The objective of this research was to study the effect of avocado pulp (A) and tomato paste (T) addition on the physicochemical, nutritional and sensory quality of pork frankfurters. Treatments were: ...1) Control; 2) A10 = 10% A; 3) A20 = 20% A; 4) T10 = 10% T; 5) T20 = 20% T; and 6) A10+T10 = 10% A+10% T. Colour (L*, a* and b*), fatty acid profile, contents of phenols and flavonoids, and antioxidant capacity were measured. In the same way, sensory analysis was evaluated. Tomato paste decreased L* but increased (P < 0.05) a* and b* values. On the other hand, A did not affect L*, decreased a* and increased b*. Avocado pulp increased (P < 0.05) the proportion of monounsaturated fatty acids in the finished product. Antioxidant activity increased (P < 0.05) with incorporation of T, much higher than that observed by adding A. Frankfurters with T and with a combination of T and A had the best acceptance by the sensory panel. The use of T and A can be a good strategy to improve nutritional quality and antioxidant properties of pork frankfurters.

The chemical diversity of sphingolipids in plants allows the assignment of specific roles to special molecular species. These roles include NaCl receptors for glycosylinositolphosphoceramides or ...second messengers for long-chain bases (LCBs), free or in their acylated forms. Such signaling function has been associated with plant immunity, with an apparent connection to mitogen-activated protein kinase 6 (MPK6) and reactive oxygen species (ROS). This work used in planta assays with mutants and fumonisin B1 (FB1) to generate varying levels of endogenous sphingolipids. This was complemented with in planta pathogenicity tests using virulent and avirulent
strains. Our results indicate that the surge of specific free LCBs and ceramides induced by FB1 or an avirulent strain trigger a biphasic ROS production. The first transient phase is partially produced by NADPH oxidase, and the second is sustained and is related to programmed cell death. MPK6 acts downstream of LCB buildup and upstream of late ROS and is required to selectively inhibit the growth of the avirulent but not the virulent strain. Altogether, these results provide evidence that a LCB- MPK6- ROS signaling pathway contributes differentially to the two forms of immunity described in plants, upregulating the defense scheme of a non-compatible interaction.
The transformation of biomasses from agro-industrial waste can significantly impact the production of green chemicals from sustainable resources. Pectin is a biopolymer present in lignocellulosic ...biomass as Orange Peel Waste (OPW) and has possibilities for making platform compounds such as furfural for sustainable chemistry. In this work, we studied the transformation to furfural of OPW, pectins, and
d
-galacturonic acid (D-GalA), which is the main component (65 wt%) of pectin. We analyzed pectins with different degrees of esterification (45, 60 and 95 DE) in a one-pot hydrolysis reaction system and studied the differences in depolymerization and dehydration of the carbohydrates. The results show that the production of furfural decreases as the DE value increases. Specifically, low DE values favor the formation of furfural since the decarboxylation reaction is favored over deesterification. Interestingly, the furfural concentration is dependent upon the polysaccharide composition of pentoses and uronic acid. The obtained concentrations of furfural (13 and 14 mmol/L),
d
-xylose (6.2 and 10 mmol/L), and L-arabinose (2.5 and 2.7 mmol/L) remained the same when the galacturonic acid was fed either as a polymer or a monomer under the same reaction conditions (0.01 M SA, 90 min and 433 K). OPW is proposed as a feedstock in a biorefinery, in which on a per kg OPW dry basis, 90 g of pectin and 15 g of furfural were produced in the most favorable case. We conclude that the co-production of pectin and furfural from OPW is economically feasible.
Graphical Abstract
The current study examined the relationships between the specific strategies that preschool children use to regulate their emotions and childhood weight status to see if emotion regulation strategies ...would predict childhood weight status over and above measures of eating self-regulation. 185 4- to 5-year-old Latino children were recruited through Head Start centers in a large city in the southeastern U.S. Children completed both a delay of gratification task (emotion regulation) and an eating in the absence of hunger task (eating regulation). Eating regulation also was assessed by maternal reports. Four emotion regulation strategies were examined in the delay of gratification task: shut out stimuli, prevent movement, distraction, and attention to reward. Hierarchical linear regressions predicting children's weight status showed that both measures of eating regulation negatively predicted child obesity, and the use of prevent movement negatively predicted child obesity. Total wait time during the delay of gratification tasks was not a significant predictor. The current findings are consistent with studies showing that for preschool children, summary measures of emotion regulation (e.g., wait time) are not concurrently associated with child obesity. In contrast, the use of emotion regulation strategies was a significant predictor of lower child weight status. These findings help identify emotion regulation strategies that prevention programs can target for helping children regulate their emotions and decrease their obesity risk.
In recent years, there has been great interest in developing molecular adjuvants based on antisense oligonucleotides (ASOs) targeting immunosuppressor pathways with inhibitory effects on regulatory T ...cells (Tregs) to improve immunogenicity and vaccine efficacy. We aim to evaluate the immunostimulating effect of 2'OMe phosphorothioated Foxp3-targeted ASO in an antifungal adjuvanted recombinant vaccine.
The uptake kinetics of Foxp3 ASO, its cytotoxicity and its ability to deplete Tregs were evaluated in murine splenocytes in vitro. Groups of mice were vaccinated with recombinant enolase (Eno) of
in Montanide Gel 01 adjuvant alone or in combination with either 1 µg or 8 µg of Foxp3 ASO. The titers of antigen-specific antibody in serum samples from vaccinated mice (male C57BL/6) were determined by ELISA (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay). Cultured splenocytes from each group were activated in vitro with Eno and the levels of IFN-γ and IL-12 were also measured by ELISA. The results showed that the anti-Eno antibody titer was significantly higher upon addition of 8 µM Foxp3 ASO in the vaccine formulation compared to the standard vaccine without ASO. In vitro and in vivo experiments suggest that Foxp3 ASO enhances specific immune responses by means of Treg depletion during vaccination.
Foxp3 ASO significantly enhances immune responses against co-delivered adjuvanted recombinant Eno vaccine and it has the potential to improve vaccine immunogenicity.
