The present study evaluated the role of heme oxygenase 1 (HO-1)/carbon monoxide (CO) pathway in the cholera toxin-induced diarrhea and its possible action mechanism. The ...pharmacological modulation with CORM-2 (a CO donor) or Hemin (a HO-1 inducer) decreased the intestinal fluid secretion and Cl− efflux, altered by cholera toxin. In contrast, ZnPP (a HO-1 inhibitor) reversed the antisecretory effect of Hemin and potentiated cholera toxin-induced intestinal secretion. Moreover, CORM-2 also prevented the alteration of intestinal epithelial architecture and local vascular permeability promoted by cholera toxin. The intestinal absorption was not altered by any of the pharmacological modulators. Cholera toxin inoculation also increased HO-1 immunoreactivity and bilirubin levels, a possible protective physiological response. Finally, using fluorometric technique, ELISA assay and molecular docking simulations, we show evidence that CO directly interacts with cholera toxin, forming a complex that affects its binding to GM1 receptor, which help explain the antisecretory effect. Thus, CO is an essential molecule for protection against choleric diarrhea and suggests its use as a possible therapeutic tool.
Following the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of infected Brazilian people has increased dramatically since February 2020, with Brazil being amongst the countries with the highest ...number of cases and deaths. Brazilian vaccination began in January 2021, aimed at priority groups. This study analysed the spatial and temporal evolution of vaccination in Brazil between the 3rd and 21st epidemiological weeks (EW) of 2021.
Spatial and temporal analyses were performed comprising 19 EW. Cases were structured into priority groups-elderly population (EP); healthcare workers (HW); indigenous and quilombola populations (I/Q), dose, vaccine (CoronaVac or AstraZeneca), and place of vaccination. A sweep test was performed to identify vaccination rate clusters. Vaccination rates (VR) were calculated according to a spatial window for each Health Region, indicating clusters above/below expected VR. Based on the discrete Poisson probability model, spatial analysis was performed to detect high/low VR clusters, which were converted into Kernel maps. Points were generated from SaTScan analyses associated with Health Region centroids. Temporal analysis of VR was carried out to identify significant trends, and results were converted into temporal cluster graphs. P-value ≤ 0.05 was adopted.
Southeast region concentrated most of the vaccines of EP and HW, followed by the Northeast. The latter region had the largest contingent of I/Q vaccinated. In all priority age groups and all regions, a higher percentage of complete CoronaVac vaccination schedules were observed compared with AstraZeneca. The temporal analysis identified high VR clusters of CoronaVac first and second dose in the early weeks, except for the EP; of AstraZeneca first dose, only for HW in the early weeks, and for EP and I/Q in the final weeks; of AstraZeneca second dose for all priority groups in the final weeks. I/Q populations had the lowest general VR. The spatial profile of VR indicated significant regional cluster differences between the priority groups.
This study highlights the importance of establishing vaccination priority groups, considering the asymmetries that a pandemic can trigger, notably in vast geographic areas, to contemplate the main objective of vaccination: to prevent casualties.

Abstract Objective: To describe and compare physical fitness variables according to compliance with the recommendations of physical activity, measured by accelerometry. Methods: The sample gathered ...120 students, 57 boys and 63 girls aged 9 to 11 years. The variables analyzed were: weight, stature, BMI, skinfolds, waist circumference, agility, flexibility, speed and strength of upper and lower limbs, and abdominal strength. Physical activity was measured objectively using an accelerometer. The students were divided into two groups: “complies with recommendations” (≥60min/day) and “does not comply with recommendations” (<60min/day). To verify the normality of the data, the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test was used. The mean values of students who do or do not comply with the physical activity recommendation were compared using Student's t and U-Mann Whitney tests. The level of significance was set at p<0.05. Results: The students who followed the recommendation showed significantly lower values compared to those who did not for adiposity (sum of 7 skinfolds); body weight; body mass index (BMI) and abdominal strength. No significant differences were found in the variables of speed and agility, and the upper limbs’ strength was greater in subjects who did not comply with recommendations. Conclusions: Students who complied with physical activity recommendations had better body composition and more abdominal strength than those who did not.
RESUMO Objetivo: Descrever e comparar as variáveis da aptidão física de acordo com o cumprimento da recomendação de atividade física, medida por acelerometria. Métodos: A amostra foi composta de 120 escolares, sendo 57 meninos e 63 meninas, de 9 a 11 anos de idade. As variáveis analisadas foram: peso, estatura, índice de massa corpórea (IMC), dobras cutâneas, circunferências, agilidade, flexibilidade, velocidade e força de membros superiores, inferiores e abdominal. A atividade física foi mensurada de forma objetiva por meio de acelerômetro. Os escolares foram divididos em dois grupos: “cumpre a recomendação” (≥60min/dia) e “não cumpre a recomendação” (<60min/dia). Para verificar a normalidade dos dados, foi utilizado o teste de Kolmogorov-Smirnov. A comparação dos valores médios dos escolares que cumprem ou não a recomendação de atividade física foi feita pelos testes t de Student e U de Mann-Whitney. O nível de significância adotado foi de p<0,05. Resultados: Os escolares que cumpriram a recomendação, comparados com os que não cumpriram, apresentaram valores significativamente menores para adiposidade (somatória das sete dobras cutâneas), peso corporal, IMC e força abdominal. Não foram encontradas diferenças significativas nas variáveis de velocidade e agilidade; quanto à força de membros superiores (MMSS), constatou-se que ela foi maior em quem não cumpriu a recomendação. Conclusões: Crianças que cumpriram a recomendação de atividade física apresentaram melhor composição corporal e força abdominal que as crianças que não cumpriram.
Evapotranspiration is an important process for nature and for human activities that involve the soil-plant-atmosphere complex, and knowledge about the topic of evapotranspiration is crucial. The ...MATOPIBA region occupies areas of the states of Maranhão, Tocantins, Piauí and Bahia and occupies a significant part of the Cerrado region. Currently, this region has been undergoing major changes in its vegetation cover caused by the opening of areas for the implementation of agricultural crops. In this sense, the objective of this review was to discuss the topic of evapotranspiration and native vegetation of the Cerrado, as well as to present the importance of remote sensing for estimating evapotranspiration and monitoring changes in land use and cover in the Cerrado. It can be seen how important the natural vegetation of a region is, showing its importance in the most different environmental spheres, being fundamental for the hydrological cycle and other environmental processes. In this sense, deforestation actions are too harmful to the natural environment, contributing to damages related to local and regional fauna, flora and hydrology. In this scenario, it is necessary and fundamental to carry out actions that aim to contain and reduce deforestation.Keywords: Cerrado, MapBiomas, Deforestation, Meteorological elements.Evapotranspiração no contexto das mudanças de uso e cobertura da terra no MATOPIBA, BrasilRESUMOA evapotranspiração é um importante processo para a natureza e para as atividades humanas que envolvem o complexo solo-planta-atmosfera, sendo crucial o conhecimento acerca do tema da evapotranspiração. A região do MATOPIBA ocupa áreas dos estados do Maranhão, Tocantins, Piauí e Bahia e ocupa parte significativa da região dos Cerrados. Atualmente, essa região vem passando por grandes mudanças em sua cobertura vegetal ocasionadas pela abertura de áreas para a implantação de culturas agrícolas. Nesse sentido, objetivou-se com a presente revisão discorrer sobre o tema evapotranspiração e vegetação nativa do Cerrado, bem como apresentar a importância do sensoriamento remoto para as estimativas de evapotranspiração e no acompanhamento das mudanças de uso e cobertura dos solos do Cerrado. Vê-se quão importante é a vegetação natural de uma região, evidenciando sua importância nas mais diferentes esferas ambientais, sendo fundamental para o ciclo hidrológico e demais processos ambientais. Nesse sentido, ações de desmatamento são demasiado prejudiciais ao ambiente natural contribuindo para prejuízos relativos à fauna, à flora e à hidrologia locais e regionais. Nesse cenário, faz-se necessária e fundamental a realização de ações que visem conter e reduzir o desmatamento.Palavras-chave: Cerrado, Mapbiomas, Desmatamento, Elementos meteorológicos.

The quality of meat is influenced by several aspects, among which post-vaccination abscesses and bruises stand out as primary factors for the condemnation of carcasses. However, economic losses ...resulting from improper handling practices can severely compromise the profitability of both the packing plant and the producer. The objective of this study was to estimate the frequency of occurrence of abscesses and bruises in carcasses of animals slaughtered in a packing plant and analyze the economic losses generated by them. The number of animals examined was determined according to the slaughter flow in the packing plant (10-20% of animals/day). Data pertaining to region and number of bruises, abscess location, weight of excised portions and distance from the municipalities of origin of the animals were collected and evaluated by descriptive statistical analysis. The occurrence of lesions was 78% trauma- and 45% abscess-derived. The presence of these lesions resulted in economic losses, representing a depreciation of BRL 2.99/animal in the profit obtained by the cattle farmer. A comparison between the “sex classes” and “bruising” factors revealed that the females had higher occurrence and distribution of bruises and abscesses than uncastrated and castrated males. Bruises were more frequent in the hindquarter region, regardless of the distance, while abscesses were restricted to the forequarter. The weight of discarded tissues was higher on farms less than 200 km away from the packing plant; however, these results were influenced by the number of animals evaluated in the group.
A qualidade da carne é influenciada por vários aspectos, dentre eles destacam-se abscessos vacinais e hematomas, pois são considerados fatores primordiais para a condenação de carcaças. Todavia, a ...perda econômica resultante de práticas errôneas de manejo poderá comprometer severamente a lucratividade tanto do frigorífico, como do produtor. Objetivou-se com o presente estudo estimar a frequência de ocorrência de abscessos e hematomas em carcaças de animais abatidos em um matadouro-frigorífico e analisar suas perdas econômicas. A quantidade de animais examinados foi determinada de acordo com o fluxo de abate do matadouro-frigorífico (10 - 20% de animais/dia). Foram coletados dados referentes à região e número de hematomas, localização do abscesso, peso das porções excisadas e a distância dos municípios de origem dos animais. Os dados foram analisados utilizando o método de estatística descritiva. Foi observado que a ocorrência das lesões foi 78% de natureza traumática e 45% de natureza abscedativa. A presença dessas lesões culminou em prejuízos econômicos, especialmente representando a depreciação no lucro do pecuarista de R$ 2,99 / animal. As análises de comparação entre as classes sexuais e as lesões, constataram que as fêmeas apresentaram maior ocorrência e distribuição de hematomas e abscessos em relação aos machos inteiros e castrados. Os hematomas foram mais frequentes na parte traseira dos animais, independente da distância, enquanto os abscessos restringiram-se ao quarto dianteiro. O peso dos tecidos descartados foi maior em fazendas com distâncias inferiores a 200 km do matadouro-frigorífico, contudo esses resultados foram influenciados pelo número de animais avaliados no grupo.
The state of Rio de Janeiro holds many coastal lagoons with an extensive biodiversity. The lagoons are considered productive, but also defenseless due anthropic use. They can be great economic ...sources, as well as an ideal place for leisure and recreation. In order to evaluate the water quality of the Iquipari Lagoon, located in the city of São João da Barra, RJ, this work aims to demonstrate the results of physicochemical and microbiological parameters, and to discuss the results of the analysis. It was possible to observe that the parameters such as thermotolerant coliforms, pH and Turbidity (UNT) showed high values established by CONAMA No. 357/05. However, it is necessary to give special attention to environmental education in the locality, as well as to encourage preservation of the natural environment in which the lagoon is located.
O Estado do Rio de Janeiro possui diversas lagoas costeiras que abrigam uma vasta biodiversidade. As lagunas são consideradas produtivas e ao mesmo tempo indefesas devido ao uso antrópico, podendo ...ser grandes fontes econômicas, assim como uma localidade ideal de lazer e recreação. Visando a avaliar a qualidade de água da laguna de Iquipari, localizada no município de São João da Barra/RJ, o presente trabalho tem como objetivo demonstrar os resultados dos parâmetros físico-químicos e microbiológicos, e discutir os resultados oriundos das análises. Foi possível observar que os parâmetros como coliformes termotolerantes, pH e Turbidez (UNT) apresentaram valores elevados estabelecidos pela CONAMA n. 357/05. Contudo é necessário ter uma atenção à educação ambiental na localidade, assim como incentivar a preservação do meio natural em que a laguna se encontra.
Introdução: O sono é uma necessidade vital e fisiológica que tem o poder de restauração do organismo e conservação da energia. Entre os adolescentes, notou-se que houve uma diminuição nas horas de ...sono tornando-os muito vulneráveis à apresentação do quadro de insônia. Objetivo: Verificar níveis de insônia entre adolescentes com excesso de peso antes e depois de um programa de exercício físico. Métodos: Trata-se de um estudo epidemiológico quase experimental e analítico. Na primeira fase do estudo, foram realizados exames laboratoriais, antropométricos, hemodinâmicos e análises nutricionais e psicológicas em 635 adolescentes com idade entre 10 a 16 anos. Destes, 63 adolescentes foram diagnosticados com exceso de peso sendo convidados a participarem de um programa de exercício fisico. Resultados: O grupo-controle evidenciou maior percentual (acima da média) de insônia, tanto no pré (72,7%), quanto no pós teste (90%), e na comparação das médias dos dois grupos, houve uma diferença significativa (p = 0,006). Conclusão: Ressalta-se a significativa diminuição nos níveis de insônia entre os adolescentes que participaram do programa de exercício, propiciando maior bem-estar e disposição para o dia a dia.
