Abstract
Surface lattice reconstruction is commonly observed in nickel-rich layered oxide battery cathode materials, causing unsatisfactory high-voltage cycling performance. However, the interplay of ...the surface chemistry and the bulk microstructure remains largely unexplored due to the intrinsic structural complexity and the lack of integrated diagnostic tools for a thorough investigation at complementary length scales. Herein, by combining nano-resolution X-ray probes in both soft and hard X-ray regimes, we demonstrate correlative surface chemical mapping and bulk microstructure imaging over a single charged LiNi

(NMC811) secondary particle. We reveal that the sub-particle regions with more micro cracks are associated with more severe surface degradation. A mechanism of mutual modulation between the surface chemistry and the bulk microstructure is formulated based on our experimental observations and finite element modeling. Such a surface-to-bulk reaction coupling effect is fundamentally important for the design of the next generation battery cathode materials.
External control of the conductivity of correlated oxides is one of the most promising schemes for realizing energy-efcient electronic devices. Vanadium dioxide (VO2), an archetypal correlated oxide ...compound, undergoes a temperature-driven metalinsulator transition near room temperature with a concomitant change in crystal symmetry. Here, we show that the metalinsulator transition temperature of thin VO2(001) lms can be changed continuously from 285 to 345 K by varying the thickness of the RuO2 buffer layer (resulting in different epitaxial strains). Using strain-, polarizationand temperature-dependent X-ray absorption spectroscopy, in combination with X-ray diffraction and electronic transport measurements, we demonstrate that the transition temperature and the structural distortion across the transition depend on the orbital occupancy in the metallic state. Our ndings open up the possibility of controlling the conductivity in atomically thin VO2 layers by manipulating the orbital occupancy by, for example, heterostructural engineering. We have studied spin transport and magnetoresistance in yttrium iron garnet (YIG)/NiO/Pt trilayers with varied NiO thickness. To characterize the spin transport through NiO we excite ferromagnetic ...resonance in YIG with a microwave frequency magnetic field and detect the voltage associated with the inverse spin-Hall effect (ISHE) in the Pt layer. The ISHE signal is found to decay exponentially with the NiO thickness with a characteristic decay length of 3.9 nm. This is contrasted with the magnetoresistance in these same structures. The symmetry of the magnetoresistive response is consistent with spin-Hall magnetoresistance (SMR). However, in contrast to the ISHE response, as the NiO thickness increases the SMR signal goes towards zero abruptly at a NiO thickness of ≃ 4 nm, highlighting the different length scales associated with the spin-transport in NiO and SMR in such trilayers.
Abstract
We present the element-specific and time resolved visualization of uniform ferromagnetic resonance excitations of a Permalloy (Py) disk–Cobalt (Co) stripe bilayer microstructure. The ...transverse high frequency component of the resonantly excited magnetization is sampled in the ps regime by a combination of ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) and scanning transmission X-ray microscopy (STXM-FMR) recording snapshots of the local magnetization precession of Py and Co with nanometer spatial resolution. The approach allows us to individually image the resonant dynamic response of each element, and we find that angular momentum is transferred from the Py disk to the Co stripe and vice versa at their respective resonances. The integral (cavity) FMR spectrum of our sample shows an unexpected additional third resonance. This resonance is observed in the STXM-FMR experiments as well. Our microscopic findings suggest that it is governed by magnetic exchange between Py and Co, showing for the Co stripe a difference in relative phase of the magnetization due to stray field influence.

. The particles are probed with 25 nm resolution at the Fe L

x-ray absorption edge in response to a microwave excitation of 4.07 GHz. A plethora of resonance modes is observed within multiple particle segments oscillating in- and out-of-phase, well resembled by micromagnetic simulations.
Light-matter interaction at the nanoscale in magnetic materials is a topic of intense research in view of potential applications in next-generation high-density magnetic recording. Laser-assisted ...switching provides a pathway for overcoming the material constraints of high-anisotropy and high-packing density media, though much about the dynamics of the switching process remains unexplored. We use ultrafast small-angle X-ray scattering at an X-ray free-electron laser to probe the magnetic switching dynamics of FePt nanoparticles embedded in a carbon matrix following excitation by an optical femtosecond laser pulse. We observe that the combination of laser excitation and applied static magnetic field, 1 order of magnitude smaller than the coercive field, can overcome the magnetic anisotropy barrier between “up” and “down” magnetization, enabling magnetization switching. This magnetic switching is found to be inhomogeneous throughout the material with some individual FePt nanoparticles neither switching nor demagnetizing. The origin of this behavior is identified as the near-field modification of the incident laser radiation around FePt nanoparticles. The fraction of not-switching nanoparticles is influenced by the heat flow between FePt and a heat-sink layer.
The chiral induced spin selectivity (CISS) effect in which selective transport of electron spins through helical chiral molecules occurs, has attracted a lot of attention in recent years. This effect ...was used to magnetize ferromagnetic (FM) samples by utilizing adsorbed chiral molecules. The electron transfer through the molecules was generated optically or electrically. In the optical configuration, circularly polarized light induced efficient magnetization by spin torque transfer (STT), using a hybrid of quantum dots (QDs) and chiral molecule self-assembled monolayer (SAM). Here, we use X-ray magnetic chiral dichroism (XMCD) spectroscopy in order to probe the optically induced magnetization on thin FM films. The results show differences in the FM magnetization depending on the optical circular polarization, matching previous non-local Hall probe measurements.
