical risk evaluation system would be strengthened by these biomarkers.
Spinal cord injury (SCI) is one of the most challenging clinical issues. It is characterized by the disruption of neural circuitry and connectivity, resulting in neurological disability. ...Adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs) serve as a promising source of therapeutic cells for SCI treatment. However, the therapeutic outcomes of direct ADSCs transplantation are limited in the presence of an inflammatory microenvironment. Herein, a cell-adaptable neurogenic (CaNeu) hydrogel was developed as a delivery vehicle for ADSCs to promote neuronal regeneration after SCI. The dynamic network of CaNeu hydrogel loaded with ADSCs provides a cell-infiltratable matrix that enhances axonal growth and eventually leads to improved motor evoked potential, hindlimb strength, and coordination of complete spinal cord transection in rats. Furthermore, the CaNeu hydrogel also establishes an anti-inflammatory microenvironment by inducing a shift in the polarization of the recruited macrophages toward the pro-regeneration (M2) phenotype. Our study showed that the CaNeu-hydrogel‒mediated ADSCs delivery resulted in significantly suppressed neuroinflammation and apoptosis, and that this phenomenon involved the PI3K/Akt signaling pathway. Our findings indicate that the CaNeu hydrogel is a valuable delivery vehicle to assist stem cell therapy for SCI, providing a promising strategy for central nervous system diseases.
