This study aimed to identify distribution of metals and the influential factors on metal concentrations in incineration residues. Bottom ash and fly ash were sampled from 19 stoker and seven ...fluidized bed incinerators, which were selected to have a variety of furnace capacity, furnace temperature, and input waste. In the results, shredded bulky waste in input waste increased the concentration of some metals, such as Cd and Pb, and the effect was confirmed by analysis of shredded bulky waste. During MSW incineration, lithophilic metals such as Fe, Cu, Cr, and Al remained mainly in the bottom ash while Cd volatilized from the furnace and condensed to the fly ash. About two thirds of Pb and Zn was found in the bottom ash despite their high volatility. Finally, based on the results obtained in this study, the amount of metal in incineration residues of MSW was calculated and the loss of metal was estimated in terms of mass and money. A considerable amount of metal was found to be lost as waste material by landfilling of incineration residues.
The Solar Intensity X-ray and particle Spectrometer (SIXS) on the BepiColombo Mercury Planetary Orbiter (“Bepi”) measures the direct solar X-rays, energetic protons, and electrons that bombard, and ...interact with, the Hermean surface. The interactions result in X-ray fluorescence and scattering, and particle induced X-ray emission (PIXE), i.e. “glow” of the surface in X-rays. Simultaneous monitoring of the incident and emitted radiation enables derivation of the abundances of some chemical elements and scattering properties of the outermost surface layer of the planet, and it may reveal other sources of X-ray emission, due to, for example, weak aurora-like phenomena in Mercury’s exosphere. Mapping of the Hermean X-ray emission is the main task of the MIXS instrument onboard BepiColombo. SIXS data will also be used for investigations of the solar X-ray corona and solar energetic particles (SEP), both in the cruise phase and the passes of the Earth, Venus and Mercury before the arrival at Mercury’s orbit, and the final science phase at Mercury’s orbit. These observations provide the first-ever opportunity for in-situ measurements of the propagation of SEPs, their interactions with the interplanetary magnetic field, and space weather phenomena in multiple locations throughout the inner solar system far away from the Earth, and more extensively at Mercury’s orbit.
In this paper we describe the scientific objectives, design and calibrations, operational principles, and scientific performance of the final SIXS instrument launched to the mission to planet Mercury onboard BepiColombo. We also provide the first analysis results of science observations with SIXS, that were made during the Near-Earth Commissioning Phase and early cruise phase operations in 2018–19, including the background X-ray sky observations and “first light” observations of the Sun with the SIXS X-ray detection system (SIXS-X), and in-situ energetic electron and proton observations with the SIXS Particle detection system (SIXS-P).
Method of synthesis of high-quality thin films of Fe chalcogenides, Fe(Te,Se) and FeSe is studied. By investigating the correlation between T c and structural parameters, it is concluded that a ...compressive strain is introduced on the films on CaF2 substrate, which leads to an increase of T c than on oxide substrates. Properties both in the normal state and in the superconducting state are measured. Results are discussed in terms of the possibility of further increasing T c of this material.
Abstract Although the hippocampus is a brain region involved in short-term memory, the molecular mechanisms underlying memory formation are not completely understood. Here we show that sphingosine ...1-phosphate (S1P) plays a pivotal role in the formation of memory. Addition of S1P to rat hippocampal slices increased the rate of AMPA receptor-mediated miniature excitatory postsynaptic currents (mEPSCs) recorded from the CA3 region of the hippocampus. In addition long-term potentiation (LTP) observed in the CA3 region was potently inhibited by a sphingosine kinase (SphK) inhibitor and this inhibition was fully reversed by S1P. LTP was impaired in hippocampal slices specifically in the CA3 region obtained from SphK1-knockout mice, which correlates well with the poor performance of these animals in the Morris water maze test. These results strongly suggest that SphK/S1P receptor signaling plays an important role in excitatory synaptic transmission in the CA3 region of hippocampus and has profound effects on hippocampal function such as spatial learning.
Although the complications of intravesical BCG treatment are well described, asymptomatic genitourinary granulomas after BCG therapy have rarely been reported and management strategy for these ...conditions remains controversial. The objective of this study is to evaluate the incidence rate of asymptomatic genitourinary granuloma formation mimicking bladder cancer recurrence after intravesical bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) therapy and to identify the diagnostic and treatment strategies according to patient conditions.
A retrospective review was conducted on 162 patients who underwent intravesical BCG therapy. For patients who developed granulomas, we evaluated the time interval between BCG instillation and the development of granuloma, the presence of acid-fast bacteria on pathology specimens, culture/polymerase chain reaction results, management strategies for the lesions, and clinical outcomes.
Asymptomatic genitourinary masses developed in 14 patients, of whom 5 underwent histological examinations and all were confirmed to have granulomatous inflammation. The affected organs included the kidney, bladder, prostate, and penis. While four of the five patients did not receive treatment for their granulomas, one patient was administered antituberculous medication to prevent worsening of the lesion during the perioperative period of the scheduled cystoprostatectomy. None of the patients experienced worsening or recurrence of granulomatous lesions. Patients who developed asymptomatic masses (n = 14) were significantly younger than those who did not (p = 0.0076) and multivariate analysis also showed that younger age was independently associated with the development of clinically suspicious lesions (p = 0.032); however, none of the parameters were associated with histologically confirmed granuloma formation.
Genitourinary granulomas mimicking recurrence of carcinoma may develop in nearly 10% of patients after intravesical BCG therapy. Most patients can be managed without potentially toxic antituberculosis therapy.
Aunque las complicaciones de la terapia intravesical con BCG están bien descritas, pocas veces se ha comunicado la formación posterior de granulomas genitourinarios asintomáticos, y su estrategia de tratamiento sigue siendo controvertida. El objetivo de este estudio es evaluar la tasa de incidencia de la formación de granulomas genitourinarios asintomáticos que imitan la recurrencia del cáncer de vejiga tras el tratamiento intravesical con el bacilo de Calmette-Guérin (BCG), así como identificar las estrategias de diagnóstico y tratamiento según las características de los pacientes.
Se realizó una revisión retrospectiva de 162 pacientes sometidos a terapia intravesical con BCG. En los pacientes que desarrollaron granulomas, se evaluó el intervalo de tiempo entre la instilación de BCG y el desarrollo del granuloma, la presencia de bacterias acidorresistentes en las muestras de patología, los resultados del cultivo/reacción en cadena de la polimerasa, las estrategias de tratamiento de las lesiones y los resultados clínicos.
Se desarrollaron masas genitourinarias asintomáticas en 14 pacientes, de los cuales 5 se sometieron a evaluaciones histológicas confirmando en todos los casos una inflamación granulomatosa. Los órganos afectados fueron el riñón, la vejiga, la próstata y el pene. Aunque cuatro de los cinco pacientes no recibieron tratamiento para los granulomas, a uno de ellos se le administró medicación antituberculosa para evitar el empeoramiento de la lesión durante el periodo perioperatorio de la cistoprostatectomía programada. Ninguno de los pacientes experimentó empeoramiento o recurrencia de las lesiones granulomatosas. Los pacientes que desarrollaron masas asintomáticas (n = 14) eran significativamente más jóvenes que aquellos en los que no se produjeron (p = 0,0076), y el análisis multivariante también mostró que la edad más joven se asociaba de forma independiente con el desarrollo de lesiones clínicamente sospechosas (p = 0,032); sin embargo, ninguno de los parámetros se asoció con la formación de granulomas confirmados histológicamente.
Los granulomas genitourinarios que imitan la recurrencia del carcinoma pueden desarrollarse en cerca de un 10% de los pacientes sometidos a terapia intravesical con BCG. En la mayoría de los casos, el manejo de los pacientes puede realizarse sin una terapia antituberculosa potencialmente tóxica.

The influence of synthesis conditions on the growth of ZnO nanorods was meticulously studied by field-emission scanning electron microscope, X-ray diffractometer, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and high-resolution TEM. It is demonstrated that the KMnO
4
concentration has great influence on the morphology and on the alignment of ZnO nanorods. Further the optical properties of nanostructures were investigated by photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy and ultraviolet–visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. The PL spectrum divulged a continuous suppression of defect-related broadband emission by increasing the concentration of the KMnO
4
, which produced the quenching of surface defects present in the nanorods. The intensity ratio of the peaks corresponding to near-band emission (NBE) to that of deep-level emission of the KMnO
4
-modified ZnO nanorods was found to increase by eightfold of magnitude. Further it must be noted that nearly 17-fold enhancement in the PL emission of the peak corresponding to NBE was observed in KMnO
4
-modified ZnO compared to the ZnO grown without any additive. The I–V plot showed dependence of current values under dark and illumination over the amount of KMnO
4
added during the growth stage.

We describe the synthesis of nano-structured materials of ZnO and Pd by laser ablation and their applications to sensors. The synthesis of ZnO nano-wires was performed by nano-particle assisted ...deposition (NPAD) where nano-crystals were grown with nano-particles generated by laser-ablating a ZnO sintered target in an Ar background gas. The synthesized ZnO nano-wires were characterized with a scanning electron microscopy and the photoluminescent characteristics were examined under an excitation with the third harmonics of a Nd:YAG laser. The nano-wires with a diameter in the range from 50 to 150
nm and a length of up to 5
μm were taken out of the substrate by laser blow-off technique and/or sonication. It was confirmed that the nano-wires showed the stimulated emission under optical pumping, indicating a high quality of the crystalinity. Pd nano-particles were generated by laser-ablating a Pd plate in pure water. The transmission electron microscope observation revealed that Pd nano-particles with a diameter in the range from 3
nm to several tens of nanometers were produced. Using these nano-structured materials, we successfully fabricated sensors by the dielectrophoresis techniques. In the case of the ultraviolet photosensor, a detection sensitivity of 10
nW/cm
2 was achieved and in the case of hydrogen sensing, the response time of less than 10
s has been demonstrated with Pd nano-particles.
Abstract Viral vector-mediated gene transfer has become increasingly valuable for primate brain research, in particular for application of genetic methods (e.g. optogenetics) to study neuronal ...circuit functions. Neuronal cell tropisms and infection patterns are viable options for obtaining viral vector-mediated transgene delivery that is selective for particular neuronal pathways. For example, several types of viral vectors can infect axon terminals (retrograde infections), which enables targeted transgene delivery to neurons that directly project to a particular viral injection region. Although recent studies in rodents have demonstrated that adeno-associated virus serotype 8 (AAV8) and 9 (AAV9) efficiently transduce neurons, the tropisms and infection patterns remain poorly understood in primate brains. Here, we constructed recombinant AAV8 or AAV9, which expressed an enhanced green fluorescent protein (EGFP) gene driven by a ubiquitous promoter (AAV8-EGFP and AAV9-EGFP, respectively), and stereotaxically injected it into several brain regions in marmosets and macaque monkeys. Immunohistochemical analyses revealed almost exclusive colocalization of EGFP fluorescence via AAV9-mediated gene transfer with a neuron-specific marker, indicating endogenous neuronal tropism of AAV9, which was consistent with our previous results utilizing AAV8. Injections of either AAV8-EGFP or AAV9-EGFP into the marmoset striatum resulted in EGFP expression in local striatal neurons as a result of local infection, as well as expression in dopaminergic neurons of the substantia nigra via retrograde transport along nigrostriatal axonal projections. Retrograde infections were also observed in the frontal cortex and thalamus, which are known to have direct projections to the striatum. These local and retrograde gene transfers were further demonstrated in the geniculocortical pathway of the marmoset visual system. These findings indicate promising capabilities of AAV8 and AAV9 to deliver molecular tools into a range of primate neural systems in pathway-specific manners through their neuronal tropisms and infection patterns.
Under cyclic loading, we recorded the fatigue strength of a six-strand tendon repair with different symmetry in the lengths of suture purchase in two stumps of 120 dental rolls and in 30 porcine ...tendons. First, the strengths of the repairs with 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 mm asymmetry were screened using the dental rolls. The asymmetric core suture repairs were then made with a Kessler repair of equal suture purchase (10 mm) in two tendon stumps, and shifting two other Kessler repairs by 1, 3 or 5 mm, respectively, along the longitudinal axis of the tendon in relation to the first (symmetric) Kessler repair. The core repairs with 3 mm or more asymmetry in suture purchases in two tendon ends showed significantly greater fatigue strength and significantly smaller gaps compared with 1 mm asymmetry in core suture repair. Our results support that asymmetric placement of core sutures in two tendon ends favour resisting gapping at the repair site and 3 mm or more asymmetry is needed to produce such beneficial effects.
Dysregulated production of adipocytokines may be involved in the development of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease in metabolic syndrome and chronic kidney disease (CKD) associated with metabolic ...syndrome. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of treatment with angiotensin II (Ang II) type-1 receptor blocker (ARB) on the regulation of adipocytokines. Olmesartan, an ARB, significantly blunted the age- and body weight-associated falls in plasma adiponectin both in genetically and diet-induced obese mice, without affecting body weight, but had no effect on plasma adiponectin levels in lean mice. Olmesartan also ameliorated dysregulation of adipocytokines in obesity, such as tumor necrosis factor-α, plasminogen activator inhibitor-1, monocyte chemotactic protein-1, and serum amyloid A3. Olmesartan significantly reduced reactive oxygen species originating from accumulated fat and attenuated the expression of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phospho hydrogenase oxidase subunits in adipose tissue. In cultured adipocytes, olmesartan acted as an antioxidant and improved adipocytokine dysregulation. Our results indicate that blockade of Ang II receptor ameliorates adipocytokine dysregulation and that such action is mediated, at least in part, by targeting oxidative stress in obese adipose tissue. Ang II signaling and subsequent oxidative stress in adipose tissue may be potential targets for the prevention of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease in metabolic syndrome and also in metabolic syndrome-based CKD.
