Oreochromis niloticus (Nile tilapia) skin is a by‐product of Brazilian fish farming, rich in collagen. The present study aims to evaluate the wound healing, antioxidant, and antimicrobial potential ...of the raw hydrolyzed extract of Nile tilapia skin, as well as the identification of the main compounds. The in vitro activity was performed using antioxidant, antimicrobial and scratch wound healing assays. An in vivo experiment was performed to evaluate the wound healing potential. On days 1, 7, 14 and 21, the lesions were photographed to assess wound retraction and on the 7th, 14th and 21st days the skins were removed for histological evaluation and the blood of the animals was collected for glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase and glutamic pyruvic transaminase determination. The chemical study was carried out through liquid chromatography‐tandem mass spectrometry and de novo sequencing of peptides. The in vitro assays showed a reduction of the gap area in 24 h, dose‐dependent antimicrobial activity for both bacteria, and antioxidant activity. The chemical analysis highlighted the presence of active biopeptides. The histological evaluation showed that the raw hydrolyzed extract of Nile tilapia skin has a healing potential, and does not present toxicological effects; therefore, is promising for the treatment of wounds.
Asparagus production generates significant amounts of by-products during the summer and post-harvest growth period. By-products can be good sources of nutrients and phytochemicals. The interest in ...increasing the availability of proteins for human consumption has led to the use of new plant sources rich in proteins. The objective of this study was to use response surface methodology (RSM) to optimize the aqueous extraction process of proteins from asparagus leafy by-products, for the production of new protein ingredients. The optimum extraction condition was at pH 9, with 40 min of extraction at 50 °C, and the concentration was fixed at 5 g·L
. The isolate obtained presented 90.48% protein with 43.47% protein yield. Amino acids such as alanine, proline, valine, leucine/isoleucine, asparagine, and phenylalanine were identified, and the antioxidant activity for 2,2 AZINO BIS (3-ethylbenzo thiazoline 6 sulfonic acid diammonium salt) was 145.76 equivalent to Trolox μmol.100g
and for DPPH 65.21 equivalent to Trolox μmol.100g
. The product presented favorable technological properties (water absorption capacity 4.49 g·g
and oil absorption capacity 3.47 g·g
) and the color tended towards dark green (L* 31.91, a* -1.01, b* -2.11). The protein isolate obtained through the extraction optimization process showed high potential to be used as a protein ingredient.
Mucoadhesive nanostructured systems comprising poloxamer 407 and Carbopol 974P
have already demonstrated good mucoadhesion, as well as improved mechanical and rheological properties. Curcumin ...displays excellent biological activity, mainly in oral squamous cancer; however, its physicochemical characteristics hinder its application. Therefore, the aim of this study was to develop nanostructured formulations containing curcumin for oral cancer therapy. The photophysical interactions between curcumin and the formulations were elucidated by incorporation kinetics and location studies. They revealed that the drug was quickly incorporated and located in the hydrophobic portion of nanometer-sized polymeric micelles. Moreover, the systems displayed plastic behavior with rheopexy characteristics at 37 °C, viscoelastic properties and a gelation temperature of 36 °C, which ensures increased retention after application in the oral cavity. The mucoadhesion results confirmed the previous findings with the nanostructured systems showing a residence time of 20 min in porcine oral mucosa under flow system conditions. Curcumin was released after 8 h and could permeate through the porcine oral mucosa. Cytotoxicity testing revealed that the formulations were selective to cancer cells over healthy cells. Therefore, these systems could improve the physicochemical characteristics of curcumin by providing improved release and permeation, while selectivity targeting cancer cells.
Studies were performed to investigate the physicochemical properties of polymeric systems containing poloxamer 407 and acrylic acid derivatives (Carbopol 974P® or polycarbophil) for delivery of ...curcuminoids. To optimise the preparation method, the active and passive incorporation methodologies were investigated and the storage temperatures (5 and 25 °C) were evaluated by spectroscopic analysis. Colloidal systems containing Carbopol 974P® promoted stronger interactions and better structuring between curcumin and the polymeric micelles and higher temperatures showed higher anisotropy values. Kinetic studies showed that curcumin was quickly incorporated in the polymeric micelles. Location and storage studies showed that curcumin was in a more internalised portion of hydrophobic core of poloxamer 407 micelles and could be stable even after three months of preparation, when the formulations were composed of Carbopol 974P® and stored at 25 °C. In this sense, the active incorporation was chosen as the optimised method for preparation of curcuminoids-formulations for future pharmaceutical applications.

In this work, graphene quantum dots (GQDs) were synthesized from Moringa oleifera seed biomass doped with phosphorus, using a low-cost, renewable hydrothermal method. The biomass was ground and ...sieved (30 mesh), and the classified powder was transferred to a Teflon capsule, placed in a stainless-steel reactor (210 ºC, 24 h). Afterwards, 20 mL of distilled water were added to the synthesized GQDs, stirred for 30 min, and filtered through Whatman filter paper. Then they were centrifuged (12000 rpm, 10 min) and filtered through a 0.22 μm membrane. The filtrate was dialyzed in a cellulose dialysis bag, with a cut-off size of 3.5 kDa, for 7 days in absolute ethanol (99.5%), with gentle stirring, and the dialysate was exchanged every 24 h. The dialysate was dried at 105 ºC for 24 h. The GQDs were characterized by X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDX), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), UV-vis electronic absorption, fluorescence emission, X-ray Diffraction and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). The results show the GQDs with an average size of 18.63 ± 4.24 nm and high fluorescence (bright blue) under ultraviolet light (365 nm). Our GQDs are promising for application in bioimaging and bioanalysis.

In this work, carbon quantum dots (CQDs) were synthesized using a hydrothermal reactor. The precursor for the CQDs was Moringa oleifera seed oil, extracted using a 1:8 ethanol-to-mass ratio through ...ultrasound-assisted extraction (50 ºC, 30 min). The extract was then purified using a rotary evaporator (50 ºC, 50 rpm) to remove the solvent, followed by centrifugation (12,000 rpm, 10 min). Subsequently, the oil was transferred to a Teflon-lined capsule within a stainless-steel reactor and heated in a muffle furnace (210 ºC, 24 h). The synthesized CQDs were then centrifuged (12,000 rpm, 10 min) and filtered through a 0.22 μm membrane. These CQDs exhibited high fluorescence and, when activated photodynamically with white visible light, showed the ability to inhibit the growth of the Gram-positive bacterium Staphylococcus aureus, a common cause of skin infections. In recent decades, the inappropriate use of antibiotics has led to increased bacterial resistance, resulting in higher mortality rates in humans and animals. Therefore, the development of nanomaterials with antimicrobial properties, through a simple, cost-effective, and sustainable route, is essential for public health and safety.
