Conflict Resolution Actors, Dynamics and Cases deals with multiple concepts and themes of the broad subject area of conflict resolution, seeking to highlight empirical studies that examine several ...topics from conflict prevention to peacebuilding, including conflict management, institution building, the role of formal and informal actors, the features of conflicts in different political contexts and the methods and strategies used for resolution or transformation (mediation, non-violence, reconciliation, transitional justice, second track diplomacy, peace education, post-conflict reconstruction, among others) in intra- and inter-state conflicts. The book is open to several methodological approaches, focusing on empirical studies that address several cases, including studies on Cyprus, the South Caucasus region, DR Congo, the Middle East region, Tunisia and Iraq, as well as on the role of regional organizations such as the European Union in peace-making and peacebuilding. Conceived this way, this edited volume on conflict resolution complements existing books on the theme, seeking not only to apply conflict resolutions theoretical frameworks and concepts to contemporary case studies but also to contribute, based on these empirical studies, to advance the academic debate towards critical perspectives that guide the conflict resolution field to more pluralist, emancipatory and transformative approaches.

Este artigo examina a noção de estabilização dentro das doutrinas das potências ocidentais, particularmente dos EUA, e suas implicações no campo das operações de paz contemporâneas. Adotando as ...lentes analíticas dos Estudos para a Paz, o artigo procura mostrar que a elucidação do significado do rótulo estabilização não é mera questão de semântica, mas importa precisamente porque tem implicações explanatórias, normativas e conceituais importantes para a compreensão das mudanças em curso no modelo de intervenções internacionais justificadas em nome da paz. De uma perspectiva explanatória, o artigo sugere a hipótese deque as transformações mais recentes nas missões de paz da ONU, sobretudo o seu perfil cada vez mais intrusivo e ofensivo, refletem influências recebidas das experiências e doutrinas de estabilização desenvolvidas nas últimas duas décadas pelas potências ocidentais sob o guarda-chuva da OTAN. Indo além dessa preocupação explanatória, o artigo contribui para a compreensão das implicações normativas e conceituais que o foco na estabilização e suas fortes conotações estratégico-militares trazem para o tradicional papel de árbitro imparcial da ONU no campo da Resolução de Conflitos e para a agenda crítica dos Estudos para a Paz.
Abstract Drawing on the work of the latest generation of social philosophers institutionally or intellectually linked to the Frankfurt School, this article examines the ...critical-reconstructive-explanatory methodology that became a distinguishing feature of contemporary critical theory after its ‘reconstructive turn’. The article aims to show how these recent developments can contribute to overcoming the various criticisms that continue to challenge Critical International Relations Theory (CIRT) from a methodological viewpoint, such as its normative and interpretative emphasis at the expense of the empirical dimension of analysis, its inability to provide a substantive explanation of the social pathologies and mechanisms of domination it criticises, its insulation from issues of pluralism and multiculturalism, the absence of debate with outside approaches, and the lack of clarity on how theory connects to practice. After discussing the main aspects of the contemporary critical theory methodology, the article ends with a brief illustration of this methodology using as a basis the critique of the liberal peacebuilding.
Resumo Inspirando-se no trabalho da mais recente geração de filósofos sociais institucional ou intelectualmente ligados à Escola de Frankfurt, este artigo examina a metodologia crítica-reconstrutiva-explicativa que se tornou uma característica distintiva da teoria crítica contemporânea após sua ‘virada reconstrutiva’. O artigo pretende mostrar como estes desenvolvimentos recentes podem contribuir para superar várias críticas que continuam desafiando a Teoria Crítica das Relações Internacionais (TCRI) do ponto de vista metodológico, como sua ênfase normativa e interpretativa às custas da dimensão empírica da análise, sua incapacidade de fornecer uma explicação substantiva das patologias sociais e dos mecanismos de dominação que critica, seu isolamento com relação as questões do pluralismo e multiculturalismo, a ausência de debate com abordagens externas e a falta de clareza sobre como a teoria se conecta à prática. Depois de discutir os principais aspectos da metodologia da teoria crítica, o artigo termina com uma breve ilustração dessa metodologia usando como base a crítica da construção da paz liberal.
Embora os estudos da paz coloquem no núcleo da sua agenda de pesquisa alguns dos desafios mais graves e urgentes do nosso tempo ─ incluindo todas as formas de violência, as causas dos conflitos e as ...condições para a paz ─, é curioso notar a marginalidade, ou quase invisibilidade, dessa disciplina no meio acadêmico brasileiro, bem como a escassez de bibliografia produzida no Brasil dedicada às bases conceituais e metodológicas próprias dessa área de estudos. A fim de contribuir para uma maior visibilidade dos estudos da paz, este artigo tem por objetivo traçar um panorama geral do percurso de consolidação dos estudos da paz como disciplina acadêmica, desde o seu nascimento na década de 1950 até a atualidade. Dentro desse propósito, o artigo procura destacar as origens e os elementos definidores centrais dos estudos da paz, os desenvolvimentos conceituais sobre a violência e a paz ocorridos na obra de Johan Galtung, considerado uma das referências centrais dessa área de estudos, e os principais desdobramentos e desafios dos estudos da paz na atualidade.
In line with the critical movement that in the last two decades has led to an ‘aesthetic turn’ in the International Relations (IR) field, this article introduces the notion of geopoetics as a useful ...conceptual category for the analysis of peace, security, and politics. Conceiving geopoetics as an operative concept that helps to understand the political and social experience of geographical space through the most varied forms of artistic expression, this article investigates the work of the German filmmaker Wim Wenders, seeking to show how his filmography, when examined as a whole, constitutes a kind of geopoetic discourse of peace that offers an aesthetic critique, immanent to the very formal possibilities of cinematic technique that challenges dominant geopolitical and geostrategic approaches that continue to naturalise war and violence as necessary instruments of international politics. Relying on the concept of geopoetics and on the political relevance of cinema within the aesthetic turn observed in the IR field, the article argues that geopoetics contributes to expand the epistemological and methodological boundaries of the IR field and to developing a broader conception of peace in the discipline.
Relying on the literature on the political economy of new wars, this article aims to challenge the policy articulation of Somali piracy through the security–development nexus in recent resolutions of ...the UN Security Council. The article's central argument is that the UN Security Council's assumption that the political economy of piracy can be transformed by external top-down intervention based on a formulaic security–development nexus seems to be bound to fail for two main reasons: First, the 'nexus' is based on a virtual liberal state-building project in Somalia that is disconnected from the local context involving piracy; second, the 'nexus' works as a securitized dispositif, hence prioritizing security goals over social changes. Therefore, instead of the liberal peace recipe proposed by the Security Council as remedy for everything, including piracy, the article suggests a critical transformative approach, centred in actually existing forms of local politics and governance in areas affected by piracy, where the articulation between security and development can be made in a more balanced and nuanced way, taking into account the concrete needs of protection and development of people dependent on piracy.
Com base no caso da pirataria nas costas da Somália e de algumas mobilizações não-oficiais de comunidades costeiras contra o problema, o artigo pretende mostrar como uma combinação de iniciativas ...informais da esfera local com os mecanismos formais de intervenção internacional podem levar a uma abordagem diplomática alternativa – designada pela expressão “abordagem híbrida à pirataria” – capaz de produzir iniciativas que não se limitem à diplomacia coerciva que até o momento prevalece na resposta dominante dada ao problema.
This article joins the nascent debate on the causal status of securitisation theory. Relying on critical realist’s efforts to deepen and broaden the concept of cause – defined as ‘causal complex’ – ...and its insights to integrate discourse and constitutive relations into a non-positivist framework for causal explanation, the article aims to explore the explanatory status of securitisation theory, without downgrading its discursive core. To illustrate this argument, the article uses the securitisation of Somali piracy as an example of how the causal analysis of securitisation can contribute to explain some of the dynamics involved in security governance. From this perspective, securitisation works within a broader empirical framework of security, significantly implicated in causal relations, going beyond the Copenhagen School’s conception of securitisation as a non-causal constitutive theory merely defined as a formal framework for analysis. The article discusses, finally, the relevance and implications of introducing causal analysis in the study of securitisation.
Although chemical additives are able to improve the efficiency of ruminal fermentation, they can leave residues in the meat. However, a blend of secondary metabolites can improve ruminal fermentation ...without harming the population welfare. Five levels (0.0, 1.5, 3.0, 4.5, and 6.0 g/day) of a blend of secondary metabolites from mesquite extract in sheep feed to promote increases in the nutritional value, ruminal parameters, nitrogen (N) use efficiency, microbial protein (MP) synthesis, and blood metabolites. Ten intact male Santa Inês sheep with average body weight of 55 ± 9.81 kg were used in a 5 × 5 Latin square design, replicated twice. There was a quadratic response of the digestibility of dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM), crude protein (CP), and total digestible nutrients (TDN). Microbial protein concentrations, MP synthesis efficiency, propionic acid levels, and acetic/propionic acid ratio also showed a quadratic response. The blend promoted a quadratic effect on plasma glucose and lactate levels. On the other hand, it decreased the concentrations of ammoniacal nitrogen, plasma urea, and plasma cholesterol. It is recommended to supply a blend of secondary metabolites at 3.43 g/day.
Com base numa perspetiva crítica dos estudos de segurança e no que tem sido chamado de “viragem estética na teoria política internacional”, este artigo recorre a Um filme falado do realizador ...português Manoel de Oliveira, a fim de mostrar como a estética do sublime é calculadamente articulada no filme para produzir o ‘efeito‑choque’ e transmitir uma ideologia − a do choque das civilizações – contribuindo, assim, para reforçar o discurso securitizador que está na base da “Guerra contra o Terrorismo”. Com base nessa análise, o artigo conclui que uma abordagem estética da securitização não só oferece um modelo alternativo apropriado ao estudo do impacto da cultura visual na construção social da segurança, mas também contribui para o desenvolvimento da capacidade crítica do público a quem cabe, em última instância, a decisão de aceitar ou contestar um movimento de securitização.
