However, ...the effects of oral sub-chronic exposure to broccoli by-product flour (BF) have not yet been evaluated. The objective of this pilot study was to analyse the effects of BF intake in the physiological parameters of FVB/N mice fed a 6.7% BF-supplemented diet for 21 days. Glucosinolates and their derivatives were also quantified in plasma and urine. BF supplementation significantly decreased (
< 0.05) the accumulation of perirenal adipose tissue. Furthermore, mice supplemented with BF showed significantly lower (
< 0.01) microhematocrit values than control animals, but no impact on the general genotoxicological status nor relevant toxic effects on the liver and kidney were observed. Concerning hepatic and renal antioxidant response, BF supplementation induced a significant increase (
< 0.05) in the liver glutathione S-transferase (GST) levels. In BF-supplemented mice, plasma analysis revealed the presence of the glucosinolates glucobrassicin and glucoerucin, and the isothiocyanates sulforaphane and indole-3-carbinol. Overall, these results show that daily intake of a high dose of BF during three weeks is safe, and enables the bioavailability of beneficial glucosinolates and isothiocyanates. These results allow further testing of the benefits of this BF in animal models of disease, knowing that exposure of up to 6.7% BF does not present relevant toxicity.
A Middle–Upper Jurassic sedimentary succession has been cut by the Ramalhal-1 borehole in the Bombarral sub-basin (Lusitanian Basin, Portugal). The succession comprises the Brenha, Montejunto, Abadia ...and Lourinhã Formations, which are composed of limestones, marls, sandstones and clays. The main objective of this study was to characterize the organic matter using palynofacies and geochemical analyses to determine the depositional paleoenvironments and the hydrocarbon generation potential.
The Total Organic Carbon content is generally less than 1wt.% but reaches 4.1wt.% in one sample, due to the presence of perhydrous coal. The Rock-Eval pyrolysis results reveal lower values HI, usually nether to 100mgHC/gTOC, showing that the studied samples have type III kerogen and a low potential for oil generation. The Tmax values (varies between 319 and 443°C) and biomarker data obtained for these samples indicate a maturation ranging between immature and, eventually, mature. The palynofacies data indicate predominance of the Phytoclast group (>80%), with different degradation degrees and a modest contribution of Palynomorph group, especially sporomorphs, and the Amorphous Organic Matter (AOM) group. Solid bitumen was observed in some samples from the Montejunto and Brenha Formations. Determining the relative percentages of the kerogen groups allowed for the identification of seven intervals that established variations in the depositional environment.

Studies of the Mesozoic and Cenozoic sequence crossed by the Barreiro-4 borehole provide an improved understanding of the organic matter deposited in the Lower Tagus sub-basin (Lusitanian Basin, ...Portugal) and the implications for the potential source rock and depositional environment. This study focused on 43 samples (Middle Jurassic to Neogene) that were subjected to palynofacies and organic geochemistry analyses (Total Organic Carbon, Rock-Eval pyrolysis and molecular biomarker analysis). The palynofacies data indicate that the sequence contains mainly phytoclasts (non-opaque phytoclasts). However, the Middle Jurassic samples are dominated by Amorphous Organic Matter (AOM). Continental and/or marine palynomorphs are present in all the samples. The Cretaceous samples are characterized by small amounts of kerogen that have high contents of solid bitumen. The Total Organic Carbon (TOC) content is generally less than 1 wt.%. The Rock-Eval S1 and S2 parameters vary from 0.01 to 3.50 mgHC/g rock and 0.15 to 34.03 mgHC/g rock, respectively, with the highest values corresponding to the Cretaceous samples. The hydrogen index (HI) and oxygen index (OI) values range from 35 to 552 mgHC/g TOC and 4 to 180 mgHC/g TOC, respectively. The Tmax values range from 416 to 437 °C. The biomarker analysis showed that n-alkanes with 15–30 carbon atoms are present and usually have a unimodal distribution with a predominance of low to medium molecular weight compounds. The CPI values range between 0.63 and 3.65, and the pristane/phytane ratios vary between 0.48 and 1.64, indicating alternation of oxic–anoxic conditions along the sequence. The distribution of terpanes shows small amounts of tricyclic and tetracyclic terpanes in most of the samples (except for some Cretaceous samples) and a predominance of pentacyclic terpanes. The amount of 17α (H),22,29,30-trisnorhopane (Tm) usually exceeds the amount of 18α (H),22,29,30-trinorneohopane (Ts). The 20S/(20S + 20R) and αββ/(ααα + αββ) ratios of the C29 steranes generally have values below the range of equilibrium, indicating an immature stage of the OM.

A mouse model in which N-diethylnitrosamine (DEN) induces Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) has histological and genetic resemblance to human tumours.
Male ICR mice were divided into control (n=10) and ...DEN-treated (n=10) groups. DEN was administered via intraperitoneal injection, once a week, for eight consecutive weeks. Animals were euthanized seven weeks after the last administration of DEN and their livers were collected. Plasma albumin, total bilirubin, alanine transaminase and aspartate aminotransferase activity were all measured and liver mitochondrial bioenergetics and oxidative stress were also evaluated.
Histologically, pre-neoplastic lesions were identified in the livers of mice from the DEN group. Total plasma bilirubin increased significantly in the group exposed to DEN and mitochondrial complex I and IV were significantly inhibited (p=0.0403 and p=0.0053, respectively).
DEN induced changes in liver bioenergetics and antioxidant capacity towards reactive oxygen species, seven weeks after administration. At this stage, liver tissues in mice exposed to DEN still had the ability to counteract the oxidative effects of DEN by increasing the activity of antioxidant enzymes.

São vários os achados históricos que confirmam que o parto, na antiguidade, era realizado em posição vertical. Contudo, com o passar do tempo, aspetos sociais, científicos, culturais e religiosos ...foram modificando a forma vertical de parir. Aos poucos, as cadeiras de parto foram caindo em desuso, dando lugar ao parto na posição horizontal. No entanto, tem-se vindo a comprovar que a verticalização do parto, tem múltiplas vantagens que fragilizam a defesa de uma prática de parto na posição horizontal. Nesse sentido, pretendeu-se com este estudo, identificar os benefícios da posição vertical no trabalho de parto. A opção metodológica foi a revisão integrativa da literatura, de artigos publicados no friso temporal de 2017-2020, em Português e Inglês disponíveis nas bases de dados Medline (n= 236), CINAHL (n= 163) e B-On (n= 244), seguindo a estratégia PICOD. Em dezembro de 2020, fez-se a consulta às bases de dados, utilizando a expressão de pesquisa booleana “Delivery, Obstetric”Mesh) AND “Patient Positioning”Mesh OR (“Delivery, Obstetric” Mesh AND upright) OR (upright labor positioning) OR (VerticalTitle OR uprightTitle) AND (childbirthTitle OR laborTitle). Foram critérios de inclusão artigos em texto integral, de acesso livre, estudos qualitativos ou quantitativos, estudos randomizados controlados (RCT), revisões e ensaios clínicos. Não foram consideradas publicações de resumos simples, comunicações em conferências ou artigos de revista sem avaliação por pares. Com base no método de pesquisa foram selecionados 10 artigos, dos quais emergiram os seguintes resultados principais: a verticalização do parto tem benefícios provocados pela ação da gravidade, favorece o bem-estar fetal, melhora a dinâmica uterina e a estática fetal, diminui a duração do trabalho de parto, diminui a incidência de episiotomia, aumenta os diâmetros pélvicos e proporciona benefícios psicoafectivos à parturiente.Com base nos diferentes estudos, conclui-se assim que parir na posição vertical beneficia a parturiente e o feto devido a fatores fisiológicos e biomecânicos.
The aim of present mini-review was to highlight the effects of certain natural plant food compounds in animal models, analyzing their therapeutic effects and toxicological levels. Several natural ...compounds have been shown to promote health and to reduce the risk of disease due to their functional and nutraceutical properties. However, it has been observed that some diseases can still progress even in the presence of natural compounds. Thus, there is a need to conduct further research in order to elucidate the mechanisms underlying the functions and effects of natural compounds and to determine which products exert positive effects and which products have pharmacological potential to be applied in therapies. To evaluate the influence of a glutaraldehyde-based desensitizer (GL) on postoperative sensitivity (POS) in posterior bulk-fill resin composite restorations using an adhesive applied in the self-etch ...(SE) and etch-and-rinse (ER) strategies; and to assess the clinical performance of the restorations.
Posterior resin composite restorations (n = 228) at least 3 mm deep were inserted in 57 subjects using a split-mouth design. The adhesive was applied with/without prior application of a GL. A resin composite was used for all restorations. Spontaneous POS (risk and intensity), as well as POS caused by stimulation with an air blast and assess the response to horizontal and vertical percussion was assessed using two scales in the baseline and after 7, 14, and 30 days. In addition, some parameters were evaluated using FDI criteria up to 24 months of clinical service.
No significant POS was observed (p > 0.05). A higher absolute risk and intensity of spontaneous POS was observed within 7 days (35.1%), without statistically significant differences among groups. At 24 months 5 restorations were considered clinically unsatisfactory, and 73 restorations showed minor discrepancies in adaptation, with no significant differences between groups (p > 0.05).
A GL agent does not influence POS in posterior restorations with bulk-fill resin composite. It may be considered a dispensable clinical step in the restorative protocol.
To evaluate the effect of a glutaraldehyde-based desensitizer on the postoperative sensitivity (POS) in posterior resin composite restorations up to 12 months using a universal adhesive (Tetric ...N-Bond Universal) with selective enamel etching (SE) or an etch-and-rinse (ER) strategy.
Class I and class II resin composite restorations (n = 220) at least 3 mm deep were inserted in 55 subjects. The universal adhesive was applied using the SE (self-etch strategy on dentin with selective enamel etching) or the ER strategy, with or without prior application of a glutaraldehyde-based desensitizer (Gluma Desensitizer – GL) to form groups SEGL and ERGL. A bulk-fill resin composite (Tetric NCeram Bulk Fill) was used for all restorations. Spontaneous POS was assessed 7 days after the restorative procedure using the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) and the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS). After 7, 14, and 30 days of completing each restoration, the subjects were reassessed to evaluate POS caused by stimulation with an air blast, horizontal and vertical percussion. In addition, marginal discoloration, marginal adaptation, fracture, and recurrence of caries were evaluated using the FDI (World Dental Federation) criteria after 7 days and at 12 months.
No significant spontaneous or stimuli-induced POS was observed when restorations with or without GL were compared (p>0.05). A higher risk of spontaneous POS was observed within 7 days (40.0%; 95% CI 28.1 to 53.1), without statistically significant differences among groups. None of the participants reported POS at 12 months, however five restorations were considered clinically unsatisfactory (p > 0.05).
The previous application of GL did not significantly reduce spontaneous or stimuli-induced POS in posterior resin composite restorations at any time, regardless of the adhesive strategy used.
The use of a glutaraldehyde-based desensitizing agent did not generate lower incidence of postoperative sensitivity in resin composite posterior restorations.
The urinary tract infection (UTI) is a common disease in dogs and cats, and it can occur as isolated infections or recurrently. Recurrent cases are particularly common in cases with underlying health ...conditions. The diagnosis of UTIs in dogs and cats generally involves an integrated interpretation of clinical signs, urinalysis, and bacterial cultures. Diagnostic imaging can also help assessing or discarding anatomical lesions. One of the many microorganisms that can cause UTIs is Escherichia coli. Females, geriatric patients, and animals with comorbidities usually have an increased risk of UTI. Antimicrobial prescription is common for the treatment of UTIs in companion animals. However, nowadays, there is a growing concern about antimicrobial resistance due to over-prescription driving selection for resistance. Therefore, correct prescription and appropriate patient management are essential. This review aims to provide a summary of the clinical and epidemiological aspects of UTIs, contributing to improving veterinary practices and antibiotic prescription in the context of UTIs in companion animals.
Infekcija urinarnog trakta (UTI) uobičajena je bolest u pasa i mačaka i može se pojaviti kao izolirana ili ponavljana infekcija. Slučajevi ponavljane infekcije posebno su uobičajeni u slučajeva s pozadinskim zdravstvenim problemima. Dijagnoza UTI u pasa i mačaka općenito podrazumijeva integriranu interpretaciju kliničkih znakova, analizu mokraće i bakterijske kulture. Dijagnostičko oslikavanje može pomoći i procijeniti ili odbaciti anatomske lezije. Jedan od brojnih mikroorganizama koji mogu prouzročiti UTI jest Escherichia coli. Ženke, gerijatrijski pacijenti i životinje s komorbiditetima obično imaju povećani rizik od UTI. Antimikrobni lijekovi su uobičajeni za liječenje UTI u kućnih ljubimaca. Danas postoji sve veća zabrinutost zbog antimikrobne rezistencije zbog prekomjerne uporabe antibiotika koja dovodi do odabira za rezistenciju. Stoga su ispravni lijek i odgovarajuće vođenje pacijenta od osnovne važnosti. Ovaj pregled ima za cilj dati sažetak kliničkih i epidemioloških aspekata UTI, doprinoseći poboljšanju veterinarskih praksi i propisivanju antibiotika u kontekstu UTI u kućnih ljubimaca.
ResumoO rato está na base de importantes descobertas na área da medicina. Contudo, nem sempre foi bem visto pela sociedade. No século XIV abateu-se sobre a Europa uma pandemia, a Peste Negra, ...causada por uma bactéria (Yersinia pestis) transmitida ao Homem por uma pulga (Xenopsylla cheopis), cujo hospedeiro era o rato (Rattus rattus). Esta doença vitimou aproximadamente 150 milhões de pessoas. Estava-se longe de imaginar o contributo que o rato viria a ter na saúde humana.No século XVII o rato proliferou descontroladamente, surgindo uma nova profissão: os caçadores de ratos. Estes indivíduos ganhavam dinheiro com a captura e venda destes animais para alimentação. Nessa época apareceu um desporto novo e as apostas a ele associadas: as lutas de ratos. Como resultado desse desporto, aumentaram os acasalamentos consanguíneos e surgiram variações na pelagem do rato, aparecendo os primeiros ratos albinos. Em 1828 foram utilizados os primeiros ratos albinos num ensaio experimental sobre o estudo do efeito do jejum. Mais tarde, em 1906, no Instituto Wistar, Helen Dean King desenvolveu uma estirpe a partir dos ratos albinos, designada de Wistar, para uso na investigação biomédica.Ainda no século XX o uso do rato de laboratório alargou-se a estudos de aprendizagem em labirinto, nutrição, reprodução, genética e cancro, e consequentemente mais estirpes de animais foram desenvolvidas, passando a existir empresas com o propósito de os vender para investigação. A importância desta espécie pode comprovar-se pela análise do número de artigos publicados anualmente com recurso à sua utilização. Neste trabalho apresenta-se uma revisão histórica do uso do rato na investigação, evidenciando-se as caraterísticas que fizeram deste animal um modelo único na pesquisa biomédica. Palavras-chave: Investigação, Peste Negra, Rattus rattus, Wistar Abstract The rat is the basis of important findings in Medicine. However, it was not always well-seen by the society. In the 14th century, the Europe was affected by a pandemic disease, Black Pestis, caused by a bacterium (Yersinia pestis) transmitted to the Man by a flea (Xenopsylla cheopis), whose host was the rat (Rattus rattus). This disease victimized approximately 150 million people. It was far from imaging the contribution that the rat would have for human health. In the 17th century, the rat proliferated wildly, emerging a new job: the rat hunters. These people earnt money with the capture and selling of these animals for food. At that time appeared a new sport and the bets associated to it: the rat fights. Because of this new hobby, the consanguineous mating increased and appeared variations on rat coat, appearing the first albino rats. In 1828 the albino rats were used by the first time in an experimental assay about the fasting effects. Later, in 1906, in the Wistar Institute, Helen Dean King developed a strain from albino rats, called Wistar, for use in biomedical research. Still in the 20th century, the use of laboratory rats was expanded to studies of learning, nutrition, reproduction, genetics and cancer, and consequently more strains were developed by companies with the purpose to sell them for research. The importance of this specie may be evidenced by the analysis of the number of scientific works published annually using it. In this work, a historical review of the use of the rat in the investigation is provided, evidencing the characteristics that made it a unique model in biomedical research.
