Evidence for a narrow baryon state is found in quasi-real photoproduction on a deuterium target through the decay channel pK0S→pπ+π−. A peak is observed in the pK0S invariant mass spectrum at ...1528±2.6(stat)±2.1(syst) MeV. Depending on the background model, the naive statistical significance of the peak is 4–6 standard deviations and its width may be somewhat larger than the experimental resolution of σ=4.3–6.2 MeV. This state may be interpreted as the predicted S=+1 exotic Θ+(uudds̄) pentaquark baryon. No signal for an hypothetical Θ++ baryon was observed in the pK+ invariant mass distribution. The absence of such a signal indicates that an isotensor Θ is excluded and an isovector Θ is unlikely.
BG60 is an important allergen of Bermuda grass (Cynodon dactylon) pollen, which causes allergic responses in human. It was suggested that its carbohydrate moiety may be relevant to allergic reaction ...(Su, S.N., Lau, G.X., Shu, P., Yang, S.Y., Huang, S.W., and Lee, Y.C. (1996) J. Allergy Clin. Immunol., in press). Therefore, the structure of the carbohydrate moiety in BG60 was investigated. The N- linked oligosaccharides were released from the glycopeptides of BG60 by digesting with a glycoamidase from sweet almond and reductively aminated with a fluorescent reagent, 2-aminopyridine. The mixture of pyridylaminated oligosaccharides were separated by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) using an octadecylsilyl (ODS) column. Five oligosaccharide fractions were isolated, and each fraction was found to be homogeneous by HPLC on an amide-silica column. The structure of each of the oligosaccharides was analyzed by the two-dimensional mapping technique (Tomiya, N., Awaya, J., Kurono, M., Endo, S., Arata, Y., and Takahashi, N. (1988) Anal. Biochem. 171, 73-90), in tandem with sequential exoglycosidase digestion. The two most abundant oligosaccharides, A and B, have an unusual structural feature, i.e. the presence of an L-Fuc alpha-(1,3)-linked to Asn-linked GlcNAc without a Xyl beta-(1,2)-linked to the branching Man (see below). To the best of our knowledge, these are the first such oligosaccharides found in plant glycoproteins. (...).
The Gain Monitoring System (GMS) provides real-time gain monitoring of the photomultipliers of the HERMES experiment, using a Nd:YAG laser with a wavelength of 532 nm as the light source. The system ...sends light pulses via an optical fiber network to the detectors equipped with photomultiplier tubes (PMTs), as well as to an array of reference detectors. Light pulses of different intensities are obtained by rotating a wheel carrying several attenuation plates in front of the light source. This permits the monitoring of the large dynamic range of ADC signals from the detectors, as well as the linearity of the PMT responses.
A measurement of the beam-spin asymmetry in the azimuthal distribution of pions produced in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering off protons is presented. The measurement was performed using the ...HERMES spectrometer with a hydrogen gas target and the longitudinally polarized 27.6 GeV positron beam of HERA. The sinusoidal amplitude of the dependence of the asymmetry on the angle ϕ of the hadron production plane around the virtual photon direction relative to the lepton scattering plane was measured for π+, π− and π0 mesons. The dependence of this amplitude on the Bjorken scaling variable and on the pion fractional energy and transverse momentum is presented. The results are compared to theoretical model calculations.
The HERMES hydrogen and deuterium nuclear-polarized gas targets have been in use since 1996 with the polarized electron beam of HERA at DESY to study the spin structure of the nucleon. Polarized ...atoms from a Stern–Gerlach Atomic Beam Source are injected into a storage cell internal to the HERA electron ring. Atoms diffusing from the center of the storage cell into a side tube are analyzed to determine the atomic fraction and the atomic polarizations. The atoms have a nuclear polarization, the axis of which is defined by an external magnetic holding field. The holding field was longitudinal during 1996–2000, and was changed to transverse in 2001. The design of the target is described, the method for analyzing the target polarization is outlined, and the performance of the target in the various running periods is presented.
Single-spin asymmetries have been measured for semi-inclusive electroproduction of π+, π−, π0 and K+ mesons in deep-inelastic scattering off a longitudinally polarised deuterium target. The ...asymmetries appear in the distribution of the hadrons in the azimuthal angle φ around the virtual photon direction, relative to the lepton scattering plane. The corresponding analysing powers in the sinφ moment of the cross section are 0.012±0.002(stat.)±0.002(syst.) for π+, 0.006±0.003(stat.)±0.002(syst.) for π−, 0.021±0.005(stat.)±0.003(syst.) for π0 and 0.013±0.006(stat.)±0.003(syst.) for K+. The sin2φ moments are compatible with zero for all particles.
Double-spin asymmetries of semiinclusive cross sections for the production of identified pions and kaons have been measured in deep inelastic scattering of polarized positrons on a polarized ...deuterium target. Five helicity distributions including those for three sea quark flavors were extracted from these data together with reanalyzed previous data for identified pions from a hydrogen target. These distributions are consistent with zero for all three sea flavors. A recently predicted flavor asymmetry in the polarization of the light quark sea appears to be disfavored by the data.
Single-spin asymmetries in the semi-inclusive production of charged pions in deep-inelastic scattering from transversely and longitudinally polarized proton targets are combined to evaluate the ...subleading-twist contribution to the longitudinal case. This contribution is significantly positive for π+ mesons and dominates the asymmetries on a longitudinally polarized target previously measured by Hermes. The subleading-twist contribution for π− mesons is found to be small.
